Pachanga Patterson Wins Us Over Again

In the mood for a good Mexican meal this Monday, Dan and I headed over to Vesta's little sister, Pachanga Patterson.  I've already been there a few months ago, but Dan was a virgin.  Not worried about him liking it, my suspicions proved right, as he fell in love with it instantly - the added bonus being the amazing backyard seating area we got to enjoy on this warm, summer night.

Sitting here was a treat, as its charming and cheery vibe really gave us that much needed respite from the craziness of city life.  I loved the birch paneling on the walls and floor, which gave it that added jolt of newness.  That, coupled with colorful umbrellas, little hanging lights and plenty of greenery made it a fantastic place to unwind and linger.

Since the menu is limited, there's only a few things I haven't yet tried, and here they are:

Vintage Steak Tacos - Dan ordered these, as they were the healthiest taco option on the menu, given they are grilled.  Basted in a smoky, thick salsa, the steak was far from dry and it was grilled to a nice medium texture (sans any chewiness).  The mix of onions and cilantro on top gave each bite that extra zing and freshness, looking very plain but tasting anything but.  Overall, the dish was very light and allowed room for other things such as snacking on chunky/creamy guacamole.  I know it sounds like a contradiction, but it was indeed both of those things.

Summer Smoke Margarita - My cocktail of the night, I enjoyed its spicy flavor and the smoky aftertaste that lingered on my tastebuds after each sip.  Although it looked like any ordinary margarita on the rocks, it wasn't.  You could taste the freshness and quality of ingredients instantly, and that smoke factor was something else.

Service and Cost:
As always, the service was hospitable, attentive yet unobtrusive.  It stands true that whenever I walk into a Giuseppe/Leo establishment, I'm always treated with kindness and friendship.  Even though I've known these guys for a few years now, I observed that everyone is treated this way.  Kudos to that!

Costs are moderate and for a dinner consisting of 2 drinks, an appetizer and 2 entrees, our total was $60 with tax and tip.

Happy Father's Day Astoria - Father's Day Resto Roundup

Happy Father's day to all the great dads out there, including my very special Oci.  That's what we call Dad in Slovak and my American friends find the word intriguing and endearing.  Just like the man himself, pictured above.  In honor of Father's Day, I bring you this resto round-up, and while you'll see that most places are doing business as usual, they still provide a wonderful atmosphere for Dad and the whole fam.

Mojave - Fun times are sure to be had at this Southwestern eatery.  In honor of Father's Day, they'll have a BBQ and an open bar on their patio and even free shots of tequila for Dad. Salud!  22-36 31st Street Astoria NY 11105.  718.545.4100

Cavo - This upscale Greek resto will feature their regular menu for Father's Day but Dads gets pampered with 1/2 priced entrees, so order something expensive.  You can also enjoy $20 pitchers of sangria, which is customary for Sundays.  42-18 31st Avenue, Astoria NY 11103.  718.721.1001

eXo
- You won't want to miss eXo's Trapezi night, which features a whole lamb on a spit, roasted beef, Greek pork shoulder and plenty of sides and meze to go with it.  The whole feast will only set you back $35/person and Dad gets some cold ones on the house!  15-16 149th Street, Whitestone NY 11357.  718.767.4396

Christos Steakhouse
- If Christos isn't the epitome of manly cuisine then I don't know what is.  Take Dad to this staple Greek steakhouse for a gorgeous steak, lobster and classic steakhouse sides with a Greek spin.  They'll have a couple of daily specials for Dad but the menu is staying as is.  41-08 23rd Avenue, Astoria, NY 11105.  718.777.8400

Bistro 33
- Check out this neighborhood favorite for Father's Day, and especially now as it's fresh from being renovated.  As many of you may know, the previously known Side Door ice cream parlor has now been renamed Side Door Sushi and is serving just that.  19-33 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria NY 11105.  718.721.1933

BareBurger - Who wouldn't want to sink their teeth into a juicy, organic burger that comes in 14 different varieties?!  Dad can mix and match his protein with the various fixins and can choose from traditional beef to a more exotic ostrich or bison patty.  33-21 31st Avenue, Astoria NY 11106.  718.777.7011

Zenon Taverna
- If your Dad loves homemade, delectable Greek food, you can't miss Zenon.  My favorite thing to get here is the 16 course meze tasting menu for just $19.95.  Yes...it's true, and yes...it's very delicious and filling.  34-10 31st Avenue, Astoria, NY 11106.  718.956.0133

Vesta
- With their menu always being fresh and seasonal, there's nothing not to love here.  From pizza, pasta, steak, fish, pork and lots of great veggie options, Dad will surely love breaking bread at this local eatery.  They have plenty of wonderfully chosen wines on the menu too so don't forget to order a glass or a bottle.  21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11102.  718.545.5550

Ornella
- Here's an idea for you...celebrate with Dad on Monday and take advantage of Ornella's steak night where all steak dishes (6 varieties in total!) are only $14.99.  This is a great opportunity to treat Dad, while not breaking the wallet either.  And while you're there, don't miss my absolute favorite dish - the duck meatballs! 29-17 23rd Avenue, Astoria NY 11105.  718.777.9477

Looking Forward to 2011...

2010 was a good year.  A very good year.  Filled with tons of eventful happenings, I was excited to share with you my eclectic, (and I hope) culinarily rich insights.  As I look forward to what the new year will bring for The Foodista (and for you!), I wanted to recap 2010 with a fun highlights reel.  Here are my 10 biggest accomplishments this year, in order of importance.

10.  Taste of Tennis - I had the pleasure of covering this amazing event on the "green" carpet and even managed to cram in a foodie interview with Alex McCord of the Real Housewives of New York.

9. Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation - Being on the planning committee of this amazing charitable food event allowed me to not only to help make it happen, but to also be a part of the action!

8.  Interviewing the Ace of Cakes - How fun it was to meet the cake man himself!  Duff Goldman was just as cool in person as on TV.  Our interview got a little controversial at the end, just take a look.

7.  New York Culinary Experience - Having the honor of covering one of the greatest hands-on culinary events in New York, I got to interact (and cook with!) amazing top chefs such as Babbo's Gina DePalma, Hearth and Terroir's, Chef Marco Canora, SHO Shaun Hergatt's Chef Hergatt and more.

6.  Interviewing Sandra Lee -  The semi-homemade queen and I went one-on-one at the Silver Star diner in NYC, where she talked about her love of tuna fish and the creative ideas that make her who she is.  See the buzz the interview caused in the NYT.

5.  Interviewing Paula Deen - Another Food Network star highlight was meeting the priestess of Southern cooking, Miss Paula Deen.  Not only was she genuine and warm, she really does love her butter more than anything in the world.

4.  Being a Guest on Martha Stewart Living - I was so excited to be a part of Martha's radio show on Sirius XM where I told readers all about the fabulousness of Astoria and about my family dessert favorite, Ceresnova Bublanina.

3.  Judging the French Culinary Institute Student Final - This was a huge honor for me, as I got to taste and critique the dishes of up-and-coming culinary talent.  My fellow judges included high profile chefs such as Carmen Gonzalez of Top Chef Masters and more.

2.  Tasting and Exploring Astoria - From new restaurants such as L'Artiste, MexiQ, 5 Napkin Burger to amazing mainstays such as Vesta, BareBurger, Ovelia, Ornella, Seva and more, Astoria never ceases to amaze in its richness and cultural culinary diversity.

1.  Connecting with You - Most of all, I love interacting and engaging with my community in Astoria, LIC and beyond.  I love the lively commentary that you take part in as a result of my posts, and I hope you find them helpful and valuable.  Your enthusiasm and candid opinions further motivate me to provide you with honest, uncut and behind-the-scenes culinary insight.

Thank you, and Happy New Year to you all.  See you in 2011!

New Year's Celebrations in Astoria

With the effects of this week's snow storm still in the air, have you solidified your New Year's Eve plans?  If not, no worries!  There are plenty of fun options ready and waiting for you to choose from that are still very much available.

Vesta - Welcome 2011 in the spirit of the Roaring 20's, as Vesta encourages you to come dressed in your best flapper, pinstripe suit, top hats or whatever else.  They offer three seatings including one on the early side at 6 p.m. ($50/person), at 8 p.m. ($60/person) and a final one at 10 p.m. ($75/person). The evening includes a four-course dinner menu, a complimentary glass of prosecco and even some fun entertainment (think palm reader) during the late seating.  21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.545.5550

Mojave
- Rockin' in the New Year with a live band, Spitfire, starting at 10:00 p.m., a night at Mojave also boasts a rich 3-course menu and a 3 hour open bar including sangria, margarita, beer & house spirit cocktails.  All this for $95/person.  22-36 31st Street, Astoria. 718.545.4100

Winegasm
- You have all the options in the world if you choose Winegasm as the place to celebrate the New Year.  You can stop in for an early dinner from 7-9 p.m. for $45/person or $65 with a wine pairing, extend that until 2 a.m. with an open bar option for $105/person, or you can come in for just drinks from 10 p.m. - 2 a.m. for $75.  And if that isn't enough, there's a VIP package for $105/person that will get you unlimited champagne, hors d'oeuvres and an open bar from 10 p.m. - 2 a.m.  31-86 37th Street, Astoria. 718.932.3331

El Ay Si
- If you're trying to save your hard earned dough on New Year's Eve, El Ay Si might just be your place.  For $30, you can take advantage of a 3-course prix fixe dinner and a complimentary glass of bubbly.  A midnight party with a live DJ is absolutely free to enjoy.  47-38 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City NY 11101.  718.389.8781

Cafe Bar - More in line with El Ay Si's type of New Year's celebration, Cafe Bar will also keep things low key with a champagne and hors d'oeuvres special from 10 p.m. - 1 a.m. for just $40/person.  32-90 36th Street, Astoria, NY 11103.  718.204.5273

Cienna
- This new restaurant/lounge on 31st Street near Newtown Avenue is hosting a high-profile New Year's shin-dig that includes a delicious sounding menu (including surf & turf) for $95/person with a midnight champagne toast.  The night will continue with a dance party with a 2 hour open bar for $40/person.  You can choose one or the other - or both.  28-18 31st Street, Astoria. 718.726.0088

Ovelia
- You can always count on Ovelia to bring you something spectacular for a special occassion.  Their New Year's partay will feature a four-course dinner packed with plenty of Greek specialties such as Kobe Beef Keftedakia, fried feta cubes, a lamb-burg-ini and a lot more.  Here's the menu in its entirety.  34-01 30th Ave, Astoria, NY 11103. 718.721.7217

Sweet Afton
- One of my favorite watering holes in the nabe, I always feel comfortable and happy when I come here.  For New Year's Eve, they'll have a 3 hour open bar from 9 p.m. - 12 a.m. including champagne and even a bagpiper.  All this fun will set you back $60/person and the proceeds will go to a local charity. How great is that?! 30-09 34th Street, Astoria NY 11103 718.777.2570

DiWine
- Similar to Winegasm, DiWine has a lot of fun New Year's options including a special dinner until 2 a.m. (see menu) as well as a 3 hour open bar option from 10 p.m. - 1 a.m. for $65.  They're also having an incentive deal, during which they'll take off $10 from the open bar price if you decide to dine with them too.  A live DJ will be in-house, spinning great lively beats from 11 p.m. on.  41-15 31st Avenue, Astoria NY 11103.  718.777.1355

Danny Brown Wine & Kitchen
- If you want to go beyond Astoria and LIC, try this Forest Hills gem, which serves expertly-prepared food such as excellent tapas, cheeses, charcuterie, meat and fish.  On New Year's Eve, they'll have their regular menu and the restaurant will close prior to midnight, so make sure to check it out early.  There's no prix-fixe here, so you can get away paying regular prices, which is a plus.  41-15 31st Avenue, Astoria NY 11103.  718.777.1355

Happy New Year Astoria - I wish you all the best!

Give the Gift of Astorian Food this Season

We all love getting pipe dream gifts for the holidays that we normally wouldn't get for ourselves.  Personally, I think there's nothing better than giving or getting the gift of delicious food.  And with so many wonderful new and anchor eateries in Astoria, I wanted to provide you with a mini food-focused holiday gift guide.  Today's choices are all Astorian, but tune in tomorrow for my take on LIC food gifting.

1.  Vesta - Not surprisingly, this locally-sourced Italian-style eatery with an intimate and insider vibe is an Astoria favorite.  Whether you choose to go for lunch, brunch or dinner, their carefully constructed menu boasts the freshest ingredients, including locally-sourced veggies.  My personal recommendations are any of their thin crust pizzas, the grandma-style lasagna and the Baby Jesus Cake (obvi). Gift certificates are available for purchase at the restaurant.  21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.545.5550

2.  Ornella - I don't have to tell you how much I adore Ornella - the warm vibe, the excellent service and the food just says it all.  Whatever pasta choice your imagination dreams up, they have it.  Traditional white flour pasta, chestnut pasta, buckwheat pasta, rice flour pasta - the options are extensive. It's not only a great experience for omnivores but vegetarians and vegans alike.  And even though they have plenty of funky desserts to choose from, their homemade tiramisu is simply the best I've had.  You can get your gift certificates at the restaurant.  29-17 23rd Avenue, Astoria.  718.777.9477

3.  Mojave - This delicious Southwestern restaurant is accessible in location and the food offers bright and versatile flavors.  Whether you like mild or spicy, Mojave's menu delivers something for every palate.  I highly recommend it for cold winter days/nights, especially their mouthwatering, warm MotherRoad Roadhouse Chili (pictured above), any of their lunch sandwiches (especially the grilled mojo chicken club and the Atlantic Salmon sandwich) and the Mexican chocolate fondue for dessert.  Gift certificates are available at the location.  22-36 31st Street, Astoria. 718.545.4100

4.  Winegasm - Want to give the gift of amazing and carefully-selected wine, paired with sophisticated food for a truly out-of-body experience? I know...sounds a bit over the top, but it's true. Winegasm rocks and I totally dig their relaxed, intelligent atmosphere, with long communal tables, a candle-lit setting and staff that is completely, utterly passionate about wine.  This would be a great gift for your favorite oenophile-foodie.  31-86 37th Street, Astoria. 718.932.3331

5.  BareBurger - For that eco-conscious giftee, an organic, grass-fed BareBurger is a must.  Offering up to seven types of humanely-raised protein including beef, chicken, turkey, elk, bison, lamb and ostrich, you can sink your teeth into the most interesting hamburger you've ever had.  Their sides are especially tasty, such as the gourmet battered onion rings, which come with three dipping sauces including peppercorn steak sauce, curry ketchup and BareBurger's special house sauce.  Gift certificates are available at the location.  33-21 31st Avenue, Astoria. 718.777.7011

Happy gifting (and eating) Astoria!

Thanksgiving in Astoria - Happy Happy!

Thanksgiving is almost here.  Whether if you go out for a pre Thanksgiving dinner or drinks, a Thanksgiving multi-course meal or treat your family and friends to a delicious holiday pie, here's a list of 10 options that'll help you celebrate this holiday in the way of your choosing.

Vesta
- Open and serving their delectable, farm-to-table food, Vesta is a great place to check out if you want a Thanksgiving a-la-carte menu.  From roasted butternut, acorn, pumpkin soup to their own version of a turkey dinner, Vesta always has something delicious in store.  21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11102.  718.545.5550

Ornella
- This gem of a restaurant will remain open on Thanksgiving and they'll keep it authentic with a turkey on the menu.  However if you're in the mood for excellent, homemade pasta, you won't find a shortage of it here.  29-17 23rd Avenue, Astoria NY 11105.  718.777.9477

Ovelia - Although they'll be closed on Thanksgiving, they're raising Rock n' Ribs Wednesday to the next level, featuring three big DJs who all got their break by spinning at Ovelia.  Plus they're putting buffalo fried calamari back on the menu. YUM! 34-01 30th Ave, Astoria, NY 11103.  718.721.7217

L'Artiste Restaurant - My new favorite French restaurant in the nabe will be serving dinner on Thanksgiving - and similarly to Vesta, it'll be a la carte.  There's no special menu that day, so you'll get to pick from classic French bistro dishes such as roast chicken cordon bleu, seared duck breast, classic profiteroles and much more.  42-20 31st Avenue, Astoria NY 11103.  646.309.7504

Studio Square
- In their life-of-the-party fashion, Studio Square will be featuring a Thanksgiving Eve party on Wednesday night starting at 3p.m..  You won't have to worry about a cover, and drinks specials will be going on all night.  35-33 36th Street, Astoria NY 11106.  718.383.1001

Martha's Country Bakery
- If you're celebrating Thanksgiving with friends and family and want to bring over a great pie, try Martha's.  They have many seasonal flavors including, apple, pumpkin, pecan, cranberry-walnut and also other fruit varieties such as cherry, blueberry and more.  Costing about $12 - $14, they don't come cheap but they sure will satisfy.  36-21 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105.  718.545.9737

La Guli Pastry Shop
- Another yummy place to get a homemade pie, their flavors are plentiful including apple, sweet potato, coconut custard, pumpkin, and even a "green pie" that's made of whole-wheat dough.  Pies range between $10 - $14.50.  29-15 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105.  718.728.5612

Mojave
- This Southwestern eatery is boasting a special three-course Thanksgiving menu including complimentary drinks such as a margarita, sangrita, wine, champagne, beer or a mojito.  It'll set you back $34.95 per person and I think you'll be happy with your choice.  22-36 31st Street, Astoria, NY 11105.  718.545.4100

Locale
- Featuring a Turkey Feast, which is ultimately a prix-fixe Thanksgiving menu, you can check out Locale for a nice and casual dinner.  Some of the dishes you can find include squash soup, prime rib, a fall apple cobbler and more.  $39 per person.  33-02 34th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11106.  718.729.9080

Seva
- For something a bit untraditional, check out Seva for an Indian-style Thanksgiving.  They'll have their regular menu, which is always excellent - the lamb curry is especially amazing, and if you're a veggie, their samosas shouldn't be missed.  30-07 34th Street, Astoria NY 11103.  718.626.4440

Vesta's Warm Bankie is More than Bank for Your Buck

It's been quite a while since I've been to Vesta for brunch and last weekend's CSA pick up gave me the opportunity to do just that.  It was a good excuse to have some comforting and locally sourced goodies, provided by no other than the Brooklyn Grange, which is partnering with Vesta for the aforementioned CSA.

After speaking with Farmer Ben and settling up with our veggies, my mom and I headed inside to enjoy a lovely brunch.

The Warm Bankie - Since I've heard nothing but passionate raves about this dish from Meg, I just had to try it.  And after all, the fact that it incorporated truffle oil just sold me immediately.

This dish was simply awesome (I know...not very eloquently said but words just don't do this breakfast of champions justice).  It consisted of delicate fried eggs on a luxuriously silky bed of polenta that was flavored with truffle oil.  Garnished with earthy mushrooms and asparagus, the Bankie was pure decadence (and sustenance) from start to finish.  And it reminded me of reBar's polenta egg dish, which was also out of this world.

Farmer Ben's Seasonal Salad - My mom already had breakfast so she was more in the mood for lunch food and went with this fresh salad with mixed greens, radishes, walnuts (instead of crispy bacon) and a light blue cheese dressing.  I say light because it wasn't doused on heavily, creating thick globules. Instead it was just the perfect amount, with a thin coating around the veggies that gave them a delicious, tangy flavor.

Breakfast Potatoes - We received a side of well done, crispy breakfast potatoes (sort of like hash browns) with fresh parsley on top.  They were pretty awesome and a nice way to supplement both of our dishes. Even though I didn't need them with my Bankie, I still dipped these crispy spuds into the creamy truffled polenta.  Let me tell you...it was gooood.

Brunch Cocktails - Although I don't remember the names of our brunch cocktails, they were pretty stellar. I had an OJ, prosecco and mint concoction that was oh so cool and refreshing.  Once I muddled the mint with my straw, its flavor intensified more, producing a pungently delicious combination.

My mom had a fizzy, cranberry cocktail with lime that seemed to be our server's special creation. That too was excellent and I slightly preferred it to mine (but only before I muddled the mint).

Service and Cost:
Our server, David was fantastic - very attentive and on point.  He made sure that we were happy with our dishes and even asked if we needed any adjustments. Everything was great and because it wasn't too crowded, we felt relaxed and happy to linger around and chat.

Costs are gentle on your wallet and include the following:

Brunch entrees: $6 - $14
Pizza: $12 - $14

Entree salads & pasta: $9 - $15
Sides $3 - $4

Relishing in Fresh Veggies from the Brooklyn Grange

A couple of weeks back, I mentioned a new CSA that was coming to Astoria, which is a collaboration between Vesta and The Brooklyn Grange Farm.  The offer sounded so enticing, that I decided to join so I can enjoy the fruits (or should I say veggies) of the farm's labor.

I went over to Vesta on Saturday during lunch-time, as the CSA pick-up hours are between 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.  It was exciting to see that a colorful vegetable stand took over the outside of the restaurant, where you could not only pick up your CSA veggies, but also buy them on the spot if you're not a CSA member.

They had several varieties of fresh, seasonal produce such as gorgeous purple radishes, little bulbous carrots that were perfect for a single bite, deep-crimson beets, zucchini blossoms (awesome for stuffing and/or frying), fresh lettuce, kale and so much more.  Farmer Ben Flanner was on-hand to help out and answer any questions from customers.  He's extremely knowledgeable about produce, as he oversees the entire Brooklyn Grange operation along with his partners.

The farm-stand was quite busy throughout the day, and as I received my leafy, colorful goods, I couldn't wait to get home and make a fresh salad. I went right to it and this is what I came up with:

Foodista's Brooklyn Grange Salad:

Ingredients (serves 2)
2 very generous handfuls of mixed lettuce leaves
2 bulbous carrots, chopped into 1/2 inch pieces

2 heirloom tomatoes, chopped into 1/2 inch sections
2 large purple radishes, chopped into 1/2 inch pieces
A small bunch of basil, chopped (or ripped)
3 pieces of Milanese salami, rolled up and julienned into 1 inch pieces (optional)

Directions:
Toss all ingredients gently in a large salad bowl.  Dress with my signature dressing.

I can't wait to see what the next CSA delivery brings - I'll surely report back with more tales of veggies and a recipe too.

Check out the Brooklyn Grange farm stand at Vesta on Saturdays from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Happy Father's Day Astoria

Picture of my dad - we call him "Oci" (Slovak word for dad).

Father's Day is just around the corner, this Sunday, June 20th.  If you're still wondering what to do for it, here are 10 helpful suggestions that should certainly whet Dad's appetite.  While most restaurants aren't having any specials or prix-fixes, I think that's a good thing.

5 Napkin Burger - What better place to take Dad than for a hearty, juicy burger at this newly opened joint.  I highly recommend their signature "5 Napkin" burger with caramelized onions and melted Gruyere cheese.  They open at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.  35-01 36th Street, Astoria. 718.433.2727

Ornella
- If Dad is a pasta man, you have to take him to this intimate Italian eatery, boasting traditional and innovative pasta.  My favorite is the imbustata, which is a pasta "envelope" stuffed with roasted veal, chicken and wild mushrooms.  The homemade ricotta cheesecake is an absolute must.  29-17 23rd Avenue, Astoria.  718.777.9477

Zenon Taverna
- Zenon provides the ultimate family atmosphere with homemade Cypriot dishes such as pasticchio, keftedes (meatballs), loukaniko (sausage), grilled halloumi cheese and so much more.  For $18.95 - $22.95 per person, you can get a whole 12-16 course mezedes tasting. No...I'm not kidding! 34-10 31st Avenue, Astoria.  718.956.0133

Christos Steakhouse - Want to treat Dad to a nice steak dinner with an unpretentious vibe? Christos has that and much more. The steak speaks for itself and the appetizers and sides have a Greek twist, such as the Greek spreads, saganaki cheese, loukaniko (Greek sausage) and more. 41-08 23rd Avenue, Astoria. 718.777.8400

BareBurger - Another delicious burger place, this one is all organic and serves amazing organic beer at affordable prices.  Try the Big Blue Bacon Mushroom Onion Burger and the crispiest onion rings in all of Astoria.  33-21 31st Avenue, Astoria.  718.777.7011

Taverna Kyclades - If you're a family that loves Greek food, you can't miss this place.  Even though they don't take reservations, I'd suggest getting there at an off-peak time (around 4 or 4:30 p.m.) to get a prime table.  Enjoy any of the grilled seafood such as the calamari or shrimp, and don't forget to get a slew of apps too.  33-07 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria.  718.545.8666

Akti
- Akti is never a miss and it's a close second for me (right after Kyclades) for Greek food.  Dads will love the plethora of grilled Greek meat and seafood as well as a selection of fresh salads and really amazing Greek cheese. Prices are affordable.  34-19 30th Avenue, Astoria.  718.721.3530

Lucas Steakhouse
- While a definite splurge, modern Dads will love this chic steakhouse with stylish furnishings and all your favorite steakhouse classics.  They boast a 28 days dry-aged steak, which comes served with their house steak sauce.  34-55 32nd Street, Astoria. 718.786.5200

Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden
- Beer-enthusiast Dads will love the laid-back atmosphere of this outdoor space.  It's probably going to be a lot more crowded than usual because of the World Cup, but if you get there early enough, you'll get a good spot.  Besides the beer, enjoy authentic Slovak and Czech cuisine.  29-19 24th Avenue, Astoria.  718.274.4925

Trattoria L'Incontro
- I couldn't believe it, but for once on a special occasion, L'Incontro is not having a prix-fixe.  Dads will love their extensive daily specials including homemade pasta, a variety of antipasti, brick oven pizza, fresh seafood and more. 21-76 31st Street, Astoria.  718.721.3532

Fatty's
- If you're looking to have a very low key Father's Day, Fatty's is a nice choice.  You can munch on a casual meal with Dad in their outdoor garden over beers, burgers, burritos and empanadas.  25-01 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria.  718.267.7071

Vesta
- Take Dad to this delicious, intimate eatery serving the freshest ingredients sourced from a nearby rooftop farm.  I recommend any of their salads - they're absolutely wonderful and so vibrant.  The pizza and the fresh pasta is excellent too. 21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria.  718.545.5550

Where to Eat on Easter Sunday in Astoria

Easter is this Sunday and from what's been predicted, the weather will be awesome.  Warm and sunny and simply a perfect day to enjoy some time with close family and friends.  If you're not planning a home cooked meal, there are plenty of restaurant options to enjoy.  Some restaurants are planning special menus and prix-fixes while others are keeping it casual with regular menus.

Bistro Les Minots
- This intimate French bistro will be having an Easter prix-fixe but I can assure you, it's affordable.  For $29.95 per person, you'll get a three-course French meal with choices such as a Provencale tarte, roasted leg of lamb, a classic strawberry chantilly and more.  47-16 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11103.  718.606.2535

718 Restaurant - Another Frenchie spot, this one isn't changing a thing for Easter, and I don't think they need to.  You can enjoy their delicious brunch, which includes a three-course prix-fixe with a cocktail for $22.  While it may seem like a lot for brunch, it's well worth it and especially for this festive holiday.  35-01 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.204.5553

Da Franco
- This traditional Italian eatery will also skip a formal prix-fixe and instead will offer a couple of daily specials which will include fish, meat and pasta. I highly recommend asking for their blistery focaccia bread, or if you like sweet things, ask them to put nutella on it - it makes the most wonderful dessert. 23-92 21st Street, Astoria NY 11105. 718.267.0010

El Ay Si
- A special Easter menu isn't in the works, so if you're in the mood for comfort food such as jalapeno corn fritters, black-eyed pea cakes, fried chicken and such, you've come to the right place. Although there's no special listed now, they often pop up on their Facebook page on the day of, so check back for updates. 47-38 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City NY 11101. 718.389.8781

Ornella
- Masters of homemade food with soul, Ornella will be skipping the prix-fixes, concentrating on traditional Italian dishes that are popular for Easter. Whether you choose to go with a hearty lasagna or an earthy dish like lamb with rosemary, you can't go wrong. And if you want something special that you can't get anywhere else, ask about their buckwheat pasta called Pizzoccheri Della Valtellina. 29-17 23rd Avenue, Astoria NY 11105. 718.777.9477

Ovelia
- Tradition plays a big role in Ovelia's Easter offering with Magiritsa, a traditional egg lemon soup, available after midnight on Saturday. They'll remain open on Sunday and will serve Greek specialties such as Kokoretsi and roasted leg of lamb. You can get both as well as the soup for a $27 prix-fixe. Enjoy - and don't forget to ask for one of their fabulous cocktails. 34-01 30th Ave, Astoria, NY 11103. 718.721.7217

Testaccio - Long Island City's newest, modern Italian eatery delivers yummy Roman Easter classics.  The Easter menu includes delicacies such as thinly sliced roast veal, roasted leg of lamb with porcini mushrooms, roasted rabbit with black olives and much more.  Don't miss the Nutella pizza rolls for dessert - they're a must. 47-30 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City NY 11101. 718.937.2900

Trattoria L'Incontro
- One of Astoria's best known Italian restaurants, they don't mess around when it comes to special occasions.  They'll feature a generous 4-course prix-fixe for $60/person with Easter dishes such as a special Easter soup, ravioli with sweet potatoes, lamb, filet mignon, a choice of fish and various desserts of the day.  21-76 31st Street, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.721.3532

Vesta - A dear favorite of mine and of many others, Vesta will feature a special Easter menu with a mix of brunch (till 3:00 p.m.) and dinner (till 9:00 p.m.). Their Easter menu boasts some of their signature dishes such as the Hangover Pizza, Slow Braised Meatballs, Lasagna (Sunday dinner style - pictured above) as well as new dishes such as skate and borcht soup. 21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11102. 718.545.5550

Zenon Taverna
- This wonderful Greek staple isn't wasting time when it comes to celebrating Easter.  They'll be open real late on Saturday night/Sunday morning (until 3:00 a.m.) to ensure that people can enjoy a traditional Easter dinner right after religious services.  There is a prix-fixe on Saturday and it's super affordable at $20.95/person for a 4-course meal including a special treat - flaounes, a traditional Cypriot cheese pie made especially for Easter.  They'll be closed on Sunday.   34-10 31st Avenue, Astoria, NY 11106. 718.956.0133
