An Astorian Thanksgiving - It's Coming!

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so I thought I'd start to think about it early this year, seeing as I completely glossed over Halloween.  It's nice to see a lot of businesses in the nabe are planning early, and all the themed menus and fun offers are getting me excited.  Here's a few to get you started.

Koliba - Even though it's probably not the first place you think of for a Thanksgiving meal, I expect that it'd be delicious.  Their Thanksgiving menu includes traditional things such as turkey with all the fixins, but they also have Slovak/Czech style dishes on the menu.  You'll find this dinner to be a prix-fixe, ranging from $15.75 - $24.75.  31-11 23rd Avenue, Astoria.  718.626.0430

Cavo - I like visiting Cavo on special occasions, since it feels kind of celebratory and a little fancy, too.  Taking a peek at their Thanksgiving menu, I spied yummy things such as roasted butternut squash soup, oven roasted free range turkey, brussels sprouts, chestnut cranberry stuffing and more.  42-18 31st Avenue, Astoria.  718.721.1001

Astor Bake Shop - Everyone knows that ABS is totally worth its salt when it comes to dessert.  They've been baking up a storm with seasonal treats and are taking pre-orders for Thanksgiving seasonal pies.  This rustic apple beauty certainly caught my eye.  12-23 Astoria Blvd, Astoria.  718.606.8439

Vesta - These guys always do a great job of hooking you up for Thanksgiving, whether you choose to dine in or take out.  I found the take out option pretty cool, as they feature an entire Thanksgiving feast to-go (including their signature, Baby Jesus Cake) for 8-10 people.  Find out what Thanksgiving Foods are included here.  21-20 30th Avenue, Astoria.
 718.545.5550

John Brown Smokehouse - Further on the topic of a take-home Thanksgiving feast, how about something with a smoky, bbq twist? JBS has a few tasty options for you, including a whole pecan smoked turkey with sides and a special order of pecan or pumpkin pies.  Prices vary based on how many mouths you want to feed.  Email them directly to find out more and to place your order.  10-43 44th Drive, LIC.  347.617.1120

Tis the season for oysters, and I do love me some fresh bivalves.  Excited to see that Cavo's Tuesday night ladies offering has now been replaced with an oyster special, I wanted to call it out here.  If you're free tonight and want to check it out, it looks really inviting.  Here's the deal:

Cavo's Tuesday Oyster Special (every Tuesday)
East Coast Oysters - $1 all evening

All oyster platters are served with champagne mignonette sauce, lemon and lime segments and cocktail sauce. Cheers!

S Prime - There's a New Steakhouse in Town

The opening of this new "boutique steakhouse" has recently been brought to my attention by Meg, who scoped it out while walking around the nabe.  There's been a lot of chatter about it in the last week or so, and now we can all see what it's about, as it's officially open.

Run by the folks that also own Studio Square (notice its close proximity to the beer garden) as well Cavo, S Prime looks to be a lush, high-class, high-priced-ticket joint, fit for special occasions.  I personally really enjoy a good steakhouse and am willing and excited to check it out.  In the meantime, here's a peek at a few items on their menu.  Mind you this is definitely a treat for the wallet, but hopefully a worthy one.

Happy Father's Day Round-Up

Just a friendly reminder that Father's Day is this Sunday!  I'm personally very excited, not only to celebrate with my Dad (pictured above) but also with my 91 year old grandfather, who is visiting from Slovakia.  I can't wait to spend the day with both of these role models in my life, and I hope you take the time to honor the special men in your life as well.  In honor of the big day, I wanted to provide you with a few suggestions for treating your Dad, Grandad, Uncle, Brother, or whoever you choose in the right way.

Cavo
- This is a pretty awesome deal, as Dads eat FREE on Father's Day.  The way it works is that Dad receives a free combo entree, which includes a 10 oz. hangar steak with lemon shrimp scampi, served with steak fries and a charred tomato.  You must have at least four persons in your party to take advantage of this deal, and reservations are strongly encouraged.  42-18 31st Avenue, Astoria.  718.721.1001

Thymari - The still newish Greek food joint on 34th Avenue and 32 Street (old Philoxenia space) will be serving their dinner menu all day on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.  Special to this day in particular - Dad can also get a Kreas Pikilia (meat platter) with pork, country sausage, chicken and beef sliders.  Manly plate, I must say...and a complimentary beer for Dad with dinner also comes with the deal.  32-07 34th Avenue, Astoria.  718.204.2880

Christos Steakhouse
- I usually recommend this for a Father's Day treat, as it's absolutely wonderful for a special occasion, and there's no way to go wrong here.  You can treat Dad to a classic Porterhouse or Ribeye and a plethora of mouth-watering sides such as smoked feta mashed potatoes, cream spinach, lobster mashed potatoes (with huge lobster chunks) and their signature dessert, Baked Astoria.  41-08 23rd Avenue, Astoria.  718.777.8400

Bear - If Dad is more adventurous and curious to taste some inventive eats, I suggest a visit to Bear, who feature a Sunday supper
(it starts at 5 p.m.), right after their Sunday brunch which you can also take advantage of that day.  If you join for dinner, you can expect rich, delicious delicacies, that are seasonally appropriate, such as a New England Clam Bake, a slow-roasted Long Island Duck, pork ribs in a house cherry-plum BBQ sauce and more!  12-14 31st Avenue, Astoria.  917.396.4939

Sac's Place - If Dad is more of a traditionalist, Sac's is a great choice for some classic red-sauce Italian food. They excel in coal oven pizza, which comes in six different styles, including a Mama's old fashioned pie.  Pasta staples such as Manicotti, six types of ravioli, two types of gnocchi and plenty of meat dishes are also a sure way to satisfy Dad.  Reservations are recommended, as Sac's gets busy.  25-41 Broadway, Astoria.  718.204.8724

Cavo's Oyster Mania

Something fun that's currently going on at Cavo is its oyster special that I'd like to highlight here.  While sometimes I get a little turned off by their "Ladies Eat Free" Thursday night special, I think the oyster thing is definitely a bit more up my alley - and I hope yours too.  Enjoying the food at Cavo pretty consistently, I have high hopes for their new oyster nights, which take place every Tuesday and Wednesday night, all night.  Here's the deal:

Every Tuesday/Wednesday, $1 oysters all evening

A similar deal is also applicable on Saturdays when from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. you can also get $1 oysters and enjoy them in the comfort of Cavo's famous outdoor garden (pictured above).  While kicking your oysters back, you can also indulge in their stiff specialty cocktails or even their lovely Greek wine.  Have fun with this fabulous special.

10 New Year's Eve Options in Astoria and LIC

With Saturday's New Year's Eve plans soon approaching, you may still be figuring out just what to do. Are you up for a fancy dinner and drinks at a hot spot or would you rather chill out at a small cozy resto and end the night with a glass of champagne at home?  It's up to you of course, but I wanted to provide you with options to make that decision.

Studio Square - If you're looking for something fun and boisterous to do with a large group of friends, Studio Square may be just right for you.  Their party will start at 8 p.m. with a live DJ, complimentary party favors,
and lots of drinks options.  With only a $15 cover, it's affordable and promises to be a lively time.  35-33 36th Street, LIC.  718.383.1001

LIC Market - Extending their fabulous supper club concept to New Year's Eve, LIC Market will host two dinner seatings, one at 6 p.m. and the other at 9 p.m.  The latter is the more lavish and pricier option, with a 6-course tasting and a glass of sparkling wine.  Cheers to that!  21-52 44th Drive, LIC.  718.361.0013

Seva - The deals at Seva never cease to impress me, and especially when you consider the high quality of their food.  For New Year's Eve, they're offering a 3-course dinner special for just $20.12 per person.  You can choose from all your regular favorites such as samosas, chicken, shrimp, lamb dishes, and more.  Considering that this deal is extended until New Year's Day, even if you don't end up here that night, you can still enjoy the great value the day after.  30-07 34th Street, Astoria.  718.626.4440

DiWine - It's guaranteed to be a partay at DiWine for New Year's, as they'll be offering a 4 hour open bar, a live DJ, party favors and more for $65/person.  Stay until midnight of course and receive a free glass of champagne and hors d'oeuvres.  I also noticed they're throwing in an incentive for dinner, as diners will receive a $10 off the open bar option.  Eat and drink up!  41-15 31st Avenue, Astoria.  718.777.1355

Bistro 33 - Enjoy New Year's Eve in this intimate, casual venue with a special 3-course dinner that starts at 10:30 p.m. and includes a champagne toast and party favors.  You can also come by earlier and choose anything off their a la carte menu.  You can read all about the special menu items here, which include yummies such as steamed mussels, a duck duo, fluffer nutter dessert and more.  19-33 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria.  718.721.1933

Cavo - Cavo's New Year's Eve event is always a big production and this year is no different. Whether you choose to come by for their Mediterranean feast between 7 and 8:45 p.m. or their after party, which starts at 9 p.m., it's guaranteed to be a night of excitement, dancing and fun.  42-18 31st Avenue, Astoria.  718.721.1001

Bear -  Although still a newcomer, Bear is certainly making a name for itself with its sophisticated menu and plentiful vodka offering.  For New Year's Eve, they'll be featuring a 3-course menu and a glass of champagne for $65/person.  The menu is tantalizing, with items such as roasted rabbit fettuccine, a three-shot vodka special, roasted duck with apples and more.  See the entire New Year's Eve menu here.  12-14 31st Avenue, Astoria.  917.396.4939

Vesta - Always promising a great time, this wonderfully local restaurant is hosting a "Blast from the Past" decades party.  Guests are encouraged to come in costume from their favorite era, and enjoy a gorgeous 4-course dinner.  As usual, there will be 3 seatings, with the last one also including complimentary party favors, a session with a tarot card reader and a midnight toast.  21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria.  718.545.5550

Veslo - Stretching out the celebration throughout the night, Veslo's New Year's Eve will start with a 5-course dinner with a top shelf open bar, and then extend to a big after party, starting at 12:30 a.m. Dinner reservations are highly encouraged and comfortable shoes are also a plus, as you'll want to dance your hiney off.  32-11 Broadway, Astoria. 718.728.0549

El Ay Si - Another great place to keep the celebration local is El Ay Si where you'll be able to enjoy their regular dinner service as well as other food and drinks specials.  A DJ will be spinning and the good news is that there is no minimum charge per person - a great choice that won't break the bank.  47-38 Vernon Blvd, LIC.  718.389.8781

Waltz Astoria - In true Waltz fashion, Saturday night will bring a Halloween Social, which starts at 7 p.m.  You'll indulge in plenty of live music, hors d'oeuvres, a buffet and more.  There's an initial cover of $12 but after that the food and music is free.  Drinks are separate.  Enjoy, and don't forget to wear a costume.  23-14 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria.  718.95.MUSIC

Hellgate Social - A favorite spot for Halloween, this year they're stepping it up with a "Lost in Space" theme Halloween party, full on with aliens and other extra terrestrial embellishments, including themed drinks.  There's no cover and costumes are a must.  Walk in anytime after 6 p.m. and stay as long as you'd like.  12-21 Astoria Blvd, Astoria.  718.204.8313

Happy Father's Day Astoria - Father's Day Resto Roundup

Happy Father's day to all the great dads out there, including my very special Oci.  That's what we call Dad in Slovak and my American friends find the word intriguing and endearing.  Just like the man himself, pictured above.  In honor of Father's Day, I bring you this resto round-up, and while you'll see that most places are doing business as usual, they still provide a wonderful atmosphere for Dad and the whole fam.

Mojave - Fun times are sure to be had at this Southwestern eatery.  In honor of Father's Day, they'll have a BBQ and an open bar on their patio and even free shots of tequila for Dad. Salud!  22-36 31st Street Astoria NY 11105.  718.545.4100

Cavo - This upscale Greek resto will feature their regular menu for Father's Day but Dads gets pampered with 1/2 priced entrees, so order something expensive.  You can also enjoy $20 pitchers of sangria, which is customary for Sundays.  42-18 31st Avenue, Astoria NY 11103.  718.721.1001

eXo
- You won't want to miss eXo's Trapezi night, which features a whole lamb on a spit, roasted beef, Greek pork shoulder and plenty of sides and meze to go with it.  The whole feast will only set you back $35/person and Dad gets some cold ones on the house!  15-16 149th Street, Whitestone NY 11357.  718.767.4396

Christos Steakhouse
- If Christos isn't the epitome of manly cuisine then I don't know what is.  Take Dad to this staple Greek steakhouse for a gorgeous steak, lobster and classic steakhouse sides with a Greek spin.  They'll have a couple of daily specials for Dad but the menu is staying as is.  41-08 23rd Avenue, Astoria, NY 11105.  718.777.8400

Bistro 33
- Check out this neighborhood favorite for Father's Day, and especially now as it's fresh from being renovated.  As many of you may know, the previously known Side Door ice cream parlor has now been renamed Side Door Sushi and is serving just that.  19-33 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria NY 11105.  718.721.1933

BareBurger - Who wouldn't want to sink their teeth into a juicy, organic burger that comes in 14 different varieties?!  Dad can mix and match his protein with the various fixins and can choose from traditional beef to a more exotic ostrich or bison patty.  33-21 31st Avenue, Astoria NY 11106.  718.777.7011

Zenon Taverna
- If your Dad loves homemade, delectable Greek food, you can't miss Zenon.  My favorite thing to get here is the 16 course meze tasting menu for just $19.95.  Yes...it's true, and yes...it's very delicious and filling.  34-10 31st Avenue, Astoria, NY 11106.  718.956.0133

Vesta
- With their menu always being fresh and seasonal, there's nothing not to love here.  From pizza, pasta, steak, fish, pork and lots of great veggie options, Dad will surely love breaking bread at this local eatery.  They have plenty of wonderfully chosen wines on the menu too so don't forget to order a glass or a bottle.  21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11102.  718.545.5550

Ornella
- Here's an idea for you...celebrate with Dad on Monday and take advantage of Ornella's steak night where all steak dishes (6 varieties in total!) are only $14.99.  This is a great opportunity to treat Dad, while not breaking the wallet either.  And while you're there, don't miss my absolute favorite dish - the duck meatballs! 29-17 23rd Avenue, Astoria NY 11105.  718.777.9477

Exciting Summer Specials at Cavo

It's been a while since I've visited the fancy schmancy Cavo, which I happen to like but I know some Astorians are bothered by.  All the pageantry aside, I truly enjoy the open space of this beautifully designed interior and the piece-de-resistance open garden, which is what Cavo is known for.

Recently becoming aware of some fun summer specials they're featuring, I'm getting my hiney back in there, and pronto.

Here's what you can expect each week:

Tuesdays - 1/2 price on all entrees, excluding specials
Wednesdays - 50% of the manager's wine list
Thursdays - Ladies night with $4 martinis and sangrias
Sundays - Sangria Sundays with $20 pitchers

I especially like the Tuesday offering and plan to indulge soon.  Will you?

Happy Mother's Day Astoria

Wow this week is busy with two big special occasions happening so close to each other - yesterday's Cinco de Mayo and of course Mother's Day, which is this Sunday.  Below are 10 fun suggestions for Mother's Day in Astoria and Long Island City.  I hope whichever route you take, you treat Mom to something nice and make her feel special.

Ovelia -
Although they're completely booked for brunch, dinner reservations are still available.  There's no Mother's Day menu, but they are serving their Sunday Night 3-course prix-fixe for $25.  That's a great deal on a regular night, but especially for Mother's Day when a lot of restaurants jack up their prices. 34-01 30th Ave, Astoria. 718.721.7217

Bistro Les Minots - This quaint little French bistro is also doing an affordable $29.95 prix-fixe menu for Mother's Day with a 3-course French meal and even a complimentary glass of sangria.  The offer runs from noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday.  47-16 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11103. 718.606.2535

Seva - My all-time favorite Indian restaurant in Astoria, they'll be doing business as usual on Mother's Day.  Because it's so intimate and often-times busy, I suggest you make a reservation.  My favorite dishes here are the apricot lamb curry as well as the chicken Korma.  And definitely get the naan! 30-07 34th Street, Astoria. 718.626.4440

718 - I love going to 718 for Mother's day and took my mom there two years ago.  She loved the clean, modern atmosphere and enjoyed her tarte flambee very much.  This year for Mother's Day, they'll serve brunch as usual and for dinner they're featuring a lamb special. Everything can be ordered a la carte, which is great. 35-01 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.204.5553

Akti - If you're in the mood for wonderfully fresh Greek food, give Akti a try.  They'll be serving their regular menu, which is fabulous for Greek meze and fresh fish.  I highly recommend the dip platter and the zucchini croquettes. 34-19 30th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11103. 718.721.3530

BareBurger
- In addition to being a big fan of their burgers, I've recently discovered their amazing brunch and highly recommend it for Mother's Day.  The menu will remain the same and so will the prices.  If you want to indulge, I urge you to try their organic omelette with Danish blue cheese, applewood bacon and caramelized onions. Mother's Day in Astoria

Mother's Day is this Sunday and there's never a lack of activity in Astoria. Below you'll find interesting restaurant specials and suggestions for a Mother's Day lunch, dinner or brunch.

Prix-Fixe Specials:

Seva - Although this isn't a Mother's Day prix-fixe per se, I'd recommend a visit here for either lunch or dinner. They offer a $12 three-course dinner and a $7 two-course brunch. The portions are generous, the food is delicious and it's a BYOB so you could bring your own wine.
30-07 34th street, Astoria, NY 11103. 718.626.4440

Bistro Les Minots - Their $29.95/person all-day Mother's Day special will feature classic French dishes such as escargots, braised short ribs, an apple tart and the like. Brunch will be offered between 11am - 4:30pm, showcasing their regular menu. 47-16 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11103. 718.606.2535

Ovelia - Promising a modern Greek experience, Ovelia's $28/person three-course prix-fixe is packed with flavorful dishes such as homemade Greek sausage, fresh seafood, a leg of lamb among others. 34-01 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11103. 718.721.7217

Zenon Taverna
- Both a prix-fixe (price is still being decided) and the regular menu will be available. I prefer their keftedes or Cypriot meatballs that are full of flavor and spice. The hospitality is wonderful--it's very much a family oriented place. 34-10 31st Avenue, Astoria, NY 11106. 718.956.0133

Cavo - An upscale Mother's Day at this Greek eatery includes a $54/per person four-course meal, complete with a tuna roll sampling, salad, a variety of entrees and dessert. Click here for the Mother's Day menu. Valet parking is complimentary and seating starts at 1pm. 42-18 31st Ave, Astoria, NY 11103. 718.721.1001

Trattoria L'Incontro - Although this place is all booked up for Mother's Day, if you want it bad enough, you can call to see if they get cancellations between now and Sunday. The offering is a $60 four-course prix-fixe. Another splurge but the food is fantastic! 21-76 31st Street, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.721.3532

Specials but no Prix-Fixe:

Vesta - A great place to bring Mom, Vesta has a cozy, unpretentious vibe. Brunch will be available from 11am - 4pm and dinner will start at 5pm and go until 10pm. Special dishes added to the menu include charred calamari, orecchiette with asparagus ragu and double lump-blue crab cakes. 21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.545.5550

Mundo - They'll have a couple of daily specials, one of which includes grilled shrimp but aside from that, their menu will remain unchanged. Good thing too because they already offer so many goodies such as empanadas, red sonjas and Ottoman dumplings. 31-18 Broadway #E, Astoria. 718.777.2829

718 - Serving dinner dishes all day long, the daily specials encompass a variety of grilled plates such as calamari, a rack of lamb, sea scallops--and the only non-grilled specials offering is the chocolate tartlet. Personally, I love their tarte flambees--try those! 35-01 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.204.5553

Il Bambino - Want to bring Mom to an Astoria gem? Try Il Bambino where they'll have a couple of panini, crostini and salad specials for Mother's Day. Besides that, their fabulous menu of crunchy paninis and small plates remains the same. 34-08 31st Avenue, Astoria, NY 11106. 718.626.0087

Business as Usual but Still Noteworthy:

Akti - The fresh seafood here is always impressive and they have a delectable meze selection. It's been open for about a year and has gotten very popular. They're almost booked up for Mother's Day but have a couple of open reservations (7:30pm, 8:00pm) so call soon if you're interested. 34-19 30th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11103. 718.721.3530

Agnanti - If you're looking for traditional Greek food, this is it. Halloumi, biftekia, keftedes, Agnanti has it all. They might end up with some daily specials but that hasn't been decided yet. Reservations are suggested, as Agnanti gets crowded. 19-06 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.833.7033

Piccola Venezia - An upscale Italian joint, it's on the traditional side and their fresh pasta is supposed to be superb. The signature menu will stay the same for Mother's Day and there will be three main seatings -- 1:00pm, 3:30pm and 6:30pm. 42-01 28th Avenue, Astoria NY 11103. 718.721.8470
