Where to Watch Baseball in Astoria (and where to eat and drink)

Dan sporting his mini Mets cap

Baseball season has officially returned,
and with lots of loyal Mets and Yankees fans amongst us, I thought to put together a helpful Astoria guide of where to catch the games.  Hope you enjoy the action in these fun, festive and sports oriented spots.

Katch
- Checking out this place during football season, it has plenty of TV screens to catch the games and tasty food and drinks specials.  The one I spied recently was for 60 cent wings and a special on red velvet rice crispies treats.  31-19 Newton Ave, Astoria.  718.777.2230

Mad Donkey - Just a few steps away from the 36th Avenue subway stop, the Mad Donkey always has you covered with daily specials on draft beer and their simple but delicious bar food (fried pickles anyone?).  Insider tip: You can save a few bucks off your bill if you download the Scoutmob app and use the discount during your visit.  32-07 36th Avenue, Astoria. 718.204.2070

Astoria Brewhouse
- Situated in another convenient spot, just off the 30th Avenue subway stop, I like that the Brewhouse offers plenty of good sports watching in a casual comfortable setting.  Whether you're a sports fan or not, you'll appreciate its laid back atmosphere and solid food.  They also host trivia on Thursdays, which is a lot of fun! 28-50 31st Street, Astoria.  718.728.0050

Dillinger's
- Having a positive experience at Dillinger's myself, I always get a positive response when asking Astoria natives about it.  They have great food and drinks special virtually every day of the week, with Tuesdays being their 25 cent wing night.  Dillinger's creates a perfect atmosphere for watching sports such as baseball.  46-19 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.956.5601

Studio Square
- There's nothing like watching a game on the big screen, and since the weather will hopefully get warmer soon, there will be more opportunities for that at Studio Square.  I love perusing their fun drinks specials, such as the current Cherry Pop Special, featuring Sam Adams Cherry Wheat beer. Yum! 35-33 36th Street, Astoria. 718.383.1001

What to do on Superbowl Sunday

The Superbowl is almost here and I hope you're excited.  I know I'm more looking forward to the incredible eats and drinks rather than watching the actual game - but it all works together to create a great atmosphere during one of the most important sporting events in America.  Still undecided about what you're doing for it? Here are some of my personal recommendations:

Studio Square
- Hosting a big Superbowl shin-dig, they're bringing out the big guns with unlimited beer, wine, sangria, S2 Loaded Lemonade, and Red Stag iced tea.  A buffet with piping hot food will be available too - all for $40/person, and it starts at 4 p.m. 35-33 36th Street, Astoria.  718.383.1001

Raven's Head Public House - Come on down to this newish sports haven on Sunday, where they're taking Superbowl reservations for large groups.  They'll have beer and food specials that day, and you can expect a big helping of wings as one of the piece-de-resistance items.  38-04 Broadway, Astoria.  718.777.7565

Astoria Brewhouse - Always down to throw a party, they'll be having a private affair in honor of the Superbowl, which starts at 6 p.m. and goes til the end of the game.  While it's a bit of a splurge at $80/pop, you'll get an open bar, food and a chance to win prizes including a flat screen TV.
28-50 31st Street, Astoria.  718.728.0050

Malu - Probably not the first place you think of when considering the Superbowl, but they've got all your sweet treats.  If you order your stuff by Thursday, you'll have it ready by the Superbowl - think ice cream cakes, mini cupcakes, cookies, brownies and all sorts of toppings.    12-09 Jackson Avenue, LIC.  718.729.6258

My top Superbowl recipes - And of course there's nothing like making your own grub when hosting or attending a Superbowl party.  Here are some my gametime suggestions:
Bacon deviled eggs, Adam's Thai-style ribs, Chocolate covered bacon, Nutella peanut-butter pie.

Eurocup Action in Astoria

With the
Eurocup 2012 in full swing right now, everyone is catching a part of the action, and Astoria is delivering a fabulous atmosphere to watch the games.  Many of the bars in the nabe are showcasing the daily matches, some of them running great gametime specials.  Here's a small sampling of the venues where you can enjoy some futbal!

Veslo - Being that it's a Croatian establishment, naturally they're showing Croatia games most on their 9 HD screens in the bar area.  Come dressed in your Checkers, and enjoy being a part of the fun by drinking Karlovacko beer and munching on typical Croatian eats such as cevapcici sliders, raznjici (pork kabob), octopus salad and more.  32-11 Broadway, Astoria.  718.728.0549

Studio Square - THE destination to watch all the games, Studio Square opens up at noon each day for primetime game access.  You can sit in the big garden area and enjoy the action on the big screen and some really enticing drinks specials too, such as a pitcher of Sam Adams Cherry Wheat & 3 shots of Jim Beam Red Stag for just $20.  35-33 36th Street, Astoria.  718.383.1001

Bohemian Hall - Also open at noon each day for soccer, the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden will deliver on true, authentic Eastern European atmosphere with all the kolbasy, sauerkraut, dumplings and fried cheese to prove it.  They'll feature their weekly Happy Hour specials too, with $3 mugs of draft beer between 5 p.m. - 6 p.m. and $5 mugs of draft beer between 6 p.m - 7 p.m.  29-19 24th Avenue, Astoria.  718.728.9278

Astoria Brewhouse - Featuring soccer in an eclectic atmosphere (that's really convenient to the subway), you can either watch it inside the bar or also in their outdoor garden with a retractable roof.  I love to enjoy the latter, and take advantage of their happy hour special too, which includes $4 select domestic pints, $5 select imported pints, $5 well drinks and $5 house wines between 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. 28-50 31st Street, Astoria.  718.728.0050

Avenue Cafe - Also on the 30th Avenue strip, where a lot of soccer can be seen, Avenue is certainly the place to go if you're comfortable with a lot of testosterone.  And I mean a lot.  Most of the clientele consists of guys and they're pretty avid futbal fans, so you'll find good company here.  Enjoy the games with an ice cold frappe and a sweet fresh-made crepe with fruit or other inventive fillings such as biscotti.  35-27 30th Avenue, Astoria.  718.278.6967

Astoria Halloween Roundup - Spooky-ky-ky!

It's that time of year again - when we dress up, look silly and make any excuse to party hardy.  To get you thinking about your Halloween celebration, I've put together this list of really cool stuff that's going on in and around Astoria.  I wish you all a very spooktacular Halloween!

DiWine - Enjoy DiWine's disco themed Halloween party this Saturday night.  Make sure to show up in costume to receive some extra perks and also enjoy drinks specials such as $6 cocktails and $5 pints.  The fun starts at 10 p.m. and will last all night. 41-15 31st Avenue, Astoria.  718.777.1355

Veslo - Start the partying early at Veslo, as they're having their shin-dig on Friday night - and this one will be wild.  Featuring a costume contest with some pretty stiff prizes such as a 46" HDTV, $100 and a $50 Veslo gift card, you're not going to want to miss it.  Come by at 11:00 p.m. and party your socks off.  32-11 Broadway, Astoria.  718.728.0549

El Ay Si - Putting a new spin on a Halloween celebration, El Ay Si is hosting a Spooky Speakeasy Sunday, complete with flappers, silent movies, The Charlston...think you get it.  Costumes are highly encouraged, as the best ones will be handsomely rewarded.  Come by as early as 4 p.m. and do catch their expected "magical performance." 47-38 Vernon Blvd, LIC. 718.389.8781

Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden - You can always count on the Beer Garden to throw an awesome party, and this year there are two - one for the adults and the other for the kiddies.  The adult one is this Saturday, starting at 9 p.m., complete with a costume contest, live music and the kiddie one is this Sunday from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.  Come to one or both! 29-19 24th Avenue, Astoria.  718.274.4925

Studio Square - Known for their parties, Halloween is always a big deal here.  Experiencing it first hand last year, it was a great time, and people really take the costume aspect seriously (first place prize are 2 Jet Blue round trip tix).  A live DJ, a costume contest and plenty of drinks specials will grace you that night, starting at 9 p.m. 35-33 36th Street, Astoria.  718.383.1001

Rest-Au-Rant - If you're looking for something more low-key, head over to one of my favorite wine bars in LIC.  Enjoy the festive atmosphere with party favors, food, drinks specials and costume prizes to boot, starting at 9 p.m.  30-01 35th Avenue, LIC.  718.729.9009

Waltz Astoria - In true Waltz fashion, Saturday night will bring a Halloween Social, which starts at 7 p.m.  You'll indulge in plenty of live music, hors d'oeuvres, a buffet and more.  There's an initial cover of $12 but after that the food and music is free.  Drinks are separate.  Enjoy, and don't forget to wear a costume.  23-14 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria.  718.95.MUSIC

Astoria Brewhouse - This cheery bar always has something lively going on during Halloween.  Their Saturday night costume contest promises some exciting winnings such as a $100, $50 and a $25 bar tab pick-up, so prepare to drink your heart out.  Show up anytime after 10 p.m. and stay all night.  28-50 31st Street, Astoria.  718.728.0050

Hellgate Social - A favorite spot for Halloween, this year they're stepping it up with a "Lost in Space" theme Halloween party, full on with aliens and other extra terrestrial embellishments, including themed drinks.  There's no cover and costumes are a must.  Walk in anytime after 6 p.m. and stay as long as you'd like.  12-21 Astoria Blvd, Astoria.  718.204.8313

Cavo - Another Halloween favorite, they roll out the big guns with a serious costume contest with up to $2,000 in prizes.  There's no cover but it's best to show up early, as it gets crowded (before 10:30 p.m.).  While you're there, enjoy fabulous cocktails, wine and lovely appetizers.  42-18 31st Avenue, Astoria.  718.721.1001

Mini Superbowl Round-Up

Sunday...Sunday - it's the sporting event most of the nation has been waiting for these past five months.  The Superbowl, of course.  While most places in the nabe are doing business as usual, there are a couple of establishments that are having specials, discounts and extended happy hours that I wanted to highlight.  So whether you choose to visit one of these places or simply stay home and make your own football feast, I hope you have a great time doing it.

Testaccio - While unexpected, this stylish Italian eatery will showcase the game from 4 p.m. - 11 p.m. with half off all draft and bottled beers.  But aside from the drinks, the food will be on special too, with a $10 price for fried calamari & zucchini, wood-oven roasted pizza rolls with ham and fontina, schiaciatta with potatoes, gorgonzola & anchovies, shrimp cocktail with Italian cocktail sauce and more.  They're even offering a take-out option, the "Testaccio Super Bowl Party Platter," which is chock-full-of munchie goodness.  47-30 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City. 718.937.2900

Gleason's
- Although still formulating their game-plan, Gleason's will of course be showing the game on multiple screens and will have a plethora of drinks specials and even a dedicated Superbowl menu.  Stop by if you're in the mood for a lively, social atmosphere.  33-08 Broadway, Astoria.  718.626.5393

Ditmars Station
- Previously known as YOLO, you can certainly count on Ditmars Station to ring in the football festivities.  They boast two huge, stadium-style TV screens where you can really see the action up close and personal, and in terms of food and drinks, they'll be having beer and appetizer specials that night.  22-55 31st Street, Astoria.  718.777.1177

Astoria Brewhouse - Another fun place to enjoy a good sporting event, you can either hang out up-front in the dimply lit bar area, or you can enjoy the more intimate feel of the indoor patio with tea lights, comfy seating and of course those big TVs.  For the Superbowl, they'll feature happy hour prices on pitchers of beer, wings and various appetizers.  28-50 31st Street, Astoria. 718.728.0050

Veslo
- One of the newest additions to the nabe is also having Superbowl specials starting at 6:30 p.m. You'll enjoy 2-for-1 drafts, Bud, Bud Light and well drinks.  In terms of food, you can get any of Veslo's Dalmatian creations or their wings and ribs special.  32-11 Broadway, Astoria.  718.728.0549

Have fun, and good luck to both teams!

A Spooktacular Halloween in Astoria

Happy almost Halloween Astorians!  As I usually do, I've prepared a menu of festive Halloween to-dos happening in and around Astoria.  It's great that the celebration falls on a Saturday this year, which means tons of fun parties, drinks specials and costume fun.  And just in case you're wondering, that's a picture of me in my friend Moses' Freddy mask.  Thought it made my Bond Girl outfit a little zestier.  Whatever you end up doing, hope it's spooktacular!

FIFA World Cup - Best Places to Watch & Munch

What an exciting couple of weeks it's going to be between now and July 11th! I'm referring to all the FIFA World Cup soccer coverage from South Africa.  It's not only thrilling to watch and support the United States in this major sporting event, but you'll also witness people's allegiances to their home countries abroad.  Mine is Slovakia and I'm excited for them to compete.

But part of all the fun is the atmosphere and where you choose to watch each match.  Here are a couple of my suggestions in no particular order.  Feel free to add in your own picks in the comments.

Testaccio - There's no secret about where Testaccio's allegiances lie - with Italy of course.  They'll open each day at 9:30 a.m. and will broadcast all the soccer games.  Italian pastries and coffee will be served until noon and you can enjoy a Peroni on the house each time Italy wins.  Cin-cin! 47-30 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City NY 11101. 718.937.2900

Yolo - Although they're not open for all the early morning games, they will be featuring brunch this Tuesday for the 2:00 p.m. game.  Beer will be on special (i.e. $15 pitchers) as well as morning cocktails such as Bloody Mary's and Mimosas.  They'll also have discounted food such as $8 burgers and wraps. 22-55 31st street, Astoria NY 11106.  718.777.1177

Athens Cafe - This is the perfect place to watch the World Cup if your loyalties lie with Greece. You certainly won't miss the games with up to 9 plasma TVs showcasing all the action. Enjoy a delicious frappe while rooting for your favorite players. 32-07 30th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11102.  718.626.2164

Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden - It's just our luck that they started "Happy Hour" today, in time for all the World Cup games.  That means $10 pitchers and dirt cheap shots for $2-$3.  Enjoy great soccer in this big outdoor space. 29-19 24th Avenue, Astoria NY 11102. 718.274.4925

Studio Square
- Take advantage of this large outdoor (and indoor) area for all major games. See schedule here - games start really early and although there are no specific food & drinks specials, it still promises to be boisterous and fun. 35-33 36th Street, Astoria NY 11106. 718.383.1001

Sunswick
- World Cup action goes strong all week with $1 off beers, $16 pitchers and $4 bottles.  Enjoy the games in this quaint, friendly atmopshere that serves really good bar food.  35-02 35th Street, Astoria NY 11106.  718.752.0620

Grand Cafe
- Another great venue to watch the World Cup if you're a fan of Greece, this place is usually buzzing, but even more so now with all the hard-core soccer fanatics.  Food & drinks remain regularly priced and I recommend trying the brunch.  37-01 30th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11103.  718.777.7321

El*Ay*Si
- They're ringing in the World Cup with different specials every day.  I like that the food & beer specials are themed to the country that's playing each day.  They won't be showing the really early morning games, but you can count on 9:30 a.m. games and 2:00 p.m. games to be available. 47-38 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City NY 11101. 718.389.8781

Mojave
- Mojave will also show the later games, as they open at 11:00 a.m. Although no specific specials are in place just yet, they're certainly working on it and I'll report back with more details.  They have a great outdoor garden to enjoy during warm weather.  22-36 31st Street Astoria NY 11105. 718.545.4100

Astoria Brewhouse
- You can watch all the games in this cozy, neighborly bar with a fun outdoor seating space with a retractable roof.  They'll feature their usual $4 beer special.  28-50 31st Street, Astoria NY 11102. 718.728.0050

Celebrate St. Patty's Day in Astoria

Tomorrow is St. Patty's day and that always promises a fun time, especially in Astoria.  The weather is supposed to be warm and sunny, offering the perfect opportunity to hop around to different bars and take advantage of various food and drinks specials.  Here are my personal suggestions (in alphabetical order):

Astoria Brewhouse (fka Indigo) - Always partaking in festivities, Astoria Brewhouse will offer drinks specials as well as an Irish food menu with specialties such as a corned beef sandwich, shepherd's pie, Irish-style fish and chips and more.  These specials will run all day tomorrow.  28-50 31st Street, Astoria.  718.728.0050

Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden - Although their drinks special is not St. Patrick's Day related (after all, they are a Czech/Slovak establishment), they will feature a 2-for-1 ladies night special all night.  29-19 24th Avenue, Astoria.  718.274.4925

Irish Rover
-
In addition to their already cheap drinks, they'll have live music starting at 8 p.m. as well as trays of complimentary Irish grub.  37-18 28th Avenue, Astoria.  718.278.9372

McCann's Pub - This Irish pub will certainly be celebrating tomorrow's holiday with various beer specials and typical Irish food such as corned beef and cabbage.  Drinks are already inexpensive so you won't have to lay out the big bucks.  36-15 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria.  718.278.2621

Mojave - St. Patty's day at a Mexican restaurant? The answer is a clear YES and as a matter of fact, their specials are pretty sweet, including $4 Guinness, $9 Irish car bombs, $5 baby Guiness, $5 appetizers and more.
22-36 31st Street Astoria. 718.545.4100

Sparrow
- This darkly-lit speakeasy has a simple, no messing around St. Patty's Day special - $9 Guinness + Jameson shot.  Enjoy getting nice and toasty. 24-01 29th Street, Astoria.  718.606.2260

Studio Square Beer Garden
- Prepare to sing your heart out at Studio Square's Wednesday night karaoke from 10 p.m. - 1 a.m. It's not necessarily St. Patty's Day related but there will be drinks specials all night. 35-33 36th Street, Astoria.  718.383.1001

Sunswick
-While drinks specials will be announced tomorrow, there will be a special menu available featuring Irish food such as corned beef and cabbage.  And if you're not in the mood for that, Sunswick serves a mean turkey burger.  35-02 35th Street Astoria. 718.752.0620

Sweet Afton
- An Irish bar by nature, St. Patty's Day festivities are certainly happening.  Classic drinks such as Guinness will be flowing, Irish music will be pumping and their delicious Irish breakfast rolls will be served all day long.  Prices will remain as usual. 30-09 34th Street, Astoria.  718.777.2570

The Quays Pub
- This neighborhood favorite will feature their already dirt cheap drinks such as $2 Coors Light drafts, PBRs and High Life. Cheers to that! 45-02 30th Avenue, Astoria.  718.204.8435

YOLO - A big party is in store for tomorrow with $5 whiskey shots, $6 pints of stout, festive Irish music and all your favorite Irish nibbles.  The celebration starts at 11 a.m. and goes on all night.
22-55 31st street, Astoria. 718.777.1177

Superbowl XLIV - Where to Watch the Big Game

With the Superbowl this weekend, I'm sure that everyone's plates are looking full.  If you're still wondering what to do on this American "holiday," here are my top 10 suggestions.   Whatever you end up doing, I hope you eat and drink your hineys off.

10.  Dillinger's Pub & Grill - While they're not having specific drink specials, the game will most certainly be on, the food will be plentiful, and you'll have opportunities to win some fun give-aways.  46-19 30th Avenue, Astoria.  718.956.5601

9.  Irish Rover - The game will be star of this show, and as always, their cheap drinks bring in the fun crowd.  Draft beers $4-$5, bottled beers $4-$4.50, liquor $4.50 except for premium.  Enjoy and drink up!  37-18 28th Avenue, Astoria.  718.278.9372

8.  YOLO - If you haven't seen Yolo's modern space, now is a good opportunity.  Their big screen totally rocks and will make great football watching.  Specials will include pitchers and pizza pie combos.  The party starts at 5 p.m.  22-55 31st Street, Astoria. 718. 777.1177

7.  Gleason's - While their Superbowl plans are still in progess, they will have a gametime menu with wings and pitchers.  The wings are a must, as they're meaty and delicious - I recommend the honey mustard, which are slightly sweet and tangy.  33-08 Broadway, Astoria.  718.626.5393

6.  The Quays Pub - This low-key Irish pub is partying it up with plenty of food and booze - as in DIRT CHEAP brew.  $2 pints of Coors, High Life, PBR and more - this special speaks for itself. 45-02 30th Avenue, Astoria.  718.204.8435

5.  Testaccio - An Italian newbie, they'll feature a special Superbowl menu as well as additional flat screen TVs in the main dining room to watch the game.  I recommend their stone oven pizza and the cheesy rice croquettes.  47-30 Vernon Blvd, LIC.  718.937.2900

4.  LIC Bar - Happy hour deals will be extended on this special night with $3 Miller Light drafts, well drinks and shots.  A 6-for-$20 domestic beer special will also be in effect - that's just over $3 a pop, which is hard to pass up.  45-58 Vernon Blvd, LIC.  718.786.5400

3.  Astoria Brewhouse - In their customary fashion, Astoria Brewhouse (previously Indigo) will host a Superbowl party with $13 domestic pitchers, 20-for-$10 wings and even chances to win a 32" flat screen TV.  The space is nice and boasts plenty of TVs to watch the big game.  28-50 31st Street, Astoria.  718.728.0050

2.  Studio Square Beer Garden - Now this is a proper party that will no doubt quench your thirst and satisfy your hunger.  For $25 per person, you'll get 5 hours of open bar (beer & wine only) as well as Studio Square's classic buffet.  The party starts at 6 p.m. 35-33 36th Street, Astoria.  718.383.1001

1.  Vesta - Vesta's Superbowl party promises a great time.  In addition to a special Superbowl menu with sandwiches, meatballs and pizza, you can win plenty of fun prizes including a dinner with me!  21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria.  718.545.5550

Indigo is now the Astoria Brewhouse

I couldn't believe it--Indigo bar changed its name to the Astoria Brewhouse.  The name change seemed to come out of nowhere and I decided to inquire if anything else about it had changed.  Interestingly, nothing else is different. They will have new menus with 90% of the items remaining pretty much the same, they're just cleaning it up a bit and getting rid of a few unpopular items.  The decor remains the same and business is as usual - no new management either.

Just wanted to clarify its status in case you were wondering what was up.  Nada!
