Bistro 33 - A Combo of Sushi & Francais Delicatesse

Bistro 33 - 19-33 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105

N/W Train to Ditmars Blvd (last stop)

Prior to visiting Bistro 33, I had an image in my head—cushy chairs, outdoor seating, trendy lounge music, rustic food and a hip atmosphere. What I experienced though was quite different--an isolated location and very bland decor. Despite a disappointing first impression, the food was on a mission to change my mind. I started with the goat cheese crab cakes. The goat cheese wasn’t too overpowering but was definitely felt in this deliciously crispy cake with a side of warm grilled corn and tomato salad. My main course, roasted rack of lamb was soft and juicy, with just the right amount of rosemary, red wine sauce and a heaping mountain of delicate potato, garlic gratin on the side. Being a sucker for sweet things, I mistakenly got dessert--a bread pudding, which arrived late and badly burned. The service at Bistro was wonderful at the beginning but unfortunately went haywire at dessert. The prices are fair for some courses, like the appetizers and sushi but a little too ambitious for the entrees. I’d come back to try the sushi and another French entrĂ©e but would definitely skip dessert.

  1. Better to go for a desert to a different place or give them another chance?
