A Very Lobsterific Valentine's Day

This past Valentine's Day was a lot of fun and pretty low-key too, as Dan and I stayed in and made surf and turf for dinner.  Part of that was boiling a giant live lobster, which was an experience we'll never forget.  We got a pretty big guy that you see above--a 2 pounder--and split it equally.  Even though it was our first time, I'd say we did pretty well and really enjoyed the sweet, succulent meat from the claws.  The tail was tasty too, but a little overdone - however, it was still such a nice treat, especially when dipped into the hot buttah.

The simplest way to cook a lobster at home is to boil it.  Here's what you do:

1.  You pick up the poor thing in your hands and drop it into a big pot of boiling water.  Make sure the water is seasoned with plenty of salt water (and by plenty, I mean 3-4 large handfuls of it)

2.  Depending on the weight of your lobster, boil it about 10 minutes per pound - so we boiled it for roughly 20 minutes
3.  Take out of the water and let rest for about 5 minutes

4.  Serve with warm clarified butter

We enjoyed this dish with a heaping spoonful of garlic mashed potatoes and lemon-misted asparagus.  Mmmm...it was a luxuriously decadent meal.  I hope you try it too sometimes.

Valentine's Day Plans in Astoria

Another instrumental day in the food world that's coming up is Valentine's Day.  As we get closer, I'm seeing more and more eateries reveal their V-Day menus and I wanted to share a few of them with you here.

The Queens Kickshaw - For a casual V-day, grab your hunny or your friends and head on over to this grilled cheese haven, where they'll be featuring a special 5-course prix fixe on the 14th and an anti V-day celebration on the 15th.  I was excited to learn that on V-day evening they'll be featuring a special Beet Pasta Alfredo.  40-17 Broadway, Astoria.  718.777.0913

Tournesol - If you love French food, you're going to really enjoy dinner at this quaint LIC bistro.  They've got a special menu for V-day, which includes dishes such as foie gras, coq au vin, a braised lamb shank, scallops risotto, crepe suzette and more.  The dinner will set you back $49/person and it'll be mighty romantic.  50-12 Vernon Blvd, LIC.  718.472.4355

Veslo - I love the looks of Veslo's V-day menu, which is a 3-courser for $50/person, featuring yummies such as clams casino, stuffed mushrooms, a crown rack of lamb, Croatian style crepes and more.  They'll also have some nice live music to get everyone in a loverly mood.  32-11 Broadway, Astoria.  718.728.0549

La Guli Pastry Shop - Preparing V-day dinner at home and don't feel like baking dessert? La Guli always delivers with lovely looking (and tasting) V-Day treats such as cookies, cakes, cannolis and other goodies.  One of my favorite things to get here even though it's not Valentine's Day related are the chocolate mousse mice - they're adorable.  29-15 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria.  718.728.5612

Chocolate Girl - Do you guys know about Gnosis Chocolate? Its founder, Vanessa is from Astoria and has been making delicious raw chocolate since 2008.  For V-Day, you can enjoy special seasonal goodies such as the "Passion Truffle Collection," featuring flavors such as Wild White Rose, Madagascar Mylk, Passionfruit Cupuacu and more.  You can also find their chocolates in the neighborhood at places such as Sai Organics, Astoria Wines & Spirits, Vitality & Health, Fresh Start Market, and Broadway Natural.

A Sweet Panini for your Sweetie

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I wanted to bring you a fun little idea for a dessert that I worked up this past weekend while visiting friends, Matt & Kate in Florida.  As we experimented with their new panini press, I thought to make a sweet panini to end our all-day eating fest.  It worked out quite well and I think you’ll love it too, especially if you’re trying to end your Valentine’s Day dinner with a sweet little something.

The idea for this dish came from my favorite crepe filling, bananas and
Nutella, and I also improvised by adding marshmallows.  I sandwiched this yummy combination between two slices of sweet raisin challah bread, spread some sweet butter on each side and pressed that baby till it oozed with deliciousness.

After taking it out of the panini press, Dan cut it into long strips and served it with ½ full glasses of milk, which was a lovely combination.  We all devoured them in minutes, each one of us taking at least 3 pieces of this sweet, melty treat.  I hope you try it at home and enjoy it with your favorite people.

Fooditka’s Sweet Pressed Panini

Ingredients (serves 5)

1 loaf of raisin challah bread, sliced
Nutella
2 bananas, sliced into ¼” inch pieces
4 – 5 large marshmallows, ripped into chunks or you can use the bite sized variety
Sweet butter for spreading

Directions
:
Preheat your panini press or a grill pan until it’s very hot.

Spread a generous layer of Nutella on one side of your sandwich.  Layer with slices of banana and then top with marshmallows.  Then top with one more slice of bread.  Butter each side of the sandwich and place in the pre-heated panini press or grill pan.  Cook for about 5 – 7 minutes or until the top is golden brown and all the ingredients inside have melted.  It’s OK and actually quite nice to let the marshmallow drip over the side of the bread.  Enjoy with a cold glass of milk.

Valentine's Day in Astoria

It's that time of year again and love is in the air. Ok...that was pretty cheesy, as I tend to think of Valentine's day more as a fun day to celebrate with friends, family and significant others, rather than making a big to-do of it.  It's a day that you should have fun with and not stress out about.  Plus...it's a great excuse for eating out and a lot of Astoria/LIC restaurants are getting ready for it by featuring celebratory specials.  I wanted to outline them for you here, so no matter with whom you celebrate this day with, I hope you have a fantastic time.

Vesta - Always pulling out all the stops, Vesta welcomes V-Day with a 3-course menu made up of local, organic ingredients and a glass of prosecco.  You can expect some of their signature favorites such as a braised veal Osso Bucco and the very famous, Baby Jesus Cake.  The prix-fixe is $50 per person.  21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.545.5550

Cavo
- Usually a pricey option, this year Cavo whipped out a refreshingly price-conscious menu with a 3-course prix-fixe for just $45 per person.  The food options are tantalizing, including a saganaki cheese flambee, four-hour braised black angus short ribs, and even a Cupid's chocolate surprise for dessert.  42-18 31st Avenue, Astoria.  718.721.1001

L'Artiste - Just a few steps from Cavo, you've got L'Artiste, which is the way to go if you want a romantic, intimate meal.  They're featuring a 5-course sophisticated French menu with a glass of champagne and a glass of wine for $75/person.  I know the price may sound steep, but the quality of food and the service are impeccable.  42-20 31st Avenue, Astoria. 646.309.7504

Seva - From a treat to a steal, Seva is a fantastic V-Day option if you're on a budget.  For $15/person you can score a 3-course menu full of homey, comforting Indian dishes.  And for just $10 more, you can get wine with that samosa too!  30-07 34th Street, Astoria.  718.626.4440

Veslo - This new Croatian eatery is certainly picking up steam, offering a robust 5-course V-Day prix-fixe for $50/person.  A mix of seafood, pasta and meat grace the menu and as for dessert, Croatian-style crepes are also in store.  This special is valid from 2/11 - 2/14 - enjoy! 32-11 Broadway, Astoria. 718.728.0549

DiWine - Are you a wine lover? If so, you won't want to miss DiWine's 4-course special menu, which also includes a glass of wine.  You can always ask one of their experts about specific wines to pair with this thoughtful menu, which includes items such as a duck confit spring roll, a braised lamb shank, banana walnut bread pudding and much more.  The special will set you back $65/person.  41-15 31st Avenue, Astoria. 718.777.1355

Ornella - It's no secret that I turn to Ornella for virtually every occassion.  While there's a $35 3-course Menu Romantico prix-fixe, you can also choose from their extensive menu of fresh pastas, meat (the pork Osso Bucco is amazing!) or their newest creation, sanguinaccio (black pudding and chiacchiere fritters).  29-17 23rd Avenue, Astoria.  718.777.9477

eXo - This delicious Greek resto is offering a 5-course menu with comforting food, boasting innovative preparation.  You can expect items such as sizzling saganaki, lobster & orzo bisque, Montauk swordfish souvlaki, grilled hanger steak with...get this, Greek feta tater tots, and more.  The dinner is $68/person with a complimentary glass of champagne and even a free bottle of wine if you bring in another couple. Now that's an incentive!  15-16 149th Street, Whitestone.  718.767.4396

Ovelia
- This year, Ovelia is sticking to their traditional dinner menu for V-day but where they're spicing things up is dessert.  With every entree order, you can also get a choice of a special dessert including a house-made raspberry sorbet with fresh raspberries or a hot brownie with ice cream and spicy caramel dressing. Sounds sexy!  34-01 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.721.7217

Testaccio
- This stylish Italian resto in LIC will be celebrating with a 3-course menu including a glass of champagne for $75/person.  Before you write that off as too expensive, just look at the the menu, which boasts lobster cappuccino, panko crusted crab-cakes, Osso Bucco, braised short ribs, wood oven roasted king crab legs, Nutella mousse with vinsanto soaked raisins and other delectable treats.  47-30 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City.  718.937.2900

Mojave - Always ready to celebrate, Mojave will have a 3-course V-Day menu including coffee/tea and one complimentary V-Day cocktail.  They've made the menu extra special by putting on whimsy items such as Valentine's Lovers Soup, white grape truffles and more.  At $49/person, it promises good value.  22-36 31st Street, Astoria. 718.545.4100

Studio Square
- Here's something different to do for people who are looking to mix and mingle on V-Day.  Studio Square will be hosting a "Single and Ready to Mingle" party, which starts at 5 p.m. and goes on all night.  Ladies drink for $1, so even if you don't catch your ideal valentine ladies, at least you'll drink for cheap.  35-33 36th Street, Astoria. 718.383.1001

Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden - I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed that Bohemian Hall was featuring a V-Day dinner.  Their 3-course prix-fixe offers a simple menu and two glasses of champagne for $75/couple.  Maybe you can trade the latter in for beer!  29-19 24th Avenue, Astoria. 718.274.4925

V-Day at Testaccio

I can't believe that Valentine's Day is right around the corner.  While I'm not a huge fan of the ultra expensive Manhattan restaurant options, there are plenty of fun offers happening right here in our nabe.  One that particularly caught my eye this week is Testaccio, the new (and chic) modern Italian eatery in LIC.  While it still offers a prix-fixe menu, the cost isn't exorbitant and the dishes sound scrumptious.  It's an undoubtedly romantic place for you and your special guy or gal.  And if you prefer to spend this day with a big group of great friends, it'll do the trick too.

Testaccio Valentine's Day Menu: $55 per person (includes a glass of champagne)

A "Vonderful" Vesta Valentine's

Last night's Valentine's Day dinner at Vesta was a smash hit. I know that I've been giving Vesta lots of praise, but it's for a good reason--they serve phenomenal food in a lovely setting, and boast good prices too. Dan and I attended the 7:00pm Valentine's Day seating, which was just the perfect way to start the night. Below is a synopsis of our festive dishes:

Oysters Three Ways - Though this starter was sophisticated and delicate, it was my least favorite part of the meal. The three techniques in which the oysters were presented included shucked with orange flavor, fried and wrapped in an endive cup, and a shooter with limoncello, chili, horseradish and tarragon. Out of the three, I preferred the fried one because it contained simple yet innovative flavors--the endive wrap was a nice surprise and provided a refreshing crunch. I secretly wished that my trio was made entirely of fried oysters.

Hudson Penne - Dan ordered this as his app and it was wonderful. The pasta was cooked perfectly and slightly al-dente, which did not go unnoticed. I appreciated that it wasn't drenched in red sauce and instead incorporated an array of fresh ingredients such as fennel, basil, radicchio and ricotta salata cheese. The veggies added nice earthiness while the ricotta salata brought forth a touch of heartiness and a jolt of salt.

Imported Burrata Mozzarella - This was an extra appetizer, which we couldn't refuse. It was my favorite starter and included a round of creamy fresh mozzarella cheese, sprinkled with dark sea salt and a side of toasty bread and cherry tomato, olive and basil salad. Everything about the dish was superb and I especially loved how soft and luxurious the mozzarella was--it had such a gentle flavor that when paired with the acidy side salad and the toast, it made your tastebuds dance.

Braised Lamb Shank - Dan and I both chose this entree and it exceeded our expectations so much, that we'll have to get it again next time. First off, the portion was incredibly generous, especially with respect to meat. Secondly, the meat was outstanding - so tender and flavorful, it was literally falling off the bone and there were many pieces to choose from. The hazelnut cous-cous that served as the bed for this beauty was outstanding. I generally enjoy good cous-cous but have never had it with hazelnuts, which I'll have to try more often. It seemed that they were also braised and when paired with the slightly sweet cippolini onions, it made for a decadent combination.

Pear Strudel - As I'm a huge fan of Vesta's Baby Jesus Cake, the pear strudel was Dan's choice. Again, the portion was large and definitely more than enough to split between two people. I loved the flaky, lightly sugared crust. The interior was warm and soft, oozing with pears and even cherries. In the middle of finishing it, I also detected chocolate (or at least that's what my food addled brain was telling me), which is always a plus in my book.

Aside from all of the above mentioned stand-outs, Vesta served every couple a complimentary glass of champagne and a pair of beautifully wrapped butter cookies to bring home. It was nice and yet another special touch, reaffirming why Vesta is a place that you'll want to return to in the future.

Service and Cost:
Overall, the waitstaff did an exceptional job. They were dressed festively and made the night feel even more special. Very close attention was payed to every detail--from making sure that our glasses were full to refreshing our silverware when needed. Everyone was on-point and seemed happy to serve us, as if we were guests in their own house.

In terms of cost, we paid $50 per person for a three-course prix-fixe, including champagne. It was exceptional and worth every penny. I'll gladly return to Vesta in the near future and am hoping to try their brunch next.

V-Day at Mundo

Image provided by Mundo

Valentine's Day is on a Saturday this year and it's never early enough to start planning. I received word about a prix-fixe special at Mundo. This restaurant is one of my Astoria favorites and the food is always done right. The only draw-back is that it's small so if you're interested, make reservations now. There are three seatings offered: 6pm, 8:15pm and 10:15pm. The cost is $80 per couple not including tax and tip. Take a look at the below menu and if it catches your eye, call Mundo to make a reservation:

Complimentary Gluhwein:
Warm and spiced wine

Appetizer Platter:
Mini red sonja over green leaf lettuce, Russian salad, creamy eggplant salad in a phyllo dough shell, mini baked spinach and feta empanada, artichoke heart salad

Main Course:
Jumbo Portobello Ravioli - With ricotta and Parmesan in tomato vodka sauce

Shrimp Casserole - In tomato, green pepper and garlic sauce topped with Jack and cheddar cheese with a side of yellow Mexican rice

Beef Roast - With au jus topped with caramelized onions with a side of creamy eggplant puree and Moroccan couscous with dried fruits, nuts and greens

Dessert:
Heavenly Chocolate Souffle - Baked to perfection, topped with ice cream to share

Mundo opens at 1pm on Valentine's Day and they'll only be serving the prix-fixe that day. The regular menu will not be available.
