Avenue Cafe - A Buzzing Place to be Seen

Avenue - 35-27 30th Ave, Astoria, NY 11103

When in Astoria, do as Astorian do and go to a typical Greek cafe like Avenue. I've been here many times and like it for its social atmosphere. But what I really appreciate about Avenue is that you're not obligated to order a lot of food or drinks. You can simply order a cup of coffee and be done with it—and they don't judge you for it. Sometimes walking into Avenue can be quite the production, so much so that you feel you're on display. I’ve had people stare me down when walking in—not a great feeling but I get over it. In terms of the coffee drinks, the Frappes are out of this world! Strong, flavorful and really cold, they're especially refreshing on hot summer days. Their salads are a great light-bite option and I prefer the tabouli or the "Avenue salad" with apples, onions and honey mustard dressing. The crepes are also wonderful and happen to be my favorite in Astoria--they're paired amazingly with melted nutella, bananas, strawberries and the fluffiest dough you've ever sinked your teeth into. The music inside is sometimes too loud and for this reason I prefer to sit outside when chatting with a friend. Avenue is also a fun option during popular sporting events—it attracted quite the crowd during the World Cup.
