Mezze Place – “Mezzed Up” on Goodness

I just had to steal this funny phrase, "mezzed up", I heard from Mackenzi’s girlfriend Kellner, who loves this place so much. Mackenzi is a big fan too of course and the two have been spreading the good word about Mezze Place ever since it opened a few months ago.

Meg and I were really curious to try it, and when the time came, we organized our bi-monthly We Heart Astoria Queens Blogger social there. Hurray for that, as we all really loved it and felt extremely welcome by the gracious staff. I’m definitely understanding why it’s become such a quick favorite for a lot of folks in the community – especially vegetarians.

Atmosphere:
If you think back on the old Mundo space, you’ll remember how intimate it is, and in my eyes, that’s a good thing. The experience here feels really private and personal and although I’d recommend coming to Mezze with 1 or 2 other people, it’s OK for larger groups too, as long as you make a reservation.

While most of the décor doesn’t differ too much from Mundo, there’s one really awesome (and huge) distinguishing factor, which is a beautiful “Mezze Place” mural on the wall that’s closest to the kitchen. I kept turning around to look at it, as it was created by a local and exemplified what Mezze is all about – interesting Middle Eastern flavors, hospitality and fun. It almost looks like an infographic that you just want to snap a photo of and share with your closest Facebook and Twitter friends.

Food:
Besides the food tasting absolutely delicious, I was really happy with the pacing of it and found myself feeling pleasantly satiated after the entire experience – not uncomfortably full.

Mezze – There were many mezze shared around the big table, which was a lot of fun. And just when we thought they were done, they kept on coming. First came the refreshing, yogurt based dips (labaneh) with black sesame and oregano. They were both delicious and ultra creamy, which was perfect for spreading on the fluffly house-made pita bread that was served in a rustic fashion (aka inside a brown paper bag).

Next came the red lentil kofte (similar to Mundo’s red sonjas), which you wrap in buttery pieces of lettuce and spritz with fresh lemon. I loved them…and even more than Mundo’s version because of the friendly, bite-sized pieces.

The tabouleh salad was simple but looked really vibrant, and I adored the healthy sprinkling of blood red pomegranate seeds on top. I loved this touch, as it’s a very Israeli thing to add, the pomegranate being a symbol of life and love. Additionally, the salad incorporated plenty of fresh parsley, garlic and scallions, providing some nice bite.

Two other mezze, if you can believe it, were their homemade falafel and roasted cauliflower. The falafel stood out to me for its perfectly crisp exterior and soft (almost creamy) interior, which was paired with yummy pickles. It didn’t need a side of tahini or anything, but we couldn’t resist dipping it into the labaneh.

While I liked the cauliflower as well, I think it begged for more seasoning such as salt. Nevertheless, it was a beautiful dish and a healthful one at that.

Entrees – Each ordering our own entrée, I went for the lamb sania (sort of like moussaka) that was served in a rustic, round metal pan. I loved the layering of it, which made it look very beautiful, with the sprinkling of nuts and fresh herbs that you see on top. The lamb itself was really interesting, albeit a little chewy, flavored with a Middle Eastern spice mix called ras-el-hanout.

I also had the pleasure of trying my friend Dayna’s short ribs, which were absolutely spectacular. They fell apart upon contact with a fork and tasted rich and juicy. The sauce that coated them boasted a lovely texture that did a great job of soaking into the side of whole wheat cous-cous.

Dessert – There were three desserts we shared, but two in particular put me over the edge. The Middle Eastern cheesecake was my favorite, followed by Mezze’s version of rice pudding.

The former was almost savory, combining mozzarella cheese with ricotta and another cheese I can't remember. Topped with pistachios and some pretty-in-pink rose water, it had a unique taste that almost reminded me of Slovak-style fried cheese with a sweet finish. The best part for me was the well done, golden crust that was fun to break with a fork.

Service and Cost:
As I mentioned, the pacing of the meal was perfect, and I was glad that we didn't have to wait too long for anything. There always seemed to be something new and exciting coming, it was just a matter of time before it arrived.

We also loved interacting with Mezze’s staff, including their owner Youad, who was friendly and treated us with the utmost amount of hospitality. At the end of the meal, he thanked each one of us, and I couldn’t help feeling that our visit meant a lot to him. It’s something that makes me want to return here soon.

Costs are very reasonable and include:

Mezze - $5-$15
Entrees - $11-$19
Dessert - $8-$10

Mundo - Now Closed on Wednesdays

Mundo, a long-time favorite, known for killer small plates and interesting ethnic dishes such as the Ottoman Dumplings pictured above, is changing their hours slightly.  They will now be closed on Wednesdays, using mid-week as a day of rest.

I wanted to spread the word in case anyone was thinking of heading over there.  They'll remain open for the rest of the week and on the weekend.

If you'd like to visit their sister restaurant, La Papa, their doors will be open on Wednesdays and throughout the week.

Mundo is on Summer Vacation

Mundo, home of the red sonjas (pictured above) is taking a summer vacation for the month of August. Yes, you heard me right...nearly the entire month, from August 3rd all the way through August 26th.

We'll miss you Mundo and your delectable food--but we're excited for your return when we'll enjoy our favorite old treats and maybe some new ones too. After all, absence makes the heart (and the tastebuds) grow fonder.

Mundo Introduces La Papa - Baked Potato Bar

When Meg told me last week that a baked potato bar was opening in Astoria, I got mighty excited. And when I heard that it's from the owner's of Mundo, my enthusiasm grew! Introducing, La Papa in the old Pastalicious space on 30th Avenue.

La Papa's show-stopper is the mighty baked potato (apparently a popular fast food in Turkey), which after baked, its contents are mashed with butter (or olive oil) and kasseri cheese. The rest is up to you, as you can choose unlimited toppings or you can go with a suggested "papa," such as:

LaPapa Classic - Beef franks, Russian salad, pickles, green olives & corn

LaPapa Chili con Carne - Chili con carne with beans, jalapeno, tzatziki, corn & tortilla chips

LaPapa Vegetarian - Corn, mushrooms, Russian salad, beets & green olives

LaPapa All-American - Corn, sour cream, bacon bits, fresh broccoli & pickled cucumbers

Or you can choose any of these toppings: artichokes, bacon bits, beef franks, beets, black olives, black olive paste, corn, green olives, jalapeno, mushrooms, pickled cucumbers, roasted red & green peppers, Russian salad, sour cream, sweet & sour red cabbage, tortilla chips, tuna salad, tzatziki

If you're not in the mood for a potato, they also have soups, a jumbo hot dog and Turkish-style paninis. A sweet treat that caught my eye was the Supangle (dark chocolate pudding).

Prices are very affordable with all baked potato options being just $6 (except for the chili con carne, which is $6.50). In fact, nothing on the menu is over $6.50, which is quite the steal.

I plan on trying them soon and will let you know my thoughts.

Mother's Day in Astoria

Mother's Day is this Sunday and there's never a lack of activity in Astoria. Below you'll find interesting restaurant specials and suggestions for a Mother's Day lunch, dinner or brunch.

Prix-Fixe Specials:

Seva - Although this isn't a Mother's Day prix-fixe per se, I'd recommend a visit here for either lunch or dinner. They offer a $12 three-course dinner and a $7 two-course brunch. The portions are generous, the food is delicious and it's a BYOB so you could bring your own wine.
30-07 34th street, Astoria, NY 11103. 718.626.4440

Bistro Les Minots - Their $29.95/person all-day Mother's Day special will feature classic French dishes such as escargots, braised short ribs, an apple tart and the like. Brunch will be offered between 11am - 4:30pm, showcasing their regular menu. 47-16 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11103. 718.606.2535

Ovelia - Promising a modern Greek experience, Ovelia's $28/person three-course prix-fixe is packed with flavorful dishes such as homemade Greek sausage, fresh seafood, a leg of lamb among others. 34-01 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11103. 718.721.7217

Zenon Taverna
- Both a prix-fixe (price is still being decided) and the regular menu will be available. I prefer their keftedes or Cypriot meatballs that are full of flavor and spice. The hospitality is wonderful--it's very much a family oriented place. 34-10 31st Avenue, Astoria, NY 11106. 718.956.0133

Cavo - An upscale Mother's Day at this Greek eatery includes a $54/per person four-course meal, complete with a tuna roll sampling, salad, a variety of entrees and dessert. Click here for the Mother's Day menu. Valet parking is complimentary and seating starts at 1pm. 42-18 31st Ave, Astoria, NY 11103. 718.721.1001

Trattoria L'Incontro - Although this place is all booked up for Mother's Day, if you want it bad enough, you can call to see if they get cancellations between now and Sunday. The offering is a $60 four-course prix-fixe. Another splurge but the food is fantastic! 21-76 31st Street, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.721.3532

Specials but no Prix-Fixe:

Vesta - A great place to bring Mom, Vesta has a cozy, unpretentious vibe. Brunch will be available from 11am - 4pm and dinner will start at 5pm and go until 10pm. Special dishes added to the menu include charred calamari, orecchiette with asparagus ragu and double lump-blue crab cakes. 21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.545.5550

Mundo - They'll have a couple of daily specials, one of which includes grilled shrimp but aside from that, their menu will remain unchanged. Good thing too because they already offer so many goodies such as empanadas, red sonjas and Ottoman dumplings. 31-18 Broadway #E, Astoria. 718.777.2829

718 - Serving dinner dishes all day long, the daily specials encompass a variety of grilled plates such as calamari, a rack of lamb, sea scallops--and the only non-grilled specials offering is the chocolate tartlet. Personally, I love their tarte flambees--try those! 35-01 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.204.5553

Il Bambino - Want to bring Mom to an Astoria gem? Try Il Bambino where they'll have a couple of panini, crostini and salad specials for Mother's Day. Besides that, their fabulous menu of crunchy paninis and small plates remains the same. 34-08 31st Avenue, Astoria, NY 11106. 718.626.0087

Business as Usual but Still Noteworthy:

Akti - The fresh seafood here is always impressive and they have a delectable meze selection. It's been open for about a year and has gotten very popular. They're almost booked up for Mother's Day but have a couple of open reservations (7:30pm, 8:00pm) so call soon if you're interested. 34-19 30th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11103. 718.721.3530

Agnanti - If you're looking for traditional Greek food, this is it. Halloumi, biftekia, keftedes, Agnanti has it all. They might end up with some daily specials but that hasn't been decided yet. Reservations are suggested, as Agnanti gets crowded. 19-06 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.833.7033

Piccola Venezia - An upscale Italian joint, it's on the traditional side and their fresh pasta is supposed to be superb. The signature menu will stay the same for Mother's Day and there will be three main seatings -- 1:00pm, 3:30pm and 6:30pm. 42-01 28th Avenue, Astoria NY 11103. 718.721.8470

Happy Mother's Day Astoria!

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Astoria and LIC

Cinco de Mayo is here (tomorrow) and although the weather might not cooperate, the neighborhood restaurants and bars are breaking out all sorts of good specials that are worth checking out.

Specials

Mojave - Live music will get things started along with a complimentary first round of margaritas or sangritas with dinner.
22-36 31st Street, Astoria NY 11105. 718.545.4100

Margaritaville - The casual Mexican eatery will feature $4 shots of tequila, $20 buckets of beer (any beer) but the food offering won't vary from the everyday menu. 38-01 Broadway, Astoria NY 11103. 718.777.1707

Luna de Juarez - This boisterous Mexican cafe will host a party with live music, giveaways and 2-for-1 drinks for happy hour from 5pm - 8pm.
25-98 Steinway St, Astoria NY 11103. 718.274.4350

La Vuelta - LIC's Latin bistro will turn it up for tomorrow's holiday with $5 margaritas, $3 tequila shots and their scrumptious-sounding and gently priced grub. 10-43 44th Drive, Long Island City, NY 11101. 718.361.1858

Blackbird's - It's all about the drinks with tequila shots, margaritas and mojitos on special for $6. The food is just OK but the atmosphere is friendly and comfortable, a good place to grab a drink. 41-19 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11103. 718.943.6899

Ovelia - Although far from Latin, they'll have Mexican menu items tomorrow and will offer $4 Negra Modelo and Corona beer, $5 sangria, margaritas and tequila shots. 34-01 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11103. 718.721.7217

Gleason's
- The newly opened bar on Broadway boasts a $3 tequila and Corona special. It's a good opportunity to check out their new diggs. 33-08 Broadway, Astoria NY 11106. 718.626.5393

Business as Usual but Still Noteworthy

El Boqueron - Although the menu and the drinks will be the same as usual, they make a mean sangria (pictured above). If you're looking for a quieter, tamer Cinco de Mayo, you'll find it here. 31-01 34th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11106. 718.956.0107

Los Amigos - One of the more authentic Mexican restaurants in Astoria, it's good but not fancy. The food and drinks are already cheap, so there's no break in price. I do think that it's worth a visit. 22-73 31st Street, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.726.8708

Mundo - This cozy fusion restaurant will feature a shrimp casserole tomorrow and serve their yummy sangria, priced as usual. 31-18 Broadway #E, Astoria. 718.777.2829

Enjoy celebrating!

Still Deciding About Valentine's Day?

Guest Foodista Vicky and I send smooches your way

While for some, Valentine's Day is a dreaded Hallmark holiday, it could also be a lot of fun. It's about what you make of it, and since V-Day is on Saturday this year, there are plenty of things going on. From low-key casual dinners to extensive prix-fixe meals, the choice is yours. You could be as casual or fancy as you want to. Here are my recommendations, in no particular order.

Vesta
-
This neighborhood gem has won over my heart and my stomach. For $39.95 - $49.95, enjoy a three-course prix-fixe during these seating times: 5pm, 7pm and 9:30pm. As a personal recommendation, don't miss out on the Baby Jesus Cake--it's out of this world. Vesta Vino
- 21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.545.5550

Mundo - A cozy, veggie-friendly eatery, Mundo also boasts a three-course V-day prix-fixe with complimentary spiced wine. There's still room for the 6pm and the 10:15pm seatings but space is going fast. The cost is affordable at $80 per couple. Mundo - 31-18 Broadway, Store #E, Astoria NY 11106. 718.777.2829

Bistro 33 - Looking for an intimate, romantic atmosphere? Bistro 33 is your place--and they have great food to boot! The offering is pricey at $75 per-person but it includes a wine pairing with every course. Bistro 33 -
33 - 19-33 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.721.1933

Ovelia - Not just for lovers, Ovelia is great to visit with a group of friends. They take a fun, playful spin on V-day with their creative menu of modern Greek dishes such as the Saganaki Stroganoff. Enjoy a three-course prix-fixe for $55. Ovelia -
34-01 30th Ave, Astoria, NY 11103. 718.721.7217

Agnanti - A traditional Greek staple, Agnanti will feature their regular menu for V-day. But if you'd like to eat here, make a reservation now because seats fill up very fast. I was informed that when dining here on V-Day, you're limited to a two hour stay. Agnanti -
19-06 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.833.7033

Winegasm - What a deal! Winegasm offers a four-course prix-fix with wine for $45 per person. I recommend the bacon wrapped prunes and their cheeses are also great. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about their vinos, as they should be. Winegasm -
31-86 37th Street, Astoria NY 11103. 718.932.3331

Brick Cafe - Brick will be serving their regular menu with a couple of specials for V-day. Reservations are available and they have a great bar section where you could relax with a nice glass of wine before or after your meal. Brick Cafe -
30-95 33rd Street, Astoria, NY 11102. 718.267.2735

Fatty's Cafe - While their Valentine's Day "singles party" didn't quite work out last year, Fatty's is looking to turn things around in 2009. This casual beer, burger and Latin flava joint will offer a special prix-fixe menu. Costs and seatings are TBD so more to come on that. Fatty's -
25-01 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.267.7071

Il Bambino - A beloved neighborhood paninoteca, Bambino will be featuring a $40 V-day prix-fixe. Details are still hazy and I'll follow up with more information. If you're looking to eat from their regular menu, the green bean salad and the antipasto platter are amazing! Il Bambino -
34-08 31st Avenue, Astoria, NY 11106. 718.626.0087

Akti - This delicious Greek eatery on 30th Avenue will be serving dinner as usual on Valentine's Day. There might be a couple of daily specials and opportunities for special requests, so ask for them. Their seafood is especially tasty and very fun to share. Akti -

New Year's Eve at Mundo

Pictured above: Mundo's famous dish - Red Sonjas

Mundo - Back from Vacation

Great news! Mundo is back from a three week summer hiatus. They've re-opened their doors in time to participate in Queens Restaurant Week so check 'em out. Their welcome back message had a cryptic note about a new change. Not sure what that means but if anyone knows, please shoot me a note.

Don't miss out on Mundo and its delicious signature dishes such as the Red Sonjas, pictured above. And remember, this restaurant is very small so reservations are recommended.

Queens Restaurant Week Coming Soon

Like Manhattan, Queens is also holding its Restaurant Week soon--September 15-18, September 22-25. Usually it's been great because the prices are lower than in Manhattan, actually making Restaurant Week a good value. Not this year! I was surprised and annoyed to find out that the prices are on par with Manhattan Restaurant Week--$25 prix-fixe for lunch and $35 prix-fixe for dinner. I don't see the point, as most restaurants in Queens are a lot more cost effective than their Manhattan counterparts. So why put a big price tag on them and market them as a good deal? I simply don't get it.

Here's a list of the Astorian and LIC Restaurant Week participants. Some of them are worth checking out, but most of them I'd visit on a regular night.

JJ's Fusion - 37-05 31st Avenue, Astoria NY 11103. 718.626.8888

Mezzo Mezzo - 31-29 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria NY 11105. 718.278.0444

Mundo - 31-18 Broadway #E, Astoria NY 11106. 718.777.2829

Pinocchio Palace - 32-02 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11102. 718.932.4976

Riverview Restaurant (this one might be worth it) - 2-01 50th Avenue, Long Island City NY 11101. 718.392.5000

Tournesol - 50-12 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City NY 11101. 718.472.4355

Water's Edge (not worth it) - 4-01 44th Drive, Long Island City NY 11101. 718.482.0033

Winegasm -31-86 37th Street, Astoria NY 11103. 718.932.3331

Zenon Taverna - 34-10 31st Avenue, Astoria NY 11106. 718.956.0133

But there is one thing, which actually sounds like a deal:

The first 200 people that reveal their favorite restaurant in Queens will be invited to a kick-off party and media event, which includes a three course menu, representative of the Queens culinary scene. And these participants will also be entered to win various Queens restaurant gift certificates. Visit www.discoverqueens.info and then click "contact us" to name your favorite Queens restaurant.

Good luck!

Mundo's Summer Vacation

Mundo, one of my favorite Astorian hangouts is on summer hiatus from now until August 27th. Just wanted to let you know in case you get an intense craving for their famous red sonjas or creamy carrot dip. Mundo takes a break every year at this time--and why not? They work hard enough during the year.

Visit them when they reopen on August 28th.

Happy summer vacation Mundo--we hope that you get your beauty sleep!

A Summer Tasting at Mundo

Mundo - 31-18 Broadway #E, Astoria, NY 11106

www.mundoastoria.com

Mundo is a unique culinary find--not only because it features cuisine from all over the world but also because it's obscenely delicious. I was invited to their summer food tasting by Executive Chef John and was happy to attend along with my Joey in Astoria colleague Meg. While Meg had tried Mundo once before, our visit made her a full convert. I think she'll be coming back for more this summer and so will I.

Below is a rundown of the yummyness that we sampled:

Hungarian Cherry Soup: This was our first dish of the night and it was even better than the first time I had it. There were plenty of sour cherries in it and the chilled taste was fabulously refreshing, especially on a hot day. The last time I had it, its coloring was a little light (and not the most appetizing-looking) but this time it was perfect and very cherry-like. Meg seemed impressed and we both guzzled our soups down with gusto.

Dip Assortment: We were eager to have Mundo's famous carrot dip, which is so much more than just carrots. It has a creamy consistency and a lovely garlic flavor that kept us reaching for our pita slices. We also tried the fire-roasted eggplant dip and liked that too. It had a nice char flavor that was gentle to the palate. Our third dip was the hummus and roasted pepper dip, which was pretty standard and didn't wow us too much.

Red Sonjas: Mundo's signature dish couldn't be ignored and while Meg was looking forward to it, I was feeling lukewarm about it, based on my previous experience. But what arrived on our plates far surpassed my first mediocre tasting. These red lentil patties were absolutely delectable--soft and flavored perfectly with parsley, scallions and a hint of garlic. The best part was wrapping them in fresh lettuce leaves like bundles of precious cargo. I could've eaten at least three--and they were filling too.

Halloumi in a Vine Leaf: Being that both of us love cheese, we wanted to experiment with this Cypriot delicacy. Meg was intrigued by it and I, already tasting it last time, knew that it was good. The cheese was warm and stringy while the vine leaf provided nice earthiness--its shape also contained the cheese neatly, like a blanket.

Vegetable Empanada: This is one of the best empanadas I've ever tasted. Its excellence lies in the flaky, airy crust. While some empanadas have the tendency to be heavy, this one was anything but. The fresh, clean ingredients of spinach and feta were stellar and once again, I wish I had another serving in front of me.

Fava Bean Side Dish: I've never tried this here and actually didn't even see it on the menu until John explained that it was part another dish, the Egyptian Artichokes. It was certainly an in-between dish and a good palate cleanser. I liked that it was a veggie option, prepared sans frying and other unhealthful methods. Meg wasn't overly impressed by the quality of the beans but I thought they were OK. Definitely not a stand-out dish but it was pleasant enough. I liked the dill and lemon garnish for its crisp, acidy flavor.

Cheese Rolls: Now this, I would call a stand-out. It was presented beautifully in hand-rolled pastry dough and filled with feta cheese and roasted red peppers. The feta was melted beautifully and once dipped into black & red raspberry sauce, it was pure heaven.

Ottoman Dumplings: I was excited to have these for a second time and once again, they proved why this dish stays on Mundo's menu the entire year. The dumpling dough is exquisite and you can tell that it's handmade. As you're eating each once, you can imagine one of the Mundo chefs individually pinching the dough together to make a rustic triangle. The dumplings are stuffed with ground beef and topped with a fragrant garlic-yogurt sauce. It's fun to incorporate the sauce in all the dumplings and enjoy them in their full, creamy glory. This dish is more than a stand-out, it's a show-stopper.

Warm Semolina Helva: We couldn't believe that we had room for dessert. Well, we didn't but we ate it anyway because it was outstanding. The semolina exterior was warm and cinnamony while the interior was filled luxuriously with vanilla ice cream. A spoonful of this hot and cold combination put a satisfied smile on our faces. The crunchy pistachios were a great topping that enhanced the flavor of both the semolina and the rich ice cream. Meg and I were happy to split this, as I think it's a bit indulgent for one person.

The service was good and quite attentive--we were at a tasting after all. The servers chatted with a bit and we enjoyed the camaraderie. You really feel that Mundo's staff is a cohesive team, working towards a common goal--to please and feed Astoria (and beyond).

The prices are modest too--apps range between $3.50-$7, main courses between $12-$20 and dessert is typically $7.
