Beer Week is Here - Cheers to that!

One of my very favorite neighborhood food events is back this year, which is Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden's Pork Fest.  Taking place around this time of year, the staff at the Beer Garden create an entire menu, consisting of delicious pork delicacies that originate from the Czech Republic and Slovakia (my mother country!)

I promise you'll fulfill your heart's desire with amazing pork specialties such as pork and dumplings, pork goulash, fried pork cutlet and more!

This tasty pig feast takes place all weekend, starting this Friday at 5 p.m. and goes til Sunday evening at 10 p.m.

Last Minute Cinco de Mayo Roundup

Since it's Cinco de Mayo tomorrow, and lucky for us it falls on a Sunday, there's no excuse to not celebrate.  It's a huge weekend in general actually, with the Kentucky Derby and Greek Easter happening as well, so whatever you're celebrating, here are some festive suggestions.

5 Burro Cafe - Recently having the pleasure of trying this dive cafe in Forest Hills, it's a total must, if not tomorrow, just anytime.  Although the space is small and there's often a bit of a wait, the no frills, delightful Mexican food is totally worth it.  The guacamole with chunky red peppers serves as a yummy beginning, while the tacos Al Pastor send you right to heaven with tender marinated pork with a spicy pineapple salsa.  72-05 Austin Street, Forest Hills.  718.544.2984

Oktoberfest is Here!

There's nothing like celebrating Oktoberfest in Munich, like I did last year, but even here in our neck of the woods, it's still a lot of fun and a big deal.  You can bring your friends and stay out all weekend, enjoying cold ones and eating some hearty, delicious food.  Here are three great places that'll give it to you:

Eurocup Action in Astoria

With the Eurocup 2012 in full swing right now, everyone is catching a part of the action, and Astoria is delivering a fabulous atmosphere to watch the games.  Many of the bars in the nabe are showcasing the daily matches, some of them running great gametime specials.  Here's a small sampling of the venues where you can enjoy some futbal!

Avenue Cafe - Also on the 30th Avenue strip, where a lot of soccer can be seen, Avenue is certainly the place to go if you're comfortable with a lot of testosterone.  And I mean a lot.  Most of the clientele consists of guys and they're pretty avid futbal fans, so you'll find good company here.  Enjoy the games with an ice cold frappe and a sweet fresh-made crepe with fruit or other inventive fillings such as biscotti.  35-27 30th Avenue, Astoria.  718.278.6967

Cinco de Mayo Mini Roundup

Before the big Cinco de Mayo fiesta this Saturday, I wanted to make sure you have at least a couple of fun suggestions to consider before going out that day (or evening!)  Being that it's on a weekend, people will be out and about all day, and you can certainly hop around and try a few different things.

Mojave - For something authentic and festive, pop over to Mojave starting at 6 p.m. and enjoy a live mariachi band, the Mamboblue Trio.  As is customary, they'll also be featuring a tequila tasting all night, and will of course have their signature margaritas and sangria available as you please.  22-36 31st Street, Astoria.  718.545.4100

Unlimited Sunday Brunch at The Beer Garden

Always on the hunt for a good brunch deal, I noticed a really sweet and unexpected brunch special at The Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden that I wanted to share.  Extremely popular in the warm spring and summer months, "The Beer Garden" as many of us still call it, chills out a bit during the wintertime when their outdoor garden isn't exactly the draw.  For this reason, I see they're working on a couple of interesting specials (including drinks and food deals during sporting events) but also this fabulous all-you-can-eat brunch option on Sundays.  Here goes...

Every Sunday from noon - 2 p.m. enjoy an all-you-can eat breakfast buffet for just $10.95.  What's even better is that this comes with your choice of 2 mimosas or 2 bloody Marys.  How great is that?!

Note that this special is very much seasonal, so when spring and summer arrive, expect that it may not stay put.  But in the meantime, go ahead and enjoy it!

Astoria Cinco de Mayo Mini Round-Up

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone.  What a fun excuse to go out and enjoy festive drinks, food and time with friends.  Astoria and LIC promises to be bumpin' tomorrow, and here's my mini round-up of cool happs you can partake in.

A Spooktacular Halloween in Astoria

Father's Day is just around the corner, this Sunday, June 20th.  If you're still wondering what to do for it, here are 10 helpful suggestions that should certainly whet Dad's appetite.  While most restaurants aren't having any specials or prix-fixes, I think that's a good thing.

FIFA World Cup - Best Places to Watch & Munch

What an exciting couple of weeks it's going to be between now and July 11th! I'm referring to all the FIFA World Cup soccer coverage from South Africa.  It's not only thrilling to watch and support the United States in this major sporting event, but you'll also witness people's allegiances to their home countries abroad.  Mine is Slovakia and I'm excited for them to compete. 

But part of all the fun is the atmosphere and where you choose to watch each match.  Here are a couple of my suggestions in no particular order.  Feel free to add in your own picks in the comments.

Celebrate St. Patty's Day in Astoria

Tomorrow is St. Patty's day and that always promises a fun time, especially in Astoria.  The weather is supposed to be warm and sunny, offering the perfect opportunity to hop around to different bars and take advantage of various food and drinks specials.  Here are my personal suggestions (in alphabetical order):

Astoria Brewhouse (fka Indigo) - Always partaking in festivities, Astoria Brewhouse will offer drinks specials as well as an Irish food menu with specialties such as a corned beef sandwich, shepherd's pie, Irish-style fish and chips and more.  These specials will run all day tomorrow.  28-50 31st Street, Astoria.  718.728.0050

$10 Pitchers at the Original Beer Garden

With the winter chill in the air, it's no wonder that the crowds at the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden have mellowed out.  You'll hardly recognize this place from the busy summer season, and if you enjoy a more laid back, calm atmosphere, now is the time to check it out.  

Something that might draw you in, which certainly piqued my interest is their Monday/Tuesday night special, featuring $10 pitchers of beer all night.  That's $5 off their regular priced pitchers, which is a nice deal, not to mention that you get about 4 full glasses out of it.  Check it out on a cold night and order some knedlik to soak up all that brewski.

Despite new competition from the Studio Square Beer Garden, Bohemian is still my favorite, mostly because of its Eastern European heritage and the food they serve. My cousins, brother and I went there recently and despite the rain, we had a blast. I sampled a couple of new things, spotlighting them below:

Halusky (Spaetzle) with Sauerkraut - One of my favorite Slovak dishes, I prefer to eat them with "bryndza" or sheep's milk cheese but they ran out. The sauerkraut version was just as good and the spaetzle were bite sized and quite light. They could sometimes feel too bready and heavy but that wasn't the case. Sprinkling this dish with bacon is traditional and while I liked it, it didn't stand a chance next to the thick-cut bacon at Koliba.

Classic Beef Goulash - This was Matt's choice and I'm so glad that he insisted on it. Served with knedle (bread dumplings), it was incredibly hearty and comforting. I loved how the slow-cooked beef fell apart upon contact--and it was infused with a lovely, pungent beef gravy that seeped into the bread dumplings. Unlike with the halusky, I think that this dish was better done here than in Koliba.

Fried Muenster Cheese - Bringing me back to my childhood when my dad made this for us, I simply devoured it. Sure it looked like an ordinary fried cheese block, but it so wasn't. Gooey on the inside, it had perfect consistency and was really enhanced by the side of tangy tartar sauce. If you aren't entirely brave enough to try Slovak food, get this, as it appeals to an American palate.

Service and Cost:
Notorious for bad service, the Beer Garden has turned things around. We didn't have to beg to be served and our food arrived in about 20 minutes. One thing that's slightly disappointing is that the personnel is no longer all Czech/Slovak. It was nice--and fun--to be able to speak your native tongue there but that's no longer. Oh well.

While costs go up each year, it's still a very affordable establishment, setting us back about $76 total for 5 entrees and some sides.

A Food-Coma-Inducing Porkfest

Today was a day of gluttony, laziness and indulgence otherwise known as Porkfest at the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden. Peter, Dan and I went with full intentions to eat all the pork that we could and wash it down with potent Czech beer. Our mission was accomplished and while it took a while to recuperate from our food and beer coma, we made it through. Here's a recap of this afternoon's pork extravaganza:

Pork and Barley Soup - Because it was so damp and chilly outside, we each ordered this as an appetizer to warm ourselves. It was hot, delicious and salty with plenty of tender dark and white pork meat. The soft barley was a lovely addition, as it rounded out the flavors in the soup and made it even more hearty.

Moravian Pork with Dumplings - This was my dish and I enjoyed it to the last bite. It included soft chunks of garlic-seasoned pork with slightly sweet sauerkraut and knedle or bread dumplings. The whole thing was slathered in rich pork gravy that made this dish irresistible. While Peter's pork goulash looked almost identical, I think that the garlic seasoning in mine made it slightly tastier.

Pork Goulash with Dumplings - Peter chose this as his entree and it was also delectable. The only difference between this and my Moravian pork was that the gravy in the goulash was darker and sweeter--I think that it was made with paprika.

Breaded and Fried Pork Cutlet - Put anything fried in front of Dan and he'll eat it--that's why I wasn't surprised when he ordered the pork cutlet. I think that this was my second favorite dish and the breading is what made it exceptional. It was super crispy but not at all greasy. While it came with roasted potatoes as a side dish, Dan substituted them with his beloved knedle or bread dumplings. For extra crunch and freshness, the pork cutlet was served with peppers, tomatoes and lettuce. Yum!

Apple Strudel - We each had the dessert of the day, which was homemade apple strudel. I absolutely adore apple dessert and was excited once this came out. While I liked it, it wasn't exceptional and needed more sugar or cinnamon. It was an acceptable way to end our meal but it didn't wow me.

Service and Cost:

Our server was a bit off and I think that he was new. He kept forgetting to refresh our silverware and acted strange when we asked for basic things such as more gravy or the check. Overall, the service is hit or miss so don't expect to be pampered.

Porkfest was a prix-fixe deal with $19.95 per person for a three-course meal. I'd say that it was worth it--what drove up the cost of our meal was the beer.

It's a Porkfest this Weekend - Literally!

The Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden is celebrating the other white meat this weekend. That's right, it's a pork fest both on Saturday February 21st and Sunday February 22nd.

Czechs and Slovaks are known for their rich pork dishes--think fried pork cutlets, roasted pork with sauerkraut (pictured above) or even pan broiled pork. This weekend will offer a perfect opportunity to indulge in it all for a very low price. Below you'll find the scoop about the entire offering.

You'll probably find me there, stuffing my face, looking happy as a pig (pun intended).
