Lucas Steakhouse Delivers on Taste and Class
I can't even tell you how many times I've prepared myself to visit Lucas Steakhouse, but to no avail. There was always something preventing me from trying it, whether the high costs or a lack of a special occasion, until this past weekend when Dan and I finally went there for his annual birthday dinner. While our expectations were on the low side, I can't properly express how surpassed they ended up being - from the impeccable service to the flawless food.
Atmosphere:
Surprised by how small the space actually was, I can safely say that I've never dined at a steakhouse this intimate. For the occasion we were celebrating, it was absolutely perfect and appropriate, but just note if you'd like to come with a bigger group, I'd place my reservation way ahead of time.
Something I found particularly wonderful is the decor - it's sleek and modern and a little funky too, which some of the most popular steakhouses in the city sometimes lack. The leather chairs with a high back and gorgeous details such as metal grommets made me feel the most comfortable I ever recall being at a fancy steakhouse. And to further create a sexy vibe, the dim lighting and soft music did just that, presenting a perfect atmosphere for couples. Collectively, I found the ambiance a little bit of a disconnect with respect to its location on the residential 35th Avenue and 32nd Street, but nonetheless welcome.
Food:
With classic steakhouse items gracing the menu, Dan and I had no trouble choosing our dinner. We were also happy to learn about the high quality of meats - all 100% USDA prime cuts, and even grass fed options. Meat heaven was upon us...
Appetizer - It was easy to choose our app, as we both had our eye on the crab cake. I was excited to see how innovative its composition was - a giant lump crab cake, resting on a bed of spicy corn salsa and a chipotle aioli that woke our senses. The crab itself was flavorful and meaty, and tasted as fresh and crisp as the sea.
Steak - Hands-down the best part of the meal (as it should be), we ordered two cuts of meat, Dan going for the 28-day dry aged T-bone and I for the grass-fed boneless sirloin strip. Both looked absolutely gorgeous, dressed simply with delicate grains of sea salt and fresh crushed herbs.
Dan loved his steak, getting two cuts in one piece of meat including the leaner fillet as well as a more marbled New York strip. I had the pleasure of tasting both pieces and had a strong preference for the New York strip - it had a lot more flavor.
My steak however, stole the show (in my opinion), as it was the juiciest cut of meat I've had to date, boasting a lot of explosive flavor in one bite. I adored the simple flavorings that were the same as on Dan's piece and thoroughly enjoyed dipping the steak into the side of two housemade BBQ sauces, the coffee BBQ and the classic with coriander flavoring.
Sides - Choosing to pair our steak with two sides, including the Brussel sprouts and the onion rings, the former was our favorite. It was lovely to see a pretty golden coloring on its exterior, which offered up a delicious charred taste. Paired with bits of smoky bacon and roasted garlic, the overall effect was expertly balanced and super sophisticated.
The onion rings too, were very good, coated in a smooth tempura batter. They kept their crisp nicely and were also great to dip into the coffee BBQ sauce. I enjoyed them but could eat only about 2 of them, since they were kind of heavy.
Dessert - Another show-stopper, we actually ordered the dessert before we put our steak order in. Our waiter explained that the apple pot pie was made to order and took about 25 minutes to cook. Not long after he explained the contents of this dessert (chunky apples, caramel, organic vanilla bean ice-cream), we without hesitation said "yes."
Once this beauty arrived, it reaffirmed our decision. It looked magnificent, with a honey golden crust, lovingly hugging the deep porcelain dish. The dough was flaky and buttery, pairing well with the hot, caramel filling. I just loved how large and chunky the apples were on the inside, making each bite substantially more and more delicious.
Service and Cost:
We both liked our server who was really comfortable with the menu and his love for steakhouse cuisine was very evident. He was able to definitively tell us his favorites (i.e. crabcake, cut of steak), which we took seriously.
Costs are in-line with other high-end steakhouses to maybe even slightly cheaper. I had an Opentable Spotlight coupon with me, which gave us $50 off the check (I paid $25 for it), but all in all, the dinner set us back about $75/person, tax and tip included.

A Deal at Lucas Steakhouse? No..really!
Here's a little incentive for you - the newly re-opened Lucas Steakhouse, which is a little unattainable in my eyes in terms of price point is offering a deal. Now while I wouldn't normally highlight random daily deals because g_d knows we get enough of them, this one really looks promising.
If you're interested in trying this high-end steakhouse that for me looks quite enticing, check out this OpenTable Spotlight deal which is offering a $25 for $50 deal for Lucas. You can buy more than one deal but can only use one per table. I snatched mine today and will report back about my experience. But if you beat me to it, do let me know what you think. I can't wait to sink my teeth into some juicy steak (well...let's hope).

Lucas Steakhouse is Coming Back
While I'm not yet sure what's changed this time around, I'll make sure to investigate and get back to you. I hope the prices have dropped a bit so we can all get around to actually trying it, instead of suffering from sticker shock.
Reopening day is scheduled for this Friday, as you can see. Please let me know if you happen to try it, and about the changes you experience.

Lucas Steakhouse is Closed
Just shy of two years old, Lucas Steakhouse has closed. I heard the news last week from my colleague Mackenzi from We Heart Astoria as well as from a loyal Foodista reader, Aaron. Walking by last weekend, Aaron noticed a sign on the door that said Lucas has closed its doors for good. Although I feel bad for the misfortune of a local business, I can't say I'm surprised, given how expensive Lucas was, considering the neighborhood. I would much rather visit Christos Steakhouse on the rare occasion that I would eat at a fancy steakhouse. And apparently, I wasn't alone.
So long Lucas. I hope that something else wonderful pops up in your place.

Queens Restaurant Week Releases Its Restaurant List
I recently mentioned that Queens Restaurant Week is almost upon us again, starting on September 20th and going through September 30th (weekends not included). Partaking in the food fun that goes along with it in year's past, I can comfortably say that Queens Restaurant Week offers excellent value at $25 per person, usually for 3 courses. In some cases you can even get a 2-for-$25 deal (but that depends on the restaurant).
Recently spotting the full participating restaurant list on QEDC's website, I wanted to share it with you to whet your appetite. There are over 100 restaurants on the current list, with detailed deal opportunities coming soon. Here are some of the ones in particular that caught my eye.

Happy Father's Day Astoria
Picture of my dad - we call him "Oci" (Slovak word for dad).
Father's Day is just around the corner, this Sunday, June 20th. If you're still wondering what to do for it, here are 10 helpful suggestions that should certainly whet Dad's appetite. While most restaurants aren't having any specials or prix-fixes, I think that's a good thing.
5 Napkin Burger - What better place to take Dad than for a hearty, juicy burger at this newly opened joint. I highly recommend their signature "5 Napkin" burger with caramelized onions and melted Gruyere cheese. They open at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. 35-01 36th Street, Astoria. 718.433.2727
Ornella - If Dad is a pasta man, you have to take him to this intimate Italian eatery, boasting traditional and innovative pasta. My favorite is the imbustata, which is a pasta "envelope" stuffed with roasted veal, chicken and wild mushrooms. The homemade ricotta cheesecake is an absolute must. 29-17 23rd Avenue, Astoria. 718.777.9477
Zenon Taverna - Zenon provides the ultimate family atmosphere with homemade Cypriot dishes such as pasticchio, keftedes (meatballs), loukaniko (sausage), grilled halloumi cheese and so much more. For $18.95 - $22.95 per person, you can get a whole 12-16 course mezedes tasting. No...I'm not kidding! 34-10 31st Avenue, Astoria. 718.956.0133
Christos Steakhouse - Want to treat Dad to a nice steak dinner with an unpretentious vibe? Christos has that and much more. The steak speaks for itself and the appetizers and sides have a Greek twist, such as the Greek spreads, saganaki cheese, loukaniko (Greek sausage) and more. 41-08 23rd Avenue, Astoria. 718.777.8400
BareBurger - Another delicious burger place, this one is all organic and serves amazing organic beer at affordable prices. Try the Big Blue Bacon Mushroom Onion Burger and the crispiest onion rings in all of Astoria. 33-21 31st Avenue, Astoria. 718.777.7011
Taverna Kyclades - If you're a family that loves Greek food, you can't miss this place. Even though they don't take reservations, I'd suggest getting there at an off-peak time (around 4 or 4:30 p.m.) to get a prime table. Enjoy any of the grilled seafood such as the calamari or shrimp, and don't forget to get a slew of apps too. 33-07 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria. 718.545.8666
Akti - Akti is never a miss and it's a close second for me (right after Kyclades) for Greek food. Dads will love the plethora of grilled Greek meat and seafood as well as a selection of fresh salads and really amazing Greek cheese. Prices are affordable. 34-19 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.721.3530
Lucas Steakhouse - While a definite splurge, modern Dads will love this chic steakhouse with stylish furnishings and all your favorite steakhouse classics. They boast a 28 days dry-aged steak, which comes served with their house steak sauce. 34-55 32nd Street, Astoria. 718.786.5200
Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden - Beer-enthusiast Dads will love the laid-back atmosphere of this outdoor space. It's probably going to be a lot more crowded than usual because of the World Cup, but if you get there early enough, you'll get a good spot. Besides the beer, enjoy authentic Slovak and Czech cuisine. 29-19 24th Avenue, Astoria. 718.274.4925
Trattoria L'Incontro - I couldn't believe it, but for once on a special occasion, L'Incontro is not having a prix-fixe. Dads will love their extensive daily specials including homemade pasta, a variety of antipasti, brick oven pizza, fresh seafood and more. 21-76 31st Street, Astoria. 718.721.3532
Fatty's - If you're looking to have a very low key Father's Day, Fatty's is a nice choice. You can munch on a casual meal with Dad in their outdoor garden over beers, burgers, burritos and empanadas. 25-01 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria. 718.267.7071
Vesta - Take Dad to this delicious, intimate eatery serving the freshest ingredients sourced from a nearby rooftop farm. I recommend any of their salads - they're absolutely wonderful and so vibrant. The pizza and the fresh pasta is excellent too. 21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria. 718.545.5550

Happy Father's Day Astoria!
This Sunday is Father's Day and I'm surprised that only one restaurant on my round-up list is doing anything special. Father's need some love too! In any case, check out these good eats that you can hit up with Dad.
Vesta - Impress Dad with rustic, Italian dishes from Vesta. Personal favorites include the sheep's milk ricotta crostini, interesting pizzas such as the potato, pancetta, caramelized onions, apple and goat cheese pie, as well as hearty pasta dishes. For traditional eaters, steak with red onion and blue cheese butter is available. 21-02 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11102. 718.545.5550
Ovelia - The only eatery with a Dad special, it includes robust entrees such as surf and turf with Greek coffee skirt steak, a stuffed lobster tail, and a Kobe burger and beer combo. Both options are reasonably priced, especially the burger. 34-01 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11103. 718.721.7217
Christos Steakhouse - A perfect place to take meat-lover Dads, Christos' high-quality food and impeccable service offer a memorable experience. I'm a big fan of their steak au poivre and the seafood is top-notch. You can probably imagine that an exceptional experience comes with a higher cost--but as far as steakhouses go, this one is affordable. 41-08 23rd Avenue, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.777.8400
Trattoria L'Incontro - Shocked to find out that they aren't featuring a prix-fixe this year, it's probably for the best. Known for their fresh pasta and delicious antipasti, it's hard to go wrong with anything here. The specials are Trattoria's main attraction, and I'm sure they'll be even heftier on Sunday than usual. 21-76 31st Street, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.721.3532
Lucas Steakhouse - The newest steakhouse in Astoria, it promises a chic, modern atmosphere. The prices reflect its avant-garde-ness, but judging by the fact that they share owners with Locale , I trust that it's good. The menu is traditional, featuring New York strip steak, clams casino, New York cheesecake and more. 34-55 32nd Street, Astoria NY 11106. 718.786.5200
Malagueta - Another good option for steak lovers, my husband enjoyed a classic broiled steak with sauteed spinach here. The Moqueca de Camarao (shrimp stew, palm oil, onions, peppers, coconut milk and cilantro) is their signature dish and quite delicious. Price-wise it's affordable, especially considering the nice atmosphere. 25-35 36th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11106718.937.4821
Taverna Kyklades - Taverna doesn't feature any specials nor take reservations, but you can always count on it for exceptional Greek dishes such as spinach pie, grilled octopus, all sorts of grilled and fried seafood, chicken kebobs, Greek-style hamburgers and much more. It's hard to get in so if you decide on this place, get there early. 33-07 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria NY 11105. 718.545.8666
Koliba - My favorite Slovak/Czech restaurant in town, they serve the most delicious bacon that I've ever tasted on top of hearty potato and cheese spaetzle. There's also a plethora of beef, pork and chicken dishes with dumplings to choose from. Everything is flavorful and super filling--and a nice, tall glass of beer makes this cuisine complete. 31-11 23rd Avenue, Astoria, NY 11105. 718.626.0430
Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden - Take Dad to the original Beer Garden, which despite a worthy adversary (Studio Square), is still my favorite. You can enjoy a variety of international beers, grilled food such as kielbasa, burgers, chicken as well as homemade Czech and Slovak specialties such as goulash, dumplings, fried cheese and more. 29-19 24th Avenue, Astoria NY 11102. 718.274.4925
Studio Square Beer Garden - The new beer garden in town will have appeal for modern dads. They have over 18 beers on tap and serve grilled meats such as sausages, burgers, chicken and even pulled pork. The fries are particularly delicious and super crispy. 35-33 36th Street, Astoria NY 11106718.383.1001

Lucas Steakhouse Coming Soon
A little while ago, I noticed Lucas Steakhouse, a new restaurant on 35th Avenue and 32nd street that's said to open soon. I've been watching it for a couple of months now and haven't seen much progress. The owners of this steakhouse also run Locale just around the corner on 34th Avenue. I called them to inquire about Lucas' opening and they mentioned about 3-4 weeks--we'll see.A new, modern steakhouse will be a welcome addition the neighborhood, as there currently aren't many with the exception of Christos but that's more on the traditional side. Judging from the cool, sophisticated feel of Locale, I think that Lucas will also embody some of these qualities. The Locale website has minimal information about it and calls Lucas an "intimate steakhouse with all the luxuries you would expect from a fine Manhattan steakhouse. Serving USDA prime beef, dry aged to perfection."
That certainly sounds good. I'll report back when I have more information and a menu.
