Earth Friendly Restaurants in Astoria

Happy Earth day, Astoria!  To celebrate this important day, I've given thought to the eco-friendly restaurants in the neighborhood that do Mother Earth proud.  If you have a chance to visit these today, please do, and patronize their business.  What are some of your eco-friendly haunts?

Vesta & Pachanga Patterson - These guys aren't shy about their restaurant's mission, which is to provide their patrons an experience that's inspired by the local greenmarket, giving preference to everything that's fresh and in season.  I like that they often tell you where their ingredients come from, including the specific farms and their locales.  Vesta - 21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.545.5550.  Pachanga Patterson - 33-17 31st Avenue, Astoria. 718.554.0525

Image by The Brooklyn Grange Farm

Brooklyn Grange Farm - Despite its deceiving name, Brooklyn Grange Farm is located in LIC, boasting "the world's largest rooftop soil farms," growing over 50,000 pounds of organic produce.  A direct supporter of the farm itself, I've been up there on several occasions and have patronized them through their CSA program.  There's always an abundance of something delicious, and the folks who run it are open and welcoming to new volunteers.  That's right, you can even have a go at urban farming yourself!  37-18 Northern Blvd, LIC. 347.670.3660

BareBurger - Everyone who's been to BareBurger can vouch for their environmentally friendly approach, which not only extends to its locally sourced food, including organic meat, but also the eco-chic decor.  It's not uncommon to encounter whimsy embellishments such as light fixtures built out of reused knives, forks and spoons, reclaimed wood tabletops, and the quintessential recycled tin sliding door.  33-21 31st Avenue, Astoria. 718.777.7011, 23-01 31st Street, Astoria. 718.204.7167

Milkflower
- One of my recent restaurant faves, Milkflower also supports green business practices.  I love that their interior is adorned with refurbished accents such as reclaimed wood paneled walls, tables made of old police dividers, benches made of recycled burlap and more.  Their wood fired pizza doesn't suck either.  Mmmm... 34-12 31st Avenue, Astoria. 718.204.1300

Venturing out to Venturo

Ever since I've found out about Venturo, the newest outpost from the guys that run Vesta and Pachanga Patterson, I knew I wanted to check it out.  Promising a cozy, comfort food experience in an intimate setting in Sunnyside, I didn't need to hear more to know I wanted to experience it.  My brother Peter and I headed there on Saturday and totally dug it - from the friendly vibe to the down-home delectable food.

Atmosphere:
Located in a prime location on Queens Blvd, near 44th Street, Venturo is easy to find and it's also subway accessible. Surrounded by a few disparate establishments such as a pet store, an Irish pub, not far from the old Meat Boutique (now closed), Venturo really stands on its own, as it's the only one of its kind in the neighborhood.

Once you walk in, you feel not unlike you do at Vesta or Pachanga Patterson.  The space is small and intimate, but it has a certain buzz and charm.  On a Saturday evening, it was packed to the gills, and I was glad I had the foresight to make a reservation.  There's a small bar in the center of the dining room, which is similar to the setup at Vesta.  I appreciate the varied clientele, from young professionals, families, singles ready to mingle and the like.

Food
:
Given that the menu is quite simple and short, it's not difficult to make a decision.  Since I was limited by my gluten free diet this week, I couldn't try the pastas, but will definitely come back for them next time around.

Cauliflower and Raisins
- We ordered this dish as a starter, even though it's technically a side.  Loving the sweetness that came from the golden raisins, we devoured the cauliflower, which was beautifully separated into bite sized florets.  Enjoying the lovely texture, which was quite tender, it's certainly a unique take on a sometimes underrated vegetable.

Stuffed Trout - Since I was limited in my food options, I chose the stuffed trout, which sounded and looked delicious.  I'm not sure what I imagined when reading its description, but I was in awe at how gorgeous and rustic it looked.  The taste was excellent, as the fish was flaky and buttery, while the skin remained crispy and nicely seasoned with fresh herbs. My favorite aspect was the pesto, which the fish rested on, and I scooped it up with my fork and smeared it onto the already flavorful skin.  Adoring how garlicky it all was, it packed a lot of flavor and personality.

Eggplant Lasagna - Peter couldn't resist a pasta dish, but at the same time was curious to try something new, so he went with this "pasta free" concoction.  Made of layers of breaded eggplant, cheese, tomato sauce and a creamy bechamel sauce, it was the epitome of a fall comfort dish.  I had a little bite sans the breadcrumbs of course, and was totally obsessed.

Service and Cost:
Just like at Vesta or Pachanga Patterson, the service at Venturo was unassuming yet efficient and in general took care of business.  Even though the place was packed on a Saturday night and people were hustling, we always felt well taken care of.

Costs are moderate to inexpensive for the high quality of food and the nice atmosphere.  Like I said, the only one of its kind right now.

Appetizers - $8 - $18
Pizza & Pasta - $12 - $15
Entrees - $17 - $22

An Astorian Thanksgiving - It's Coming!

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so I thought I'd start to think about it early this year, seeing as I completely glossed over Halloween.  It's nice to see a lot of businesses in the nabe are planning early, and all the themed menus and fun offers are getting me excited.  Here's a few to get you started.

Koliba - Even though it's probably not the first place you think of for a Thanksgiving meal, I expect that it'd be delicious.  Their Thanksgiving menu includes traditional things such as turkey with all the fixins, but they also have Slovak/Czech style dishes on the menu.  You'll find this dinner to be a prix-fixe, ranging from $15.75 - $24.75.  31-11 23rd Avenue, Astoria.  718.626.0430

Cavo - I like visiting Cavo on special occasions, since it feels kind of celebratory and a little fancy, too.  Taking a peek at their Thanksgiving menu, I spied yummy things such as roasted butternut squash soup, oven roasted free range turkey, brussels sprouts, chestnut cranberry stuffing and more.  42-18 31st Avenue, Astoria.  718.721.1001

Astor Bake Shop - Everyone knows that ABS is totally worth its salt when it comes to dessert.  They've been baking up a storm with seasonal treats and are taking pre-orders for Thanksgiving seasonal pies.  This rustic apple beauty certainly caught my eye.  12-23 Astoria Blvd, Astoria.  718.606.8439

Vesta - These guys always do a great job of hooking you up for Thanksgiving, whether you choose to dine in or take out.  I found the take out option pretty cool, as they feature an entire Thanksgiving feast to-go (including their signature, Baby Jesus Cake) for 8-10 people.  Find out what Thanksgiving Foods are included here.  21-20 30th Avenue, Astoria.
 718.545.5550

John Brown Smokehouse - Further on the topic of a take-home Thanksgiving feast, how about something with a smoky, bbq twist? JBS has a few tasty options for you, including a whole pecan smoked turkey with sides and a special order of pecan or pumpkin pies.  Prices vary based on how many mouths you want to feed.  Email them directly to find out more and to place your order.  10-43 44th Drive, LIC.  347.617.1120

The 8th Annual Taste of LIC is Coming

One of my favorite, local summer tasting events is the upcoming Taste of LIC.  I look forward to this event each year, as I relish in getting a flavor (and sometimes a sneak peek) of a number of local culinary stand-outs from LIC, Astoria and the neighboring area.

It's a lot of fun to not only find your trusty staples here such as Tournesol, Manducatis Rustica, and Vesta, but also newcomers such as S. Prime Steakhouse, Casa Enrique, Van Alst Kitchen and others.

Aside from it being a good way to taste great local food, it's always fun to come out and mix and mingle with local business owners, as well as to meet old and new friends.  The whole thing is one big (well-organized) party.  Here are the details and how you can score your tickets.

8th Annual Taste of LIC
Tuesday, June 4th from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. - general admission
$50 per person - purchase your tickets

Please find a list of participating restaurants, food & beverage partners.
I can't wait to see you there!

Last Minute Astorian Mother's Day Round-Up

Time to celebrate Mama, which is an awesome time of year.  I always look forward to hanging out with my mom and honoring all that she's done for my brother and me.  This year, we're starting the celebration at my brother's and ending things off at City Field by watching Cirque du Soleil's Totem. What are your plans? In case you're looking for something lovely to do in the nabe, here are 5 suggestions.

MP Taverna - Newcomer MP is rolling out the big guns with their special Mother's Day brunch and dinner service for a $29.95/person prix-fixe.  Menu highlights include lobster risotto, Greek pork sausage, slow cooked lamb shank and a chocolate halva brownie.  31-29 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria.  718.777.2187

Queens Kickshaw - I love the affordable dinner option over at The Queens Kickshaw for just $25/person.  Expect yummy treats from their brand new dinner menu such as hard cider arancini, Kickshaw bibimbap, beet pasta alfredo, a deconstructed apple cobbler and more.  Check out our We Heart Astoria write-up of all of these menu items and more.  40-17 Broadway, Astoria.  718.777.0913

Vesta - If you'd like to take mom for a real down home comforting meal, I highly recommend Vesta. The trick is to make reservations or to get there early.  They'll be featuring some brunch favorites til 3 p.m. such as the warm bankie and their hangover pizza.  Dinner will be served too, with yummie faves such as homestyle lasagna, pork sausage spiedini, soft shell crab and more.  21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria.  718.545.5550

La Guli Pastry Shop - I adore all the special sweet goodies that La Guli is making just for mom.  These include chocolate Mother's Day lollipops, beautifully decorated sugar cookies and special Mother's Day Cakes.  29-15 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria.  718.728.5612

Teaspoon Bake Shop
- Even though it's not in Astoria, I wanted to pay special attention to this Bayside bakery that has tons of beautiful baked goods just for Mom. Think festive cake balls, intricately decorated MOM cookies, cupcakes, French macarons and a lot more.  36-41 Bell Blvd, Bayside.  718.224.4626

Astorian Thanksgiving Roundup

Thanksgiving is almost here and everyone seems to be excited - especially given the difficult period we've just endured with Sandy.  It's no wonder that this year, it's pretty clear what we're thankful for.  I'm thankful for my amazing family and friends and for having a safe, comfortable home to come back to each day.  What about you guys?  How do you plan to spend your Thanksgiving? In case you need some ideas, here's a short round-up of Astoria and LIC venues that are doing Thanksgiving their way.

Bear - Featuring a three-course menu with sides, and of course turkey with stuffing, you can come by at 4 p.m., 6 p.m. or then on the later side at 8 p.m. The dinner will only set you back $45/person, which is a great deal for a Thanksgiving feast.  12-14 31st Avenue, Astoria.  917.396.4939

Vesta - Always doing it up special for Thanksgiving, come by for their very Italian Thanksgiving with dishes such as tagliatelle with braised pork, a 32 oz bone-in NY strip steak, and of course the turkey with olive oil mashed potatoes, corn bread and a cranberry glaze.  21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria.  718.545.5550

Sage General Store - If you're having Thanksgiving at home and are looking for dessert ideas, consider a pie from Sage General Store including flavors such as pecan, pumpkin and or a classic lattice apple.  24-20 Jackson Blvd, LIC.  718.361.0707

Mojave - Their special Thanksgiving menu sounds really scrumptious with a marshmallow glazed turkey with butternut squash and sweet potato, the pork loin rollatini filled with chorizo and manchego cheese, and for dessert a cranberry glazed pumpkin pie and even a complimentary pumpkin martini or sangrita.  22-36 31st Street, Astoria.  718.545.4100

Mother's Day Round-Up

One of my favorite family holidays is here – Mother’s Day! I love spending the entire day with my mama and we typically do a fun activity either in the nabe or in the city, however not this year, as I’m heading overseas to Japan. But I’ll be thinking of her no doubt. For those of you lucky to spend the day with mom, here are a few fun things to do:

LIC Market
– Treat mom to brunch at this awesome, seasonal restaurant/general store. Mom will love the relaxed vibe, and you’ll be able to sample some of their new spring items, which feature local and seasonal fruits and veggies. Brunch goes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. LIC Market - 21-52 44th Drive, LIC. 718.361.0013

Vesta – Not only do they have their typical brunch favorites on the menu such as the warm bankie and hangover pizza, but you can also come by for dinner and treat mom to a nostalgic baked lasagna dish, oozing with cheese, homemade tomato sauce and fresh herbs. The wine here is thoughtfully chosen and provides a delicious pairing with all the dishes. Vesta – 21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.545.5550

Astor Bake Shop - If you'd like to keep things casual yet still very special, consider taking mom to this awesome sweet shop that will not only impress you with its pastries and decadent treats, but also a special Mother's Day prix-fixe brunch menu.  On it, you'll find nostalgic finds such as Eggs Benedict, Strawberry Stuffed French Toast, a Flank Steak and Egg sandwich and more.  The menu consists of 3 courses for just $22.95/person.  Astor Bake Shop - 12-23 Astoria Blvd, Astoria.  718.606.8439

Bear-Also featuring a special brunch for Mom, you won't be disappointed by their inventive options such as a gorgeous lox & croissant/cucumber sandwich, lobster omelette, strawberry fried cheesecake and more.  My personal fave is their scallops and eggs dish, with large, perfectly seared scallops embedded in fluffy eggs.  Bear - 12-14 31st Avenue, Astoria.  917.396.4939

Mojave - For some Southwestern flair, Mojave is a great choice.  Mom will get special treatment with a complimentary Viva La Mama cocktail with fresh strawberries.  She can also bite into unique dishes such as the signature Carne ala Tampiquena that actually originates from an old Mexican Mother's recipe.  Pretty neat!  Mojave - 22-36 31st Street, Astoria.  718.545.4100

10 New Year's Eve Options in Astoria and LIC

With Saturday's New Year's Eve plans soon approaching, you may still be figuring out just what to do. El Ay Si - Another great place to keep the celebration local is El Ay Si where you'll be able to enjoy their regular dinner service as well as other food and drinks specials.  A DJ will be spinning and the good news is that there is no minimum charge per person - a great choice that won't break the bank.  47-38 Vernon Blvd, LIC.  718.389.8781

Zenon Taverna - It's nice to see that one of my favorite traditional Greek restaurants is open for business today and tomorrow.  Reservations are highly recommended and they'll be serving their usual specialties all day and evening.  Some of my favorites include the keftedes (Greek meatballs), loukaniko (homemade Cypriot sausage), grilled halloumi cheese and their sweet semolina cake, flavored with rosewater.  34-10 31st Avenue, Astoria NY 11106.  718.956.0133

Queens Comfort - For something a little different on Christmas Eve, try the brunch at Queens Comfort.  Specialties include thick-cut brioche French toast with cinnamon sugar butter and maple syrup (pictured above), BBQ shrimp and grits, a fried green tomato sandwich and more.  They're open from 10 a.m. till the evening so come on in.  40-09 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11103.  718.728.2350

Valentine's Day in Astoria

It's that time of year again and love is in the air. Ok...that was pretty cheesy, as I tend to think of Valentine's day more as a fun day to celebrate with friends, family and significant others, rather than making a big to-do of it.  It's a day that you should have fun with and not stress out about.  Plus...it's a great excuse for eating out and a lot of Astoria/LIC restaurants are getting ready for it by featuring celebratory specials.  I wanted to outline them for you here, so no matter with whom you celebrate this day with, I hope you have a fantastic time.

Vesta - Always pulling out all the stops, Vesta welcomes V-Day with a 3-course menu made up of local, organic ingredients and a glass of prosecco.  You can expect some of their signature favorites such as a braised veal Osso Bucco and the very famous, Baby Jesus Cake.  The prix-fixe is $50 per person.  21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.545.5550

Cavo
- Usually a pricey option, this year Cavo whipped out a refreshingly price-conscious menu with a 3-course prix-fixe for just $45 per person.  The food options are tantalizing, including a saganaki cheese flambee, four-hour braised black angus short ribs, and even a Cupid's chocolate surprise for dessert.  42-18 31st Avenue, Astoria.  718.721.1001

L'Artiste - Just a few steps from Cavo, you've got L'Artiste, which is the way to go if you want a romantic, intimate meal.  They're featuring a 5-course sophisticated French menu with a glass of champagne and a glass of wine for $75/person.  I know the price may sound steep, but the quality of food and the service are impeccable.  42-20 31st Avenue, Astoria. 646.309.7504

Seva - From a treat to a steal, Seva is a fantastic V-Day option if you're on a budget.  For $15/person you can score a 3-course menu full of homey, comforting Indian dishes.  And for just $10 more, you can get wine with that samosa too!  30-07 34th Street, Astoria.  718.626.4440

Veslo - This new Croatian eatery is certainly picking up steam, offering a robust 5-course V-Day prix-fixe for $50/person.  A mix of seafood, pasta and meat grace the menu and as for dessert, Croatian-style crepes are also in store.  This special is valid from 2/11 - 2/14 - enjoy! 32-11 Broadway, Astoria. 718.728.0549

DiWine - Are you a wine lover? If so, you won't want to miss DiWine's 4-course special menu, which also includes a glass of wine.  You can always ask one of their experts about specific wines to pair with this thoughtful menu, which includes items such as a duck confit spring roll, a braised lamb shank, banana walnut bread pudding and much more.  The special will set you back $65/person.  41-15 31st Avenue, Astoria. 718.777.1355

Ornella - It's no secret that I turn to Ornella for virtually every occassion.  While there's a $35 3-course Menu Romantico prix-fixe, you can also choose from their extensive menu of fresh pastas, meat (the pork Osso Bucco is amazing!) or their newest creation, sanguinaccio (black pudding and chiacchiere fritters).  29-17 23rd Avenue, Astoria.  718.777.9477

eXo - This delicious Greek resto is offering a 5-course menu with comforting food, boasting innovative preparation.  You can expect items such as sizzling saganaki, lobster & orzo bisque, Montauk swordfish souvlaki, grilled hanger steak with...get this, Greek feta tater tots, and more.  The dinner is $68/person with a complimentary glass of champagne and even a free bottle of wine if you bring in another couple. Now that's an incentive!  15-16 149th Street, Whitestone.  718.767.4396

Ovelia
- This year, Ovelia is sticking to their traditional dinner menu for V-day but where they're spicing things up is dessert.  With every entree order, you can also get a choice of a special dessert including a house-made raspberry sorbet with fresh raspberries or a hot brownie with ice cream and spicy caramel dressing. Sounds sexy!  34-01 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.721.7217

Testaccio
- This stylish Italian resto in LIC will be celebrating with a 3-course menu including a glass of champagne for $75/person.  Before you write that off as too expensive, just look at the the menu, which boasts lobster cappuccino, panko crusted crab-cakes, Osso Bucco, braised short ribs, wood oven roasted king crab legs, Nutella mousse with vinsanto soaked raisins and other delectable treats.  47-30 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City.  718.937.2900

Mojave - Always ready to celebrate, Mojave will have a 3-course V-Day menu including coffee/tea and one complimentary V-Day cocktail.  They've made the menu extra special by putting on whimsy items such as Valentine's Lovers Soup, white grape truffles and more.  At $49/person, it promises good value.  22-36 31st Street, Astoria. 718.545.4100

Studio Square
- Here's something different to do for people who are looking to mix and mingle on V-Day.  Studio Square will be hosting a "Single and Ready to Mingle" party, which starts at 5 p.m. and goes on all night.  Ladies drink for $1, so even if you don't catch your ideal valentine ladies, at least you'll drink for cheap.  35-33 36th Street, Astoria. 718.383.1001

Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden - I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed that Bohemian Hall was featuring a V-Day dinner.  Their 3-course prix-fixe offers a simple menu and two glasses of champagne for $75/couple.  Maybe you can trade the latter in for beer!  29-19 24th Avenue, Astoria. 718.274.4925

Vesta, one of the Astorian restaurants I love is teaming up with a new rooftop farm in LIC called the Brooklyn Grange to offer a new CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) in the neighborhood.  Headed by a local group of farmers and entrepreneurs, the Brooklyn Grange is an acre long rooftop farm located at 37-18 Northern Blvd in Long Island City, producing locally-grown produce that's distributed to local businesses and individuals.

You'll now have the opportunity to sign up for a 15-week seasonal produce share for $280 - that's less than $20 a week worth of locally grown, organic produce.  You can sign up anytime between now and July 16th. Check out all the other important deets below:

Rooftop to Tabletop Dinner at Vesta

Vesta - 21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11102
718.545.5550
N/W Train to 30th Avenue
www.vestavino.com

Vesta, a clear favorite neighborhood gem of mine has gained many new converts over the past year. It's easy to see why, with their infectious warmth and hospitality, a cozy setting that lets you relax and the focal point - delectable, locally-sourced, organic food.

It is this philosophy of local, organic and sustainable food that was the focus of Monday's Rooftop to Tabletop dinner. Why rooftop? Well because Vesta gets their produce from an innovative local producer called Rooftop Farms, based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Besides it being super cool and good for the environment and for our community, their products are fresh and absolutely delicious. Just take a gander at the yummy dinner they produced:

Stuffed Squash Blossoms - I adore squash blossoms and was looking forward to having them again. Vesta's version was scrumptious, coated in a thick, crispy crust, stuffed with hearty
goat's cheese.
I loved the contrast in textures and dipping one of these beauties into the crushed tomato & toasted garlic chutney made it even better. One suggestion given to me by a fellow dining companion, Arthur Schwartz (yes, the Arthur Schwartz aka The Food Maven and author of Jewish Home Cooking), was to bring out the flavor in the blossoms more by maybe making the crust thinner.

Baby Beet Salad - Beets are one of my favorite vegetables, to the point where I'm a bit obsessed with them.
I had a beet salad for lunch earlier that day but seeing this vegetable at the dinner table, made me very happy. I loved the contrast in colors - there were red and yellow beets, which had a hint of sweetness. Dressed with buttery pistachios, it was a great way to start the meal. The "salad" part consisted of slightly bitter mustard greens, bringing the senses to attention.

Roasted Duck Breast - Usually picky about my duck meat (it could be fatty and gamey), this was anything but. Glazed with a hot pepper agrodolce, it brought both sweetness and tartness to the tastebuds. I loved the way it was cooked - medium-rare and the cut was nice and lean.

Braised Veal Cheeks and Crispy Sweetbreads - A new dish for me on both counts, I was eager to try it. The veal was so tender that it fell apart in perfect little sections. I liked alternating my bites between the meat and the thickly coated, crunchy sweetbreads, which were just slightly chewy and moist inside.

Veggie Sides - The veal and sweetbreads were coupled with fresh, seasonal vegetables including earthy green and purple kale, interlaced with heirloom cherry tomatoes. I loved the combination, as the tomatoes provided a burst of sweetness - a good contrast with the bitter kale.

Another side was the charred green, yellow and even purple string beans, seasoned with lemons and almonds. I've never seen this amount of color on beans and was fascinated. They were not only crunchy and flavorful, they were light enough to make you reach for seconds.

My favorite side was the roasted eggplant, topped with Ouray cheese and basil. Although the dish was simple, the eggplant was roasted to perfection with a slightly crispy outside and a soft, chewy inside. The cheese was a great pairing, with its buttery, tangy bite - it made an ordinary vegetable feel more substantial.

Ricotta Gelato - Because I've tasted Vesta's fluffy-as-clouds ricotta cheese, I knew that the gelato would be a winner. The consistency was perfect - soft enough to divide easily with a spoon. It was creamy yet not overly rich that you needed to chase it with a beverage. There was a tomato puree on the side that really made it sing - it was sweet, a bit acidy, and when combined with the gentle ricotta gelato, it produced a refreshing finish to the meal.

Bundt Cakes - We each received individually wrapped bundt cakes, courtesy of Bundt A Bakery, as favors. I liked the concept of the bundt, a throwback to old fashioned, comfort baking. Taking a bite out of Arthur's, I loved its airy dough, which was flavored by fragrant spices - cinnamon, cloves and honey too!

The dinner was a big success from many perspectives - Vesta got to show off their wonderful, farm supplier, we had the chance to sample and learn about new foods and most of all, everyone just had a good ol' time. To put it in layman terms, if you haven't been to Vesta yet, you're missing out!
