Astoria's Finest Bagels Are Here. Or Are They?

Back in the summertime, I impatiently waited for Astoria's Finest Bagels, a new bagel shop on Ditmars Blvd to open.  Well it sure took them a while but they're finally up and running.  I walked by the other day, went in, grabbed a menu and called it a day.  Not to say that I won't go back and try something, I just wasn't in the mood for a bagel right then and there.  Although the reviews have been a bit off-putting, I'm willing to set 'em aside and experience it for myself.  I suggest you do the same.

Here's a brief sampling of their menu to give you a taste of what you can expect:

Hand-rolled bagels - plain, poppy, cinnamon raisin, sesame, onion, garlic, salt, whole wheat, pumpernickel, pumpernickel-raisin, everything, 9-grain honey, olive, low carb whole wheat oat - $12 for a dozen or $10 for a mini dozen

Cream cheeses - raisin walnut, sun-dried tomato, lox spread, scallion, olive, veggie, low-fat, seasonal fruit, herb...$1.10 - $3.75

Tofu spreads - lox, herb, veggie, olive, walnut raisin, scallion, sun-dried tomato...$2.75 - $3.75

Smoked fish sandwiches - Nova Scotia with cream cheese, baked salmon, white fish, belly lox & cream cheese, smoked tuna, pickled lox...$3.25 - $9.25

Salad sandwiches - white fish, tuna fish, chicken, eggplant, seafood, shrimp, egg, hummus, Mediterranean tuna salad...$2.50 - $6.25

Knishes - mushroom, spinach, potato...$2.75

Astoria's Finest Bagels Opening Soon

I was delighted when I walked by Ditmars the other day and saw that a new bagel shop called Astoria's Finest Bagels is in the works.  Keeping my eye on this place for quite some time, it looked ready about a month ago and since then not much progress has been made. Bummer.  My guess is that they're waiting on a permit?

Anyway, the place looks promising and is centrally located, on Ditmars in between 32nd and 33rd street.  Could be a good place to stop on your way to work for a cup of coffee and a bagel, of course.  Even though my current favorite in the nabe is Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company (they have the best, fluffiest bagels in all of Queens, in my opinion), a new place could be great to mix it up a bit.
