The Brindle Room – The Burger Legend Lives On

Ever since we saw it on
Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, Dan and I have been dreaming of visiting the Brindle Room and trying their legendary burger. Marveling at Guy Fieri, as he devoured that juicy patty with all the fixins, we decided to make a date out of it, coming out for happy hour and staying til dinner.

Atmosphere:
Set in the heart of the East Village on 10th Street between 1st Avenue and Avenue A, The Brindle Room is surrounded by private residences and a sprinkling of quaint eateries. It’s somewhat easy to miss if you’re not looking for it, as the sign is subtle and the façade narrow.

Comfort and familiarity washes over you as you first step into The Brindle Room, feeling oddly nostalgic and automatically like a place you won’t come to just once. Dan and I situated ourselves close to the bar, so we got a little feel of the action and observed a few folks enjoying quintessential bar food eats such as burgers, beers, poutine, oysters and such. Everything looked and smelled wonderful, which assured us why we came.

Food:
Noticing a sweet deal on happy hour items such as oysters, mussels, poutine and beers, Dan and I started with a few apps before moving on to the showstopper burger.

Oysters – The $1 deal on oysters was an easy sell for us, as we ordered a half dozen and gulped them down with gusto. Not only were they large and meaty, they boasted a clean fresh-from-the-sea flavor that didn’t need much else besides a little spritz of lemon.

Moules Frites – It was also hard to resist the happy hour PEI mussels, which came topped with a rustic garlic, tomato and basil broth. While enjoying the actual mussels and their substantial interior, the Provencal sauce was the best part, especially as a vessel for those well done frites.

The Burger – To simply call this a burger wouldn’t do it justice, as it was so much more than that. I have to admit that it didn’t look impressive, the puny thin bun and a slightly charred outside making it seem pedestrian. However immediately following the first bite, we quickly understood why it was recognized as a Triple D standout.

Firstly, the juiciness of the meat is simply diabolical, as each morsel produces utter delight with the well marbled meaty flavor dissolving into your tastebuds. You quickly learn why they use the thin bun, as the meat is truly the star ingredient and the bread simply just a vehicle of transport for the meat. A heap of perfectly caramelized onions and a generous slab of slightly melted Roquefort cheese gives the burger a hint of sophistication and further accentuates its quality. Without a doubt, this is an overall win!

Donut Holes – Although we were already full, the waitress offered us a serving of complimentary orange glazed donut holes that we couldn’t refuse. Loving the idea behind this clever dessert, I appreciated the resourcefulness of the holes as well as its sweet flavor and airy texture. The orange glaze on top further sealed this already sweet deal.

Service and Cost:
Very much in line with the relaxed vibe, the service at the Brindle Room also mirrors that. Impressed with the level of knowledge that our waitress had about the menu, she was confidently able to recommend what to get and even went into specifics about some of the ingredients. Overall, everyone had a very casual feel about them, which was welcome and needed after a long day in the big city.

Costs are pretty decent considering the quality of all the food and its NYC location. The burger set us back $14, which isn’t cheap but it truly was a bomb burger, and the happy hour small plates were $5-$6 each. Our dinner came out to about $35 each including drinks, tax and tip.

Oyster Party at SingleCut Beersmiths

I love any chance I have to get out to SingleCut Beersmiths, which is usually reserved for the weekends.  Digging their live music, and the laid back communal vibe, it's never a hard sell to get a group out to enjoy it.

While they usually have a pretty limited food offering, consisting mostly of snacks such as giant warm pretzels or savory meat pies, I was excited to learn that they're offering something new this week.  Oysters!

A nice combination with their hoppy ales, oysters will be making a debut on their menu this coming Wednesday, September 25th as well as this Sunday, September 29th.  They're calling it their Oyster Party, which starts at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at at 1 p.m. on Sunday.  Wednesday's celebration is extra personal, as you can bring in a record of your choice and they'll play all your faves right on the spot.

The oysters are supplied by Crudo Sea and Land, which is a travelling oyster and raw bar.  Neat idea!  Let me know how you like it.

BEET American Bistro & Bar Does Oysters

I'm delighted to bring you another delicious piece by my colleague, John Figlesthaler, who's recently tried BEET - an UES casual eatery devoted to oysters and you guessed it, beets and veggies.  Take it away John...

BEET is a newer restaurant in an UES neighborhood where I rarely find myself, but the allure of an offer to do a review is hard to pass up. My better half and I took the annoying post work cab ride up to 84th and 2nd and were met by the welcoming owner Daryl, GM Olivier and live jazz.

Atmosphere:

The atmosphere of BEET is casual, but still refined – a low lit and romantic vibe that makes the space inviting and comfortable. The live jazz on Wednesdays and Sundays definitely knocks it up a peg in my book, something that definitely beats even the best playlists.

Food:

Oyster Sampler
- Part of the draw to BEET on this Wednesday was their oyster and jazz night. The band was already fired up so we needed oysters, and the sampler seemed like the way to go. Well Fleets and Montauk Pearls (they were out of Blue Points) appeared on their usual bed of ice, the bivalves fresh and steeped in brine. Unfortunately we weren’t given any sort of direction as to which oysters were which, and the mignonette, cocktail and tartar sauces were lackluster, but luckily they did the trick naked on the half shell.

Grilled Octopus and Baby Beet Salad - For round two we went with the grilled octopus and baby beet salad, it being the namesake vegetable, which apparently stems from the fact that in Daryl’s native Australia they slap the purple roots on everything. The tentacles came with a perfect light char resting on a bed of hummus, lemon confit for bite and olives for salt. A small salad of grilled celery and cilantro balanced out the plate making for a solid appetizer. The beet salad, a staple on almost every New American menu in town was good and light, mixed with apple matchsticks and a nutty pistachio vinaigrette.

Main Courses - On to the main courses, which were the seared yellowfin tuna n’ lobster and braised beef short ribs. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the whole lobster claws on the first plate that stood out, but the yellowfin seared with a peppery bark on the outside and a properly rare center. Unfortunately the lobster was on the rubbery side and the cartilage was still inside. The tuna and claws laid on a mound of nicoise’d fingerlings, green beans and cilantro that made this entrée salad a lot to tackle. With so much going on, scaling the dish back down to a simpler rendition would have done it justice.

The short ribs, on the other hand, were an extremely righteous dish. Braised to melting meat perfection, the off the bone beef had enough fat and flavor alone, but the port wine demi took it to a special place. Resting on a pillow of truffled mashed potatoes, complete with shaved black truffle instead of just cheap fake oil that everyone else uses, this is what high-class meat and potatoes should be like. There were also some nice crisp green and wax beans to bring cohesion, but really, it was the truffle and beef that did it for me.

Dessert - To round it all out, we closed with a pretty traditional crème brulee – a thick sugar crust that hid a nice buttery custard underneath.

Drinks - Since the journey left us parched, drinks were in order right away. Gaby went with sparkling cocktail with muddled raspberry and mint called Bohemian Spirit and I went with the king of Belgian beers, Delirium Tremens.

Service and Cost:

Throughout dinner it was clear that the Daryl, along with Olivier and Chef Hassan Belamine really actually cared about both the hospitality and edible sides of BEET. This translated to attentive and welcoming service that made for a relaxing dinner.Costs are on the moderate to high side and include:

Appetizers - $10 - $18
Entrees - $16 - $33

Sides - $6
Drinks - $8 - $12

Alewife's Happy Hour Pleasantly Surprises

Meg and I met at Alewife this week, together with a new We Heart Astoria colleague, Chad, which is super exciting.  I haven't been there in a while and have heard some mixed things about their new menu, so I wanted to judge for myself.  Not only was I pleasantly surprised, I'd highly recommend you guys to check it out.

They had a fabulous Wednesday night special, which included 2 cute little sliders and a beer for $10.  It was a great deal, and while these teeny burgers looked awesome, I actually had a spicy jalapeno burger for lunch (more on that later) so I decided to go for the oysters.  Two words - totally wowed!

Chillin Oysters
- Because they were simply calling my name, I ordered a half dozen raw oysters that came with a side of mignonette sauce and cocktail sauce.  I was happy to see that the oysters were large, briny and oh so fresh.  I spritzed some lemon on top, which enhanced their flavor perfectly and the meaty part of the oyster was truly like a beautiful pearl of the sea.  It had a fresh flavor that tasted of the ocean, but definitely not fishy.  Each piece was substantial and didn't even need the fixins, to be honest.  A simple spritz of lemon was just enough.

Garlic Fries - Meg also ordered some garlic fries for the table, which were awesome.  Their crisp texture made us swoon, and the garlicky flavor was delightful and definitely not overpowering.  I like that we didn't find one single limp fry, and they were all beautifully crisped and ready to be dipped in ketchup.

Service and Cost:
The service was really nice and very low key.  Because it wasn't too busy, I felt that we had good access to our waitress, whenever we needed something.  The check came fast too and I didn't feel that we lingered for too long, after we were ready to go.

Costs are reasonable and I paid about $24 including tax and tip for my oysters and beer.  As I already mentioned, the happy hour special was just $10.

Olivia - Best Looking Eggs in Austin

While at SXSW last week, I of course had to take advantage of all the amazing food Austin has to offer.  And even in my fourth time in this city, there's never a shortage of something new and delicious to discover.  Olivia, a modern farm-to-table restaurant was definitely on my list, especially as it came up when working on the Daily Meal's 101 Best Restaurants in America.

Atmosphere:
Located in the beautiful, trendy neighborhood of South Lamar, Olivia was one of many interesting restaurants found there.  The main attraction for me was their farm to table philosophy, and the fact that you can literally go and check out their gorgeous little backyard garden and chickens, that reigned freely on the grounds, proved its authenticity.

The restaurant is really modern and sleek inside, with earthy muted colors that work well to relax the senses.  There's a few cushy booths as well as more traditional tables and a vibrant bar.  I first situated myself there while waiting for my friend Jessica to arrive.  Greeted by the friendly bar staff, they were already taking care of me and I enjoyed the Southern hospitality.

As I was there for brunch, it was quite busy both inside and in the outdoor seating area.  This was testament to Olivia's solid reputation for great quality food, and the crowd didn't thin out at all during our entire stay.

Food:
There was lots to choose from, but I had my eye on something authentic and asked the bartender for his specific recommendations.  He steered me to the friend oyster benedict, which is what I ended up getting.

Fried Oyster Benedict - Loving my oysters, this certainly wasn't a hard sell, especially when I saw they were paired with farm fresh poached eggs.  I can't properly describe how satisfying it was to break the yolk on these babies, as they released the most beautiful orange color.  They tasted even better than they looked and the texture was just out of this world- soft, velvety and luxurious.  I was surprised (well not really) when a woman next to me got the same dish and thought there was something wrong with the eggs because they were so bright.  It's astounding, but we're so used to eating poor quality eggs that getting something as beautiful and rich as this, is so far from the norm.

Sticky Buns - Having a nice view into the kitchen, I kept my eye on the golden, fluffy sticky buns, which we decided to share.  One portion was good enough for at least three, and they were fantastic.  Moist on the inside and glazed with a rich, bourbony concoction, they were also made with chunky pecans, together creating a modern take on a classic Southern comfort staple.

Service and Cost:
While the initial service here was awesome, it suffered quite a bit once we sat down.  Unfortunately my friend was a bit under the weather and needed more TLC than usual, which wasn't granted.  Our waiter seemed to be really unaware of what we wanted and acted surprised when we asked for something that should've been given to us from the get go.

Costs are moderate and include:

Brunch entrees - $11 - 25
Dinner entrees - $21 - $32
You can also get a tasting menu for $75-$95 per person

Cavo's Oyster Mania

Something fun that's currently going on at Cavo is its oyster special that I'd like to highlight here.  While sometimes I get a little turned off by their "Ladies Eat Free" Thursday night special, I think the oyster thing is definitely a bit more up my alley - and I hope yours too.  Enjoying the food at Cavo pretty consistently, I have high hopes for their new oyster nights, which take place every Tuesday and Wednesday night, all night.  Here's the deal:

Every Tuesday/Wednesday, $1 oysters all evening

A similar deal is also applicable on Saturdays when from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. you can also get $1 oysters and enjoy them in the comfort of Cavo's famous outdoor garden (pictured above).  While kicking your oysters back, you can also indulge in their stiff specialty cocktails or even their lovely Greek wine.  Have fun with this fabulous special.
