Petey's Burger is Coming to LIC

Exciting news everyone - Petey's Burger is expanding to LIC.  I noticed its new location today while on my way to Alobar with my friend Bob, and it's right there on that corner of Vernon Blvd and 46th Road, across the street from Manducatis Rustica.

This new location seems like a great opportunity and especially in this budding neighborhood full of great eats.  A casual burger joint seems like a nice addition, and I have high hopes for this Astoria-based micro-chain.  From the looks of it, it seems like an opening will be fast approaching after the new year, but I'll keep you all posted based on what I hear around the nabe.

Astoria and LIC Eateries Time Out For Hunger

Time Out for Hunger, Time Out NY's eighth annual event that commissions restaurants to donate part of their proceeds to The Food Bank for NYC is back again on March 20th.  I'm a big supporter of this event, and encourage you to take part by simply dining in your favorite participating restaurants.  Ten percent of proceeds that day will benefit hungry NYers in need, which helps our community at large.

In addition to a lot of NYC restaurants that are doing this, Astoria and LIC always come aboard.  This year's local participants include:

Porchetta's Chef Gives Astoria Restaurant Recos

New York’s annual cheap eats list made its way on to newsstands this week, much to the delight of budget-conscious foodies citywide. This year’s trends include fried chicken, meatballs, dan dan noodles, and tortillas.

Astor Bake Shop was the only Astoria spot to made the list for its combo burger shop and bakery set up. Luckily, Sara Jenkins (the chef-owner of Porchetta and consulting chef at Veloce Pizzeria) gave the magazine her money-saving food picks in the neighborhood.

My favorite Greek restaurant. The little zucchini fritters ($7) and tomato fritters ($7.50) are amazing.

2. Rosario’s Deli

Amazing cheese, sandwiches, pizza, and bread. He has only one kind of slice (Neapolitan), and it’s really good ($2).

3. Mediterranean Foods

This shop has all the great prepared foods like taramosalata, a classic Greek dip with salted cod roe ($3.85/lb).

4. Naseem Meat Market & Grocery

They make the best merguez ($3.99/lb). Also: really good Moroccan preserved lemons ($3.99/lb).

Their shish tawook sandwich ($3.50) is the closest thing to the grilled-chicken sandwich in Beirut.

Here's some very timely, last-minute news from Petey's Burger. I'm a little surprised that the news came to me two hours prior to this deal expiring but if you're in the nabe you can take advantage of it.

Earlier this week, one of my readers (Jake) mentioned that Petey's is now open. It sure is! I walked by today to check out their menu. I didn't have an appetite for a burger at that moment so I didn't go in but I will soon. Here's a peak at a portion of their menu. It looks pretty reasonable and from the look of it, I'd say that Petey's falls somewhere in between a traditional fast food joint and a nicer burger place.

Petey's Burger - Getting Closer?

If you live in the area, then you probably know that Petey’s has yet to open its doors. If you’re on Petey’s mailing list then you probably kind of sort of know why it has yet to open its doors.

In a recent e-mail from Petey he informs us that apparently there’s nothing holding back the opening, aside from the usual stuff. You know, getting ConEd to show up and having New York City inspect and approve the site. All those rumors about not having enough money seem to be false. Petey’s Burger is ready to go, just waiting patiently for its chance. According Petey, “the burgers are great, the fries are great,” and he can’t wait to have us as his guests. And with all this anticipation, I’m looking forward to taking him up on that.

Petey's Burger - Close to Opening

I walked by Petey's Burger last week because I'm eager to try a new burger joint in the 'hood. It looks like its almost there. The place was busy with some last minute touch-ups such as painting and decor. The tables aren't there just yet but it looks like an opening is not too far from reach. From what I can tell to this point, the decor is modern but not overdone. I liked that one of the walls had exposed brick but otherwise, it's a pretty bright color scheme--reds and yellows. I'll keep you posted about its official opening but no word yet. If anyone knows the scoop please let me know.

Petey's Burger - Coming to Town

I passed by Sai Organics yesterday and saw that a new burger joint called Petey's Burger will open next door. What a contrast--organic food v. burgers/Americana!

There aren't too many details to report yet except that their logo and design is funky, contemporary and seems to differentiate itself from the Burger Kings and the Mickey-D's. Their tagline is playful yet informative - "A Fresh Touch on an Old Favorite." You can currently sign up for their mailing list on www.peteysburger.com but that's about it for the website--it's not up and running yet.

I'll keep an eye out and let you know when Petey's opens--it's facade has definitely piqued my interest.
