JJ’s - Revisiting an Old Gem
After a very long hiatus, I returned back to JJ’s for a nice farewell dinner for friends, Harlan and Rachel, together with Meg and Tom. We’ve all been dying to go back and actually Meg and Tom hadn’t yet been so they were extra excited to try this Asian fusion eatery. Even though not everything we had was new, it was wonderful to re-order some of the old favorites we knew and loved.
Seaweed Salad – I’ve had this appetizer many a times in other Asian restaurants, but not yet at JJ’s. It was a perfect starter that was light, refreshing and provided nice toothsomeness with each bite. Sesame seeds were sprinkled throughout, which added yet another crunchy element.
Tuna Belly Special – A special appetizer of the day, we were intrigued to try it and loved it. Due to its rare preparation, you really tasted the quality of the fish that was dressed with a lovely, miso –based sauce and topped with Asian spices. This was definitely more for adventurous foodies, but Tom was a good sport by digging in and appreciating it for the delicacy it was.
Yellowtail Special – Another interesting starter dish, this one was also on the semi-raw side and dressed with a similar sauce as the tuna belly. The most interesting element of the dish were the accoutrements including thin, crunchy apple slices, and sprouts. Everyone at the table remarked at how spectacular and different it was, further proving that specials are definitely worth trying here.
Pork Gyoza – I’ve had this here before but was excited to get it again because quite frankly, who doesn’t love a yummy pork dumpling?! The consensus about this dish was that it was aaawesome. A little crunchy and well done on the outside, the inside was soft and moist, packed with deliciously flavorful pork. We dipped each piece in soy sauce and savored each bite.
Edamame Potstickers – This is the dish that JJ’s is known for and we couldn’t not get it. Soft, gooey dumplings dressed with creamy edamame sauce, their inside also boasted this lovely filling. I happened to enjoy them, but some of my dining companions thought they weren’t up to snuff. The only criticism I’d have is that the dumpling dough could’ve been a little firmer.
Sushi Assortment – This was the piece-de-resistance of our meal, as we got an assortment of four different types of sushi and a couple of sashimi pieces too. Out of the rich variety, my favorites were the sweet potato tempura roll and the spicy yellowtail roll. I loved the former because of its sweet decadence, and the fried aspect also ramped up the indulgence factor. In terms of the yellowtail, once again the fish was of great quality and so fresh. I also loved the extra texture from the fish eggs on the outside of the roll – just fantastic!
Green Tea Crepe – As if we didn’t have enough food, we decided to go all way and get dessert. Well actually I just had a bite of Meg and Tom’s green tea crepe, but still, I couldn’t believe I even had room for that. This was one of the more interesting dishes, as I’ve never seen a crepe look like a cake. Made up of many, many layers of extra thin, green tea crepes, it was stacked and then cut into a triangular cake-like piece. I took a bite and really enjoyed its gentle, delicate flavor, further enhancing that with good quality vanilla ice cream that came on the side.
Service and Cost:
Our server was wonderful and very very quick. He made some nice recommendations when we needed them and did a good job of keeping us satisfied. I liked that he poured our sake each time and explained a little bit about the variety we were drinking. He was fast with the check too, yet didn’t make us feel rushed at all, despite the restaurant being pretty crowded on a Friday night.
Costs continue to be very moderate here, and for the elaborate meal I just described, we paid an (drumroll…) astonishing $25 including tax and tip.

JJ's Asian Fusion - Fresh, Affordable Goodness

718.626.8888
N/W Train to Broadway
My friend Crystal and I decided to hit-up JJ's Asian Fusion last night for dinner. Although it's a bit far from the subway, the walk is worth it--even in the biting cold. We loved our dishes and dinner was perfectly affordable, considering the large amount of food we got. JJ's offers wonderful value and equally wonderful food.
Atmosphere:
JJ's is such a lovely, serene place. The calm feeling that came over me as soon as I stepped inside was unmistakable--and this was no accident, as it happened the first time I went there too. The decor is natural and you'll notice a lot of rich, wood accents on the walls. The dining room is separated into three small sections by simple bamboo and wood partitions, which make the space feel even more private. The only downside to JJ's is that it's a little dark but on the upside, that can be quite nice if you're on a date. I'd definitely suggest it for 2nd or 3rd date situation.
Food:
Once again, I was impressed by JJ's food--and their reasonable prices. The menu boasted a nice variety of sushi, dumplings, soups and hot entrees. Both Crystal and I were in the mood for sushi but we also wanted to try a hot appetizer to warm ourselves up. Here's what we had:
Hot and Sour Soup - As soon as I saw that this soup had a spinach wonton in it, I just had to try it. It was wonderful and very flavorful--full of generously cut veggies such as mushrooms, onions, tomatoes and cilantro. The mushrooms were my favorite ingredient and when I finally found the spinach wonton, it was perfection in my spoon. The spinach filling was very light and used in moderation. I was happy to discover that there was not one but two of these wontons in the soup--it was a nice surprise.
Edamame Potstickers - This was Crystal's appetizer--and JJ's signature dish. While I didn't try it this time, I've had it before and liked it. Crystal seemed satisfied with them too and she finished her portion to the last bite. I think that they were a bit filling though because Crystal ended up taking a large portion of her sushi home.
The Sushi - We both ordered sushi rolls, which were fresh and nicely proportioned. I chose the spicy tuna crunchy roll and an avocado roll while Crystal went for the sweet potato tempura roll. The tuna roll was wonderful and crunchy in all the right places--it didn't feel greasy and there was no fishy aftertaste. But I thought that Crystal's choice was even better! The sweet potato had good consistency--it stayed together well--and its corners were slightly fried. Again, this didn't feel heavy or oily--it was just right. What a great option for vegetarians!
Service and Cost:
Absolutely no complaints about the service--they were quick, attentive and polite. They seemed to know their stuff and ran a tight ship. It looks like JJ's has very good management because the place keeps getting better and better.
For the meal that I just described including 2 very full glasses of Pinot Grigio, our total was $39! When we added the tip, it came out to about $24 per person. I think it's a great deal that's worth trying.

Queens Restaurant Week Coming Soon

Like Manhattan, Queens is also holding its Restaurant Week soon--September 15-18, September 22-25. Usually it's been great because the prices are lower than in Manhattan, actually making Restaurant Week a good value. Not this year! I was surprised and annoyed to find out that the prices are on par with Manhattan Restaurant Week--$25 prix-fixe for lunch and $35 prix-fixe for dinner. I don't see the point, as most restaurants in Queens are a lot more cost effective than their Manhattan counterparts. So why put a big price tag on them and market them as a good deal? I simply don't get it.
Here's a list of the Astorian and LIC Restaurant Week participants. Some of them are worth checking out, but most of them I'd visit on a regular night.

Pinocchio Palace - 32-02 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11102. 718.932.4976
Riverview Restaurant (this one might be worth it) - 2-01 50th Avenue, Long Island City NY 11101. 718.392.5000
Tournesol - 50-12 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City NY 11101. 718.472.4355
Water's Edge (not worth it) - 4-01 44th Drive, Long Island City NY 11101. 718.482.0033
Zenon Taverna - 34-10 31st Avenue, Astoria NY 11106. 718.956.0133
But there is one thing, which actually sounds like a deal:
The first 200 people that reveal their favorite restaurant in Queens will be invited to a kick-off party and media event, which includes a three course menu, representative of the Queens culinary scene. And these participants will also be entered to win various Queens restaurant gift certificates. Visit www.discoverqueens.info and then click "contact us" to name your favorite Queens restaurant.
Good luck!

Precious Water - Astorians Join the Tap Project!

Thousands of restaurants around the country are joining the Tap Project--a campaign that recognizes and appreciates clean and available tap water in our communities and at the same time helps UNICEF distribute clean water to children around the globe.
How the Tap Project Works:
All participating restaurants encourage their patrons to donate a $1 for their drinking water during their visit. Yes, that water is normally free but by giving a $1, you'll help provide clean water to those who need it most.
I was excited to see that Astoria's restaurants stepped up to support the cause. Visit these eateries between Sunday, March 16th and Saturday, March 22nd, give $1 for your water and help needy communities around the world.
