Game of Thrones Direwolf Pigeon Pie

Last night was a day many of us fantasy genre fans were waiting for - the premiere of Game of Thrones Season 6.  Anytime I can get to see Jon Snow on the small screen is a win (too bad they killed him off last season), but last night's episode delivered at least a little Snow action.  But...enough about Jon Snow and on to the Westerosi food, which very much represented at Moses and Sonya's big GOT debut party.  Not only did we feast on mulled wine, brown stew, and lemon cakes of course, I also cooked up a special direwolf pigeon pie you see above.

Using a rustic recipe I spotted on Delicious Magazine's website, I substituted the need for real pigeon, pheasant and venison meat for good ol' chicken.  Using both ground chicken as well as leftover roast chicken breasts, I made it taste a lot heartier by adding a good amount of red wine and beef broth. In fact, someone at the party remarked at how much the chicken actually tasted like beef.  So all in all, mission accomplished.

To give this an extra special touch, I found an illustration of a direwolf, traced it onto the pie dough and then placed it in the center.  I then found some whole peppercorns in my pantry, which I used for his eye.  Really fun, and the result was earthy, primal and totally delicious. Hope you try it as well - here's Delicious' recipe.

Happy Pi Day PDX!

It's National Pi Day, which is just a great excuse to indulge in a sweet (or savory), delicious slice of you know what.  It's nice to see Portland capitalizing on this, as I noticed several restaurants, bakeries and sweet shops having Pi Day Specials. Check out a few here:

Pine State Biscuits - Starting with one of my neighborhood favorites, the legendary Pine State Biscuits is featuring their Pecan Pie in all three locations.  Stop by anytime today and get your fix.  2204 NE Alberta St, Portland. 503.477.6605

Lauretta Jean's Pie - As their name implies, pie is their livelihood so they have plenty of options to choose from including special flavors such as Lemon Beach Pie with a Saltine crust and their Key Lime Pie.  They're also whipping up a spiked cherry lemonade for just $3.14 a glass.  Come down and enjoy til around 11 p.m. today! 3402 SE Division Street, Portland. 503.235.3119

Mother's Bistro - This quintessential comfort food bistro always has pie on the menu so you can be sure they'll whip up a special "Pie of the Day" today with a generous hunk of ice cream and a decadent sauce.  212 SW Stark Street, Portland. 503.464.1122

Lovejoy Bakers - Recently having the pleasure to try this gourmet-style local bakery, I noticed they're serving beautifully crafted pie cookies in honor of 3.14.  They come in several festive colors and flavors.  939 NW 10th Avenue, Portland. 503.208.3113

Grand Central Bakery - For serious pie lovers, you can get a load of their house-made pies from their U-Bake freezer and warm them up in the comfort of your own home.  A little semi-homemade action if you will!  Various locations in Portland.

5 Great Seasonal Pies for the Fall

I love the fall, as it’s a great time to enjoy comforting foods that are warm, gooey, and sometimes sweet. Things like pies for example are now the ticket (and when aren’t they really?) and here I’ve put together a short list of 5 of my favorite places to get them:

Astor Bake Shop
– I love ABS for pie especially since they often dish up delectable creations and bake with seasonal ingredients such as figs, apples, pumpkins and the like. Here’s a recent fig and almond tart/pie that I have my eye on.  12-23 Astoria Blvd, Astoria. 718.606.8439

Martha’s Country Bakery
– To put together a pie round-up and not include Martha’s would be a sin, so I have to give them a nod here. From pumpkin, blueberry, lemon meringue, blueberry, cherry, apple, sour cream apple, they’ve got it all! I love the buttery, crumbly crust on their pies and appreciate that the ingredients inside are chunky and rustic.  36-21 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria. 718.545.9737

Leli’s Bakery
– Similar to Martha's, this country-style bakery and cafe serves up traditional fruit pies such as cherry, apple and blueberry. Flavors vary per day, but the price remains the same at $12.95 per pie.  You may get lured into trying their other goodies while you're there.  Don't resist! 35-14 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.626.8090

Queens Comfort
– While you won’t find pie on their menu everyday, they do bake some on occasion and when they do, you can believe it’ll be creative and tasty. Look for non traditional pies such as this Pennsylvania Dutch Peanut Butter Whoopie Pie. Make sure you check their Instagram often where they disclose new things they’re working on.  40-09 30th Avenue, Astoria. 646.597.8687

51st Bakery & Cafe - This quaint little bakery in LIC dishes out some beautifully rustic creations such as this gorgeous apple tarte that resembles a traditional French galette.  Yum! 5-33 51st Avenue, LIC.

3 Delicious Summer Eats in Astoria and LIC

To go along with news of summer food gracing restaurant menus, here's a brief round-up of some new dishes surfacing in Astoria and LIC.

Alobar's Grilled Octopus - This beautiful summery dish of grilled octopus, tasso & corn succotash, roasted tomato and watercress caught my eye. I love the colors in it - they just scream summer - and appreciate the grilled preparation. 46-42 Vernon Blvd, LIC. 718.752.6000

Astor Bake Shop's Watermelon Juice - Sweet and natural, this watermelon juice will surely wake your senses and refresh you at the same time.  It's great to see that Chef George is always thinking of something new to surprise guests with.  Something else that piqued my interest are his recently made blueberry peach pies.  Mmmm.... 12-23 Astoria Blvd, Astoria.  718.606.8439

Bear's Beet Chips - Although I don't have a picture of these, I think the description will say it all - light and crispy farmer's market beet leafs that are tempura battered and fried.  Also in more good Bear news, they're now offering food delivery from Tuesday - Sunday between 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. 12-14 31st Avenue, Astoria.  917.396.4939

Astor Bake Shop's 3rd Annual Pie Eating Contest

Can you believe that Astor Bake Shop is turning 3 years old? To me it seems like they've been a staple in the neighborhood forever.  Their treats are among the best in terms of quality ingredients and also quite beautiful in aesthetics.

To celebrate their little milestone, Astor Bake Shop will be hosting another pie eating contest this year, which promises to be a lot of fun.  I mean, who wouldn't want to eat their delicious pies and potentially get rewarded too?  There's a few ground rules to know about, but overall it'll be a race to the sweet finish line.  Wussies..stay home!

3rd Annual Astor Bake Shop Pie Eating Contest
Sunday, June 30th at 2:30 p.m.

It's free to sign up and contestants will compete in three categories.  The first person to finish their pie in its entirety wins - no assistance from utensils or your hands allowed.

Apple Pie with 3 varieties of locally grown apples
Classic Pumpkin
Chunky Pecan
Chocolate Gran Marnier Cheesecake

They're open til 4 p.m. today so go in and treat yourself to something nice and sweet.  Hope everyone has a great day with their friends and family.  All the best to you!

Nutella Peanut Butter Pie Bliss

There's nothing like delicious, homemade baked goods to put a smile on your face, especially at a time when we all need it.  Plus...it's fall-time, which is prime pie season, so why not take a crack at a delicious homemade pie and enjoy it with your loved ones?!

I just happened to see the recipe for this indulgent Nutella, peanut butter pie on the Nutella Facebook fan page (yes, I'm a proud member) and decided to make it for Paul and Jamil's big Halloween bash last weekend.  Although it was a bit unwieldy to eat, Dan gave me his compliments, and I ate some too and devoured it rather quick.

The unique thing about it is that it's made using a pretzel crust, which adds a little savory to this sweet dish.  My peanut butter topping came out a bit sloppy, as you can see here, but if you're into rustic things as I am, you won't mind - and it's all about how it tastes in your mouth.

Here's the recipe, courtesy of Shugary Sweets blog.

San Francisco Starts with Pie

Currently on a business trip in San Francisco, I can't say that I mind being surrounded by wonderful, locally-grown food.  It's quite amazing actually to observe the food-loving culture and the friendly folks who work in these establishments, only too happy to share their enthusiasm for food with you.

Casually strolling into a cute little cafe called Mission Pie
in the up-and-coming Mission District, I was immediately surrounded by down-home goodness of buttery pie, but also some really fresh and interesting salad options.  And even though I wanted the sweet (and the savory) pies so badly, I held back (just for the time being) and went for the healthy alternative in the form of this beautiful farro salad.

Atmosphere:

The fact that this place was pretty heavily populated on a random late mid-afternoon is testament to its popularity.  In fact, even when I passed by later in the evening, it was still buzzing - even more so, I think.

And as soon as you come in and observe the atmosphere, you can understand why.  Cozy round tables of all different sizes take up the main dining area, and you'll notice a mix of solo patrons on their laptops as well as couples, families or what have you.  I took a seat by the front window in some funky bicycle seat stools that were pretty rad and I smiled at how whimsy and a little silly they were.  No matter - I was totally comfortable, happy and ready to dig in.

Food:
Although their specialty is of course pies (both savory and sweet), I went for the beautifully fresh farro salad that seemed just like the perfect, healthy snack in between meals.

Farro Salad - Not only did this salad look incredibly attractive, the price was right too - so much so that I couldn't believe my eyes.  But more on that later...first let me tell you about its taste.  The farro itself was superbly cooked al dente, having that little toothsome bite that I love, and it was mixed with plenty of fresh herbs and veggies.  The most wonderful and fragrant herb that emanated from this mixture was mint - so zingy and lemony, it brought your tastebuds to attention right away.  The best part by far was the crimson tomato that tasted sun-ripened and was so juicy - really simple yet so striking.  The big hunk of feta cheese that rested on top was lovely too, giving this entire dish some more well-roundedness and stamina.

Service and Cost:
I couldn't believe how friendly the staff was.  Well actually...I should believe it, as that's usually the case anywhere outside of NY.  Not only did I get asked how my weekend was going, the woman helping me seemed genuinely interested in my answer.

Costs are unbelievably cheap, and I paid a mere $2.50 for a small (although I'd call it medium) sized bowl of farro salad.  Unheard of in NY - or anywhere for that matter.

Now I can't wait to taste the pies! I will most certainly be back.
