Island - ... of Disappointment

Island - 35-15 36th St. Astoria, NY 11102
718.433.0690
N/W Train to 36th Avenue or R Train to Steinway

I was looking forward to eating here a whole week prior to my birthday dinner. I read reviews, looked at pictures; check, check—all looked great. It even seemed great when we walked into an unbelievably charismatic atmosphere of white canopies, cushy seats and romantic candles. It was not long after we sat down and got our first dish that I realized that I was dead wrong about this place. The food was many things except for right—flavorless, over-seasoned, overcooked, soggy, greasy, gamey, the list goes on. I’d only return to Island for drinks, steering way clear of their disappointing food. Some of my tips if dining here:

1. Order the simpler sounding dishes because the more sophisticated you go, the more disappointed you'll be.
2. Try a couple of small dishes instead of ordering the ultra-expensive entrees.
3. Don’t ask your waiter for a recommendation. When dining here, my boyfriend asked whether he should order steak or lamb. The waiter said something to the effect of “the steak is always good wherever you go. I don’t know much about lamb.”
