Walima - A Casbah of Yum

Walima - 31-06 42nd Street, Astoria, NY 11105

R/V Train to Steinway or 46th Street

Walima is located near Cavo Café & Lounge, which could be both a pro and a con—con because everyone tends to flock straight to Cavo. But if you do in fact take the chance to visit Walima, you won’t be disappointed with the cuisine. Their meat dishes are incredibly juicy, the rice has wonderful texture and the spreads could not be creamier. I especially recommend trying their slow-cooked Tajines. The meat is so tender that it's falling off the bone; it's also smothered in a special house sauce that brings it to life. I thought the beef Tajine was exceptional--it was just the right amount of sweet and savory. Other good options to try are entrees from the grill—especially the Chicken Shawerma. This dish comes with grilled chicken on a blanket of yellow rice and Walima’s house salad. The service here, sadly has a long way to go. It can take up to 15 minutes for the waitress to take your order and certain dishes have a tendency of being "forgotten." But despite a couple of setbacks, the food is really great, the prices reasonable and on the whole, Walima is worth the visit.
