Baseball season has officially returned, and with lots of loyal Mets and Yankees fans amongst us, I thought to put together a helpful Astoria guide of where to catch the games.  Hope you enjoy the action in these fun, festive and sports oriented spots.

Dillinger's - Having a positive experience at Dillinger's myself, I always get a positive response when asking Astoria natives about it.  They have great food and drinks special virtually every day of the week, with Tuesdays being their 25 cent wing night.  Dillinger's creates a perfect atmosphere for watching sports such as baseball.  46-19 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.956.5601

School's Out for the Summer Party at Studio Square

I don't know about you guys, but it's been a little while since I've been to Studio Square Beer Garden.  I'm looking forward to those warm summer nights when I can camp out with a tall glass of beer and some good food and friends.  

While we've been hibernating inside this winter and what some call spring, Studio Square has been busy planning away some new, fun events to get you in the door.  Here's one that's coming up in the near future that made me feel nostalgic.  It's a School's Out for the Summer Teacher party, which honors our educators on the last day of public school this year, which is June 26th.  Do you remember that glorious day when you knew all your school work was done and you were free for the next two months? I do...and so does Studio Square apparently.  Here's what they're planning:

Oktoberfest is Here!

There's nothing like celebrating Oktoberfest in Munich, like I did last year, but even here in our neck of the woods, it's still a lot of fun and a big deal.  You can bring your friends and stay out all weekend, enjoying cold ones and eating some hearty, delicious food.  Here are three great places that'll give it to you:

Football Season is Back - Where to Watch, Eat and Drink

With Sunday and Monday night football back in full swing now, it seems like everyone's got the fever!  I know this past Thursday was a huge night for it, and folks seemed to be up and about, enjoying the games.  In the spirit of sportsmanship, I wanted to provide you with a quick little roundup of places in Astoria where you can watch, eat, drink and cheer on your team.

Sunday:

A Burger Blitz is Coming to Studio Square

S Prime - There's a New Steakhouse in Town

The opening of this new "boutique steakhouse" has recently been brought to my attention by Meg, who scoped it out while walking around the nabe.  There's been a lot of chatter about it in the last week or so, and now we can all see what it's about, as it's officially open.  

Run by the folks that also own Studio Square (notice its close proximity to the beer garden) as well Cavo, S Prime looks to be a lush, high-class, high-priced-ticket joint, fit for special occasions.  I personally really enjoy a good steakhouse and am willing and excited to check it out.  In the meantime, here's a peek at a few items on their menu.  Mind you this is definitely a treat for the wallet, but hopefully a worthy one.

Eurocup Action in Astoria

With the Eurocup 2012 in full swing right now, everyone is catching a part of the action, and Astoria is delivering a fabulous atmosphere to watch the games.  Many of the bars in the nabe are showcasing the daily matches, some of them running great gametime specials.  Here's a small sampling of the venues where you can enjoy some futbal!

With Cinco de Mayo fast approaching, and this year it being on a Saturday, everyone is surely looking for ways to celebrate.  There's going to be a lot of awesomeness in the nabe focused around this joyous holiday, and I was happy to see that Studio Square is going to be hosting a big shin-dig, in their customary fashion.  Here are the deets, and I hope you make it out that day!

Studio Square's Summer Spit BBQ is Back

Last year's first Summer Spit BBQ event at Studio Square was a huge success, and by the looks of it, it's become an annual event.  Happening again this year on June 3rd, Chef David Burke will once again grace everyone with his presence at the bbq pit.  

Enjoying last year's event very much, I most admired Chef Burke's participation in the whole thing, as he worked his butt off and personally greeted guests and served them freshly made bbq specialties.  It was really something, and as you can see above, I cozied up to him as well.  He was super friendly!

But aside from the celebrity chef interaction, the food at the event was really fabulous and so plentiful.  In addition to the gorgeously prepared food, served buffet style, there were also passed hors d'oeuvres as well Jim Beam tastings.  It's really a great way to spend an entire afternoon with your hard-core foodie friends.  The tickets are an investment, but definitely worth it, as you can stay for up to 5 hours and eat all the goodies you like.  There's an early bird special going on right now:

New Year's Bash at Studio Square

With the holidays almost officially here, it's definitely not too early to start thinking about New Year's Eve.  Unfortunately, because we happen to live in one of the best cities in the world, this holiday is pretty darn expensive to enjoy when you go out on the town.  But it doesn't always have to be - especially if you spend it in Astoria.  Lots of places will feature New Year's Eve specials (and I'll elaborate on that a bit later), but one place in particular, I wanted to highlight is Studio Square.

I always enjoy coming here for special occasions and have spent a recent Halloween and many big sporting events in its surroundings.  It's always a good time, and what I love about it is that it never feels overcrowded, since there's so much space inside and out.  They're having a New Years Eve Bash that sounds lovely and includes:

Taking table reservations, especially if you're coming with a big group

The shin-dig starts at 8 p.m. and goes on all night.  And the best part is, it's only a $15 cover.

Astoria Brewhouse - This cheery bar always has something lively going on during Halloween.  Their Saturday night costume contest promises some exciting winnings such as a $100, $50 and a $25 bar tab pick-up, so prepare to drink your heart out.  Show up anytime after 10 p.m. and stay all night.  28-50 31st Street, Astoria.  718.728.0050

Hellgate Social - A favorite spot for Halloween, this year they're stepping it up with a "Lost in Space" theme Halloween party, full on with aliens and other extra terrestrial embellishments, including themed drinks.  There's no cover and costumes are a must.  Walk in anytime after 6 p.m. and stay as long as you'd like.  12-21 Astoria Blvd, Astoria.  718.204.8313

Taqueria El Jardin Event at Studio Square

This year has certainly been lively for Studio Square, as far as events go.  Every time I visit (and I was actually there last night for my friend Moses' big going away party. Sniff), I find out about another cool event they're putting together.  In June, it was their Summer Spit BBQ, featuring Chef David Burke, and this month is another guest chef event with Toloache Chef, Julian Medina.  

The theme of this shin dig is Taqueria El Jardin, which as you can probably infer, celebrates delicious Mexican cuisine with a special menu, prepared by Chef Medina, along with drink pairings.  Similarly to the BBQ event, the Taqueria celebration will go pretty much the whole day, from 12 p.m. - 6 p.m. so you have plenty of time to get your grub and drink on.  Here's what you can expect:

Shell-Shocked Event at The Garden @ Studio Square

They first brought you the Summer Spit BBQ with Chef David Burke, and now judging by this new oyster event that's about to hit the streets in August, it seems that The Garden @ Studio Square has quite a number of fun festivities up their sleeve. 

The June BBQ was an awesome time, and I loved the organized way in which it was put together, infused with culinary star power, fantastic food, music and a generally fun crowd.

The cleverly named "Shell-Shocked" event sounds great too and so appropriate for the summer.  Can't you just smell the freshness of the sea just by reading about it?  Here's what to expect...

Studio Square's First Annual Summer Spit BBQ was Sizzlin'

Looking forward this year's first annual Studio Square Summer Spit BBQ, hosted by Chef David Burke and Jim Koch, the event delivered on all counts - food, drinks and culinary star power.  Through my experience at food events that showcase famous food celebrities, I was expecting Chef Burke to show up, mix and mingle and be on his way.  But that was so not the case - not only did he do the former, he worked his butt off, worked the fire pit, served the food and socialized with the crowd.

Lucky enough to come in during the VIP tasting hour, I got a chance to sample everything before it got crowded.  It was clear from the start that this event was well organized, thought out, and there were enough people helping out to keep it that way.

Here are some of the delicious things I tried:

Angry Pigs in Blankets - I loved Studio Square's take on this classic party appetizer, as it was spiced with some cayenne for that extra kick.  The pigs didn't taste oily and the blankets were deliciously buttery.  As you can see from the above pic, the presentation was creative and vibrant, taking these little piggys out for a stroll on the green grass.

Fried Green Beans - Again inventive with presentation, these were served out of Sam Adams beer cartons and they were delicious.  Crispy on the outside with a nice crunch also when you bit into them, it was a fun take on a simple comfort food.  The batter was infused with some smoky spices that gave the coating nice color, but not an overpowering taste.

Sweet Potato Chips - Wow! These were absolutely delectable - thin, crunchy, curly and sweetened with brown sugar and cinnamon.  They were a nice side with the meats and added an almost desserty element.

Chicken Wings - As soon as I spotted the glaze on these babies, I had a feeling they were going to be good. Sticky, mapley, a little spicy and also smoky, they had a touch of Asian influence in them.  The actual meat was moist and delicious and after eating a few, you needed more than a handful of napkins to rectify the situation.

Bacon on a Stick! - My favorite appetizer, it was served simply on a stick.  And what a beautiful sight it was to see thick slab bacon, cooked to perfection and glazed in a sweet maple mustard.  Each bite combined my beloved flavors of sweet and savory, making this both an appetizer and a decadent dessert.  Dessert not for the faint of heart, that is.

The Pig! - The whole roasted pig was truly a work of art, roasting beautifully on a large grill, brought in especially for this event.  It was a treat to witness Chef David Burke basting the beast and then cutting off chunky pieces for all of us to enjoy.  I had a few bites and had the pleasure of tasting the well done, charred skin, which was my favorite part.  In terms of the actual meat, it was soft, succulent and slightly sweet, albeit fatty, which is a given with pig.  Overall a splendid treat to top off the gluttony.

David Burke Signature Cheesecake Lollipops - I loved seeing a little dessert at the end of the buffet, with these signature David Burke treats. I grabbed a chocolate toffee creation that had dark chocolate crunchies on the outside and a cold, creamy-cheesecakey middle.  I overhead some people call them ice cream pops, and they could've passed for just that.  Mmmm...they were refreshing.

Besides all the food, Sam Adams, this event's official sponsor had all their big signature ales on tap, including my favorite, the Cherry Wheat.  The serving cup size was considerably smaller than if you visited on a regular day, but the beauty was that you can go back as many times as you pleased, so it pretty much evened out.

If you hadn't had the chance to experience this awesome event this year, I hope you consider it next year.  It was a blast!

First Annual Summer Spit BBQ is This Sunday!

A lot of you may have noticed the heavy-up promotion around a big, exciting event happening at the Studio Square beer garden this Sunday.  Summer Spit BBQ, hosted by celebrity food personalities, Jim Koch and famous restaurateur and Chef, David Burke promises to be a high-profile afternoon of eating, drinking and indulging.  Personally, I can't wait to check it out and am absolutely delighted and impressed that our wonderful little neighborhood is hosting such a food-influencer shin-dig.  Here are the deets - you can still buy your tickets ahead of time, which is highly suggested.

A Spooktacular Halloween in Astoria

Happy almost Halloween Astorians!  As I usually do, I've prepared a menu of festive Halloween to-dos happening in and around Astoria.  It's great that the celebration falls on a Saturday this year, which means tons of fun parties, drinks specials and costume fun.  And just in case you're wondering, that's a picture of me in my friend Moses' Freddy mask.  Thought it made my Bond Girl outfit a little zestier.  Whatever you end up doing, hope it's spooktacular!
